Zonta assist those in need through projects such as breast care cushions and bras for third world countries. The Zonta ladies are going to be making fascinators for Octobra. If ladies would like to donate old bras to give away and feathers, netting, headbands and haberdashery suitable to decorate the fascinators that would be great. The Helpers HighSo where do these good feelings come from? When you are kind to another person, your brain’s pleasure and reward centers light up, as if you were the recipient of the good deed—not the giver, according to research from Emory University. This phenomenon has actually earned the nickname “helper’s high” among psychologists who study generosity, and some researchers theorize that the sensation is also due to a release of endorphins, those feel-good chemicals associated with runner’s high. It’s no surprise then, that a 2010 Harvard Business School survey of happiness in 136 countries found that people who are altruistic—in this case, people who were generous financially, such as with charitable donations—were happiest overall.

Of course, part of why giving feels good is because we know we’re lifting someone else’s spirits. Receiving a gift, assistance, or even an encouraging smile activates the brain’s reward center, a phenomenon that’s hard to explain but easy to feel—just think back to the last time a stranger held the door for you or your partner surprised you with your favorite meal. The sudden appearance of these positive feelings is what helps keep the giving chain alive: Somebody who has just received a bit of kindness is elevated, happy, and grateful, making them likely to help someone else, according to a 2007 study from Harvard University.

But there’s more. The effects of kindness can be so great that you actually don’t have to be directly linked to a giving chain to get in on the act. By simply witnessing generosity you may be inspired to do something generous of your own, according to new research from Fowler, who found that simply observing kindness can spur more acts of good. Humans often mimic behavior they see, and that includes generosity, which explains why some of these stories of small acts of kindness become bigger news. Even people who simply hear about a giving chain are often inspired to give, starting a chain of positivity all their own.

THE SCIENCE OF GIVINGWHY ONE ACT OF KINDNESS IS USUALLY FOLLOWED BY ANOTHERSmall acts of kindness are sometimes powerful enough to make major headlines. In fact, you’ve probably read about or watched a few of these stories unfold in the past month. Here’s how it usually plays out: One person will do a good deed—such as placing a cup of coffee on reserve for a homeless person, or paying off a stranger’s layby balance at Kmart—then a trend will start, with more and more people getting in on the act. The result is a feel-good story for all. The benefactors are happy to have done a good deed and the recipients are pleased to have been given a small but meaningful helping hand. However, the circle of generosity doesn’t end there—in fact, it’s exponentially bigger.

Recipients of kindness generally want to keep paying it forward, says James Fowler, Professor of Medical Genetics and Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. In fact, in one of Fowler’s studies, he found that a single act of kindness typically inspired several more acts of generosity. The scientific name for this chain of altruism is “upstream reciprocity,” but you can think of it as a domino effect of warm and fuzzy feelings: If you drop a coin into an expired parking meter, the recipient of that small act of generosity will be inspired to do a kind act for someone else, and on and on.

KINDNESS is priceless

In Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. On this day we celebrate the love and dedication of fathers, step-fathers, guardians, fathers-in-law, uncles and grandfathers and thank them for being our teacher, carer, friend and role model.

FATHERS DAY 13

R U OK? Day is a national day of action in September dedicated to reminding people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, "R U OK?", in a meaningful way, because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a difference to anyone who might be struggling.

Tea Room TalkQUESTIONS TO GET TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER

A man asks a farmer near a field, “Sorry sir, would you mind if I crossed your field instead of going around it? You see, I have to catch the 4:23 train.”

The farmer says, “Sure, go right ahead. And if my bull sees you, you’ll even catch the 4:11 one.”

A patient bursts into a doctor’s office, “Doctor, I believe I’m a deck of cards!”

The doctor calmly replies, “Go sit in the waiting room, please, I’ll be dealing with you later.”

6 SEPTEMBER 2018 - Vacenti Vibes Issue 15

Hello everyone!

Wow, what a jam packed August. I don’t think there is enough space to tell you everything that went on so bare with me.

We helped Rosemarie and Phil celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary! Congratulations to them!

Staff have been wearing jeans every Friday to help raise money to “buy a bail” for the farmers and rural aid. It has been amazing to see everyones generosity in supporting rural communities not only suffering through natural disasters but communities at risk of dissipating.

There was a whole week dedicated to the EKKA that brought a whole lot of fun and festivities. There were fashion parades, animal visits, carnival games and country dress up days. Residents enjoyed show bags, ice-cream with strawberries on top, hot dogs, fruit displays and side show alley games. The favourite of the animals had to be the twin baby goats that were 1 week old. The vibe around the home was electric and fun was had from all.

The Circle of Men, had a great reminisce about the Royal Show and how the show bags were really just free sample bags of products and delicious treats. Some mentioned the train line that operated special trains, some being historic steam trains.

We definitely didn’t miss out on the chilly 'EKKA winds' that descended on us.

Marcia had a visit from her 4 day old great grandson. 100 years between them. This was a very dear and special moment.

I’m looking forward to September and all the activities we have planned.

