Alberta’s Physical Education curriculum has been updated recently to reflect the changing lifestyles of Alberta students. There are two main changes to the program of studies: 1) an emphasis on exposing students to lifetime physical activities; 2) the promotion of active living on an individualized basis. These two components of the program take place in our classes on a regular schedule, in any physical activity the student undertakes on their own, in school athletics or intramurals, and at home in their involvement in sport and recreational pursuits outside school time.

Students can evaluate their involvement and participation with the ABCDs of Physical Education:

A – ACTIVE LIVING through a variety of physical activities. B – BENEFITS for HEALTH through positive fitness and nutrition C – COOPERATION and the development of positive social skills. D- DO IT DAILY FOR LIFE promoting lifelong participation

Physical activity continues to play a significant role in our lives, with the adolescent years being a critical time for the development of positive lifestyle choices. The aim of the K – 9 Physical Education program is to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. The OLG PE Department will endeavor to provide learning opportunities in the following dimensions: Games, Individual Activities, Alternative Environments, Fitness, and Dance.

Objectives: To assist the student’s individual development of motor skills that is effective, efficient, and ap-

plicable to a wide variety of activities. To assist the student in developing, monitoring, and maintaining an appropriate individual level

of fitness. To assist the student in developing personal attributes such as positive self-esteem, self-worth,

and a sense of personal responsibility. To assist the student in developing positive interpersonal skills transferable to other areas of

their lives. To promote life-long learning, and to provide positive physically active experiences that will mo-

tivate students to continue to be active all of their lives.

(1)I. Grading is based on Unit Skills, Unit BCD Outcomes, and quizzes/assignments. The focus of

self-evaluation in Health and PE is to have the students take ownership for their marks and to encourage them to make smart choices in leading an active lifestyle.

II. Attendance is crucial. However, if a student needs to miss a class (due to injury), a note signed by a parent will be accepted and a make-up assignment may be given. If the student has a more serious issue/injury that will prevent them from participating for an extended period of time, a doctor’s note will be required by the second absence . A collaborative alternative program will be implemented. If a student is not prepared for class but has the appropriate shoes, he/she will participate as long as it is safe to do, with the understanding that their safety mark will be affected. Regular attendance and participation is expected. Students absent or unable to participate will receive a zero for that class. If the absence is excused then the onus is on the student to make arrangements with his/her teacher for an appropriate make-up assignment.

General Rule: If you are too sick to participate in PE, you are too sick to be at school.

(2)III. Change Rooms. All students are expected to be changed, warmed up and ready to go 10

minutes after the bell. You will be tardy when you are not to your teacher’s assigned area when attendance is taken. The change room will be off limits during class. Exceptions will be made for emergencies, but generally you will not be allowed to use the change room during class so

For outdoor units such as flag football and lacrosse appropriate cool weather wear may be necessary (outdoor footwear, hoodie, jacket, sweat/wind pants- NO JEANS, toque/warm hat, gloves/mitts). Students are recommended to dress in layers. Failing to wear the appropriate outerwear may result in a non-participation mark. For safety reasons students cannot participate without the proper footwear. Alternative assignments may be given.
