Especially when that disappointment is perceived to be reality in your world. The mind wonders to places far from the reach of reality. The “what ifs,” the “should have been,” the empty promises that when first spoken flooded your mind with such joy and hope, but now overwhelms you with such derision and disapproval. It’s difficult to rise from the waves of unmet expectations. In Luke 24, Cleopas and the other traveler woke up that third day, overwhelmed by disappointment, looked at each other with one question – now what do we do? They had heard the news from the women at the tomb. They had heard the stories about the angels, and Peter’s confirmation that the body was indeed gone, and linen wrapping was all that was left in its place. But now what should they do? Their plan was to go back home, back to their everyday, pre-Jesus lives. They took to the road planning to go back and pick up where they had left off before they had met this man called Jesus. Back to fishing nets and abacus machines and tax deadlines. Back to the human condition. The waves of disappointment were so evident they almost missed a life changing moment. In the middle of the disappointment Jesus appears and at first unrecognized by the guests. The disappointment is so immense that they travel and eat with Him before they recognize Him. It says, “he took bread; he blessed it, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him.” For some reason in the action of the taking, breaking and the giving of the bread they realized in the midst of their disappointment, this is the risen Savior! As we will see today in the message, it’s a pattern that is evident throughout scriptures. A pattern best exemplified by God himself – He took his beloved Son, He broke Him so that we would not be broken and He gave Him in our place, so that we would not have to face God’s wrath. Clearly there is something deeper happening here than just a meal among disappointed followers and a stranger. In v.35 it says, “Jesus was known to them in the breaking of the bread.” Maybe when Jesus broke the bread, the disciples saw the way God has always worked and does always work in our lives - He took the bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it. Maybe it is not only the way Christ handled the bread but also how He handles our life. In the middle of the struggle of your life, are you missing what God is saying and doing? Journey with us today as we find clarity in the middle of our journey, gleaned from Luke 24: 13-35. FURNITURE AND HOUSEHOLD GOODS

NEEDED for

Robert & Tyra Winsor & Family After many years of ministry in Malaysia, Robert and

Tyra Winsor and family have decided to return to

Newfoundland to join the Cornerstone Ministry

Centre team. As a church, we have been supporting

their missions work in Asia for many years and now

we have the opportunity to support them as they turn

their missions focus to our City. Since the cost of

shipping household furniture and other items would

be so expensive from Malaysia to St. John’s, the

Winsor family will be arriving here with little to no

items for their new home. We want to do whatever

we can to help them out! There is a checklist of

needed items in the foyer - why not stop by and see if

there is something that you can donate? Having these

items would be a fabulous start for them and a

tremendous answer to prayer! Gently used items

would also be appreciated. Smaller items can be

brought into the church the week of August 26-30.

We can arrange to pick up your larger items and

furniture and deliver to their home at the end of

August. For more information, please contact

Rochelle Newman or Faith Ann Collins at

[email protected] or 753-5888. Thank you in

advance for your generosity!

September Gospel Concert:

Gaither Vocal Band until 2008, will make his first

appearance (with his band) in St. John’s on Sept. 18th.

It will take place at Bethesda Pentecostal Church.

Plan now to attend and purchase your

ticket ($32.00) early.

Available at the following locations:

RBBH and the S.A. Christian Book Store.

Please note: Jennifer Lee will be selling tickets here

at Bethesda (cash only). You can contact her at