Take care till next month,

Jenelle McPhersonFacility Manager

The months are certainly going by very quickly. During August we have enjoyed some regular activities and entertainment

and saw some new activities and entertainment at Esida and Esida Lodge.

Thank you to all the residents and staff members who got behind our themed dress up days for August. It was great to see the different outfits and costumes. We had the Odd Sock Day. It was funny seeing staff and residents walk around with odd socks on to promote mental health awareness.

We had so much fun in August that we didn’t need to attend the EKKA as we enjoyed a week full of different events and activities at Esida and Esida Lodge. The staff brought along EKKA novelties as they dressed up in all sorts of themes you would find at the EKKA. Our categories consisted of fashion, animals, sideshow alley, and country farm style.

For the past few weeks the lifestyle team have had Lily from Seton College spend every Wednesday learning all things lifestyle and helping out the lifestyle team for her school work experience. Lily will only be with us for another 5 weeks and we wish her all the best with finishing year 12.

We welcomed Michelle’s boutique clothing and gift store to our facility for the first time this month. Residents got to have a look around at the different clothing they had on sale. Some residents even bought some new clothes.

We are in the process of relocating our resident's library from in Esida and Esida Lodge to being a mobile library trolley that circulates every 2nd Friday at 9:00am. We will have the library trolley come around room to room so that you can borrow reading materials at your leisure.

Until next month,

Take care and stay well, we’ll see you at your next activity.

8 SEPTEMBER 2018 - Vacenti Vibes Issue 15

Hello,I thought I would share a very positive story from a current resident residing in

Lorocco who will be leaving Lorocco in the first week of September. Tony came to Lorocco 7 months ago with a debilitating mental illness. Wife Judy was also undergoing cancer treatment and discharge options were limited. Tony was discharged from hospital to Lorocco, was underweight and bed bound; the future was a dark place. Tony will be discharged home to wife Judy on the 6th of September. Tony’s journey has been remarkable, physically and mentally. The time apart has allowed them both to recover. Lorocco is privileged to have shared the journey of both Judy and Tony.I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Lorocco care staff member Grace Obeng-Gyimah (also known as Amazing Grace). Grace has been awarded the "Passing on Appreciation Award which is recognised via the AUSTRALASIAN College of Care Leadership and Management. Grace has contributed to the Vacenti Way and ensures privacy, dignity and respect are met everyday. She is a valuable team member who not only works with all staff to complete documentation and ACFI but is a mentor and role model to all new care staff. Congratulations and thank you! Grace has been awarded a certificate, meal voucher from the kitchen to enjoy the chef's amazing cooking and a $50 Coles & Myer voucher.Andrew Grayson (picture on following page) is a new care staff member joining the Lorocco team. Andrew was previously an accountant and is excited and prefers to work within the health care industry. Andrew enjoys reading and his favorite meal is pasta. The popular exercise classes have now been extended to Saturday and Sunday mornings. Marilyn Mendoza was the successful applicant and is now currently working with Jillian to support and extend lifestyle hours on weekends. Lorocco has also had some memorable times with Portia, Vacenti's pet therapy dog. Portia was quite the distraction within the Terrace and also made an impact within the facility. I will be taking leave during the month of September. I will be enjoying the sun and relaxed vibes of Thailand, sight seeing and taking daily tours. Until next time, I look forward to returning to Brisbane’s fantastic Spring.Cheryl Targett,Facility Manager.

Hello everyone, This month we brought the country to the city with our very own EKKA

celebrations, Old Mac Donald’s Farm paid us a visit for the 2nd year in a row. It was wonderful to watch our residents interacting and enjoying this special pet therapy. The smiles and engagement were absolutely priceless, the photos say it all. Everyone delighted in carnival treats, dagwood dogs (pluto pups), pies and sausage rolls and the iconic strawberry ice-cream cones. The atmosphere was amazing as we reminisced in these sensory delights. The EKKA mystery Surprise show bags especially delighted the young at heart. Thanks to the generous staff and residents we were able to help and support Queensland farmers in need.Through an organisation called Drought Angels, we whipped around the hat here at Lorocco and rose over $800 dollars. Our residents were glad to contribute to buying bales of hay as so many have lived a rural life.Next month we are holding a special high tea to highlight Women’s Health Week, supporting the Jean Hales Foundation. Healthy ageing is vital to our emotional and physical well being. The theme will be 'Thinking PINK'. We will be addressing the pink elephants and Jean Hales has kindly donated gifts for all attendees. So embrace your health by wearing a bit of pink and marking Friday the 7th of September, 10am in the Cove in your calender. Everyone is welcome but you must wear PINK.I would like to personally welcome the lovely Marilyn Mendosa to our lifestyle team. Previously an AIN at Lorocco, Marilyn will now be conducting activities each weekend. You will see her smiling face between 10-2 pm Saturdays and Sundays. This Sunday Marilyn will be cranking up the BBQ for a sensational sausage sizzle for our amazing fathers. To all our father's everywhere, we wish you all a fabulous day on Father's Day, Sunday September 1st.Until next month, keep smiling, keep active, and spread kindness like confetti.Jill Campbell,Lifestyle Coordinator

SEPTEMBER 2018 - Vacenti Vibes Issue 1510

Greetings!

