Why should your school provide careers guidance? It complements the education, support and care you give to your students

We know that schools do not purely focus on the passing of exams and the achievement of qualifications. Your staff put a lot of time and effort into helping students develop into well-rounded adults able to cope in work and the wider world.

Adviza’s impartial guidance supports young people, not just to make the next choice, but to develop skills that allow them to continue making informed decisions throughout their ever-changing working lives.

Careers guidance leads to positive and sustainable destinations for your school

Research shows that young people who are uncertain or unrealistic about career ambitions are three times more likely to spend significant periods of time not in education, employment or training (NEET). (‘Careers guidance and inspiration in schools’, March 2015, Department for Education)

Careers guidance makes best use of the education your school gives to its students

Figures released by the Local Government Association show that 178,100 16-18 year olds failed to complete all or some of the post-16 qualifications they started in 2012/13, increasing their risk of becoming NEET. They estimate that the cost to the exchequer was approximately £814 million. (‘Achievement and retention in post 16 education’, February 2015, Local Government Association)

Careers guidance provides targeted support for students who may not meet their potential

The Sutton Trust manifesto sets out 10 policies that would underpin greater social mobility in Britain. One is to ‘provide every young person with an entitlement to good quality personalised education and careers guidance.’ (Mobility Manifesto, 2014, Sutton Trust)

It is your statutory duty The latest statutory guidance from the Department for Education, published in March 2015, sums up the requirements for all mainstream schools including SEN schools, pupil referral units, academies and free schools.

Key points include:

High quality independent careers guidance is crucial. In-house support must be combined with

advice and guidance from external sources to meet legal requirements

The duty on schools to secure independent careers guidance is extended to all year 8 to 13 pupils

Face-to-face advice and guidance should be provided to build confidence and motivation

It is included in Ofsted reportsOfsted has given careers guidance a higher priority since September 2013 and now judges a school’s leadership and management on how well they deliver advice and guidance.

This is emerging in Ofsted reports: In one county, between September and December 2014, 10 out of 11 schools received comments relating to their careers guidance provision.

The overall grading of some schools has been affected by inadequate careers provision for their students.

Examples have been cited of outstanding partnership work between careers providers and schools and how this was reflected in destination figures.
