1 Welcome to AP US History Milton High School {2020-2021 Syllabus} Welcome to AP United States History (APUSH). The purpose of this course is to provide a history of the American people through discussion of themes covering the colonial period to the present, emphasizing the development and adoption of the Constitution, the major events resulting in the democratization of American society, the sectional struggle over the nature of America’s identity, Reconstruction, economic growth in the post-Civil War years, and reform movements concerning social and economic institutions. The content shall also include the continuity of the American reform tradition, its culmination in the politics of the depression and post-World War II years, America’s rise to a position of world power, the domestic and international results of American participation in the two world wars and a continuing Cold War. The course will trace these themes throughout the year, emphasizing the ways in which they are interconnected and examining the ways in which each helps to shape change over time. Please be mindful that this course is rigorous and you will have homework almost every night. AP exam = Thursday, May 6, 2021 @ 8 AM. In this class you will discuss and evaluate… Materials Needed Daily… The following 8 themes help us connect across units of study: Þ American and National Identity (NAT) Þ Work, Exchange, and Technology (WXT) Þ Geography and the Environment (GEO) Þ Migration and Settlement (MIG) Þ Politics and Power (PCE) Þ America and the World (WOR) Þ American and Regional Culture (ARC) Þ Social Structures (SOC) {AP US History Themes, CED 2020} Þ Pens: Dark blue and/or black ink pen Þ Pencils (#2) & highlighters Þ Post-it notes (LOTS) Þ Washable Markers (1 pack. Of 8-10 markers) Þ Face Mask (to be worn daily) per CDC guidelines Make-Up Work: Students will be able to make up quizzes/tests on a specified day each week (provided Ms. Ford is not called to a meeting). Students who do not turn in assignments by this deadline will receive a -0- with a note in the FOCUS parent/student portal. NOTE: Students will have a limit of one week to complete any make-up assignments. You are not allowed to submit work after this deadline. Do I need computer access? YES!!! This classroom will be a Flipped Instruction classroom! In this teaching model, you will be required to complete readings and video instruction at home. During class, students will deepen their understanding of the course concepts with the guidance of the instructor. Students will NOT come to class and sit quietly while the instructor lectures. Additionally, you will need access to the AP Classroom digital platform on a daily basis. Video Concerns for Parents: Videos are used as a supplement to lessons to enhance the quality of education your student will receive. All “PG” or “PG-13” rated movies will have a permission slip sent home for you to sign. All documentaries are previewed and specific to the educational growth of your student. Period Packets:StudentwillreceiveaPeriodPacketforeachperiodofstudyassignedbyCollegeBoard(totalof9).Eachpacketwillhaveacalendarincluded(forthedatesthatwewillbestudyingthatperiod),vocabularyforthechaptersbeingcovered,graphicorganizers,andancillaryreadingsforannotation.Packetswillbeworth50totalpoints(equaltoanessayormultiple-choicetest)fortheseperiodsofstudy.

Why do I have to take an AP exam AND a Semester Exam? ATTENDANCEandGRADES!Studentswhomiss10ormoredaysinasemestergradingperiodarerequiredtotakeandpassthesemesterexam.SinceAPExamscoresareNOTavailableuntilJuly,youarerequiredtotakeasemesterexamthatwillcountas20%ofyouroverallgrade.
