The School Day

The school day requires pupils to register with their tutor for the start of the school day at 8.45am. We will expect pupils to arrive by 8.40am. This provides a crisp start to the day and enables tutors to intervene in absence or behaviour for learning matters to ensure pupils start the day ready to learn. The breaks between lessons provide ‘take up time’ for teachers to deal with any behaviour for learning matters from the preceding lesson, and also helps pupils remain focused throughout the day. The school will be open from 8.00am. Pupils arriving between 8.00-8.40am will enter through the pupil gate. Those arriving between 8.40 and 8.45am will enter through the pupil gate. Pupils arriving after 8.45am will be registered as late.

EthosThere is an emphasis on building a strong academic ethos based on ‘Abbey Park Proud’.All pupils will be expected to work hard and behave respectfully in order to fulfil their potential. Pupils will be expected to take pride in both the content and presentation of their work and the positive attributes we want to develop in our learners will be made clear from the outset. Pupils’ academic performance will be supported by the pastoral system which will deal with any issues that might otherwise be a barrier to effective learning.

PSHCEPersonal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education

The PSHCE programme will be delivered by tutors. PSHE sessions will roll across the timetable so change each week. The 5 sessions per term are identified in the diary and this means all pupils will experience PSHE at the same time. Resources for the lessons will be provided by the PSHE co-ordinator. It is the expectation that tutors deliver these lessons to a high standard.

AssembliesThere is an assembly rota to follow and assemblies will usually take place during morning registration. This will also incorporate house assemblies as well. They will be delivered by a range of staff, mainly Heads of Key Stage, Heads of Houses and members of the Senior Leadership Team and tutors will be required to be present. Sometimes external presenters may be booked so assemblies may take place during PSHE sessions.

Attendance

Good attendance enables your child to engage in learning and fulfil their potential. Our expectation is that pupils attend school everyday.

If your child is ill, please notify the school as soon as possible. Genuine absence will be identified as authorised.

Unauthorised absence affects your child’s attendance record and may lead to a fine from the Local Authority.

Leave of Absence such as holidays or participation in sport or performances must be requested. Holidays are not allowed to be taken during term time and therefore will be identified as unauthorised.

Behaviour for Learning – Expectations and PolicyA high expectation of behaviour will be made clear to all stakeholders from the outset. This is outlined in the behaviour for learning policy.

All staff are responsible for behaviour across the school. To achieve consistency in approach to positive behaviour and challenge unacceptable behaviour, the Behaviour for Learning Policy will be read and followed by all staff. The Behaviour for Learning Policy is one of a number of policies available to parents on the school website. Staff and pupils will follow the rewards and consequences system as displayed in class and around the school.

Teaching and Learning

Pupil engagement with school reflects the quality of teaching and learning they experience. To support the development and improvement of teaching and learning at Abbey Park School, all staff have been trained in a professional development programme delivered by the SSAT, entitled the ‘Teacher Effectiveness Enhancement Programme’ (TEEP). As TEEP is also a significant part of staff development at Lydiard Park Academy, this will also allow significant collaboration between both sets of staff, allowing best practice to be effectively shared.

Assessment

The assessment system for KS3 incorporates a banding system to fit with the structure of the new GCSE courses and the 9-1 grading system. Pupils will complete ‘Milestone Assessments’ each term - the number of these in each subject will vary in proportion to the amount of curriculum time each subject gets.

Parent Evenings and Consultation daysA Tutor Consultation will take place in the first week of October. This is an opportunity for parents to meet with their child’s tutor to discuss how they have settled into life at Abbey Park School.

There will be 2 Consultation days during the year, in November and March. We expect parents to make an appointment with their child’s tutor, who will go through their progress record in each subject.

There will also be a Subject Consultation evening where parents will have the opportunity to meet their child’s subject teachers.

Home School Communication

• Your child’s tutor will be your first point of contact for pastoral or attendance concerns. If a problem persists or is more serious, it may then be passed upwards to the Student Support Assistant and then Head of Key Stage for your child’s year group.

• For queries or concerns regarding a particular subject or lesson parents should contact the classroom teacher in the first instance. If, following this, you still have concerns please contact the Curriculum Leader for that subject. We aim to respond to your concerns as soon as possible, but this may not always be the same day at very busy times. You may contact the school by phone, e-mail or letter.

• If you would like to discuss something face to face please contact reception to arrange a meeting. Please do not turn up to the school as it is highly unlikely that the person you most need to see is available at that time. Ringing ahead to make an appointment can avoid a wasted trip and the need for a return visit.