Another month has gone by and I've enjoyed settling in. In this issue I would like

to allow Jo Fazio, our Lifestyle Coordinator for Marebello, to share some of her story with us.

"Born in London, of Anglo Indian descendant, I migrated to Australia with my family, as a teenager, finishing my schooling in Melbourne. After finding the move somewhat difficult, especially being placed into a girl's convent after coming from a co-ed education I left school as soon as I could to pursue a career in hairdressing.

We moved to the Sunny State, where I married, had two great children and after owning a couple of salons, I decided I needed a change of careers. Applying for many jobs, I received and accepted a traineeship as a Personal Carer in 2008. I thoroughly enjoyed being amongst the elderly, having huge respect and interest in peoples fascinating lives.

I started filling in for Lifestyle and really enjoyed this area, so I decided to gain my qualifications and since 2010 have worked continually in Lifestyle, in both residential facilities and the community. I am a person who is always seeking to learn new things, from dance, to art, to new sports, like running! I like to keep active, and have a great interest in travelling and learning about other cultures. I get really excited about what I do on a daily basis getting great pleasure in bringing smiles and fulfillment, to those in my care.

Many years ago, I volunteered at this very facility, doing craft sessions with my, then, 3 year old. This was when I discovered the role of a Diversional Therapist. I am overjoyed to have the role as Lifestyle Coordinator at Marebello and look forward to providing many opportunities for our residents to seek fulfillment from their days." - Jo Fazio

Thank you Jo. Until next month, see you around.

Katie FairmanFacility Manager

Hello Everyone!

My name is Jo. I’m so excited to say I joined Marebello in early August as

Lifestyle Coordinator. What a month to commence! So many magical moments shared by our residents.

In my first week, I was asked by the entertainer C’est la Vie if I could dance, so I did, which really made the residents smile! I’m not shy and very much will be involved in joining in the activities we put together. Our residents also enjoyed performances from Jim Bibby who joined us for Happy Hour, pianist Daphne, Melly Melody and our wonderful Music Therapist, Anita, who happily took her keyboard around the facility. Residents enjoyed an impromptu sing-along with Lynne leading, singing along to those familiar tunes.

Our knitting group has grown with some coming along purely for the natter. Eileen took a group out to Cleveland, for an authentic Chinese lunch which residents were talking about for days.

Show day was a big hit, a glorious Winters Day, with many coming out to enjoy the activities. There was much determination from some as they attempted to fish out the ducks for a prize. Arts and crafts were proudly displayed, and everyone indulged in a strawberry ice-cream. Wisteria also had a show day enjoying games, bubble blowing, and of course an ice-cream.

We farewelled Jodie, who has done an amazing job with Lifestyle. Luckily, we will still get to see her happy face as she remains with us, joining the nursing team.

Lots of ideas and activities to come, so watch this space! If anyone has any thoughts of joining our happy volunteer team, we would love to hear from you.

Until next time, stay active!

Hi everyone and welcome to our September update from Casa Dámore.A warm welcome to our residents, families

and staff who have joined our community this month. It is a pleasure to have you with us and to get to know you. This month on the 12th of August, our resident Phyllis Stahlfast-Moller celebrated her 101st birthday. Phyllis enjoyed her special day having lunch with her family. Congratulations and happy 101st birthday to you Phyllis. This month our featured staff member is our new Clinical Manager, Melanie Price, who commenced during August.

About Melanie Price (Clinical Manager):I originated from “Sunny Blighty” – that’s correct, I am a Pommy. I have two beautiful children, Harry – 11 years and Molly – 7 years old. My husband, Justin and I immigrated to

Melbourne in March 2009 with Harry. In October 2015, we relocated to Brisbane and are very happy with the decision we made. During my training to become a Registered Nurse (RN), I worked as a carer in Aged Care before qualifying in 1998, specialising in Orthopedic Intensive Care before transitioning in to Acute Spinal Injuries in England’s National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. This role was both challenging and rewarding in so many ways. I then transitioned into Intensive Care (ICU) where I worked for 4 years before coming to Australia. I then worked at Monash Medical Centre in ICU and theatres where I gained experience as an anaesthetic and recovery RN. After having my daughter, I moved away from the hospital setting to work in aged care where I became a Clinical Manager and have not looked back.Favourite Pastimes: I absolutely love singing!Favourite Foods: Pasta, salmon, chicken and veggies.Favourite Movies: Action movies and Musicals.I am very much looking forward to meeting you all and this opportunity with Vacenti. I align with the core values and believe in excellence which I will work collaboratively with the team to achieve as much as possible with day to day challenges.Catch you next month!

Jason ColesFacility Manager

Happy September to you all!Another busy month has gone by, cram packed with a lot of activities, outings and

special events. We started the month off with celebrating all the residents’ birthdays, where we got together and had afternoon tea and birthday cake. This month we are heading off to City Hall for the Tuesday concert to see Wicketty Wak and will be have morning tea at the Shingle Inn before the show. We are also heading off to Fortitude Valley for a Chinese meal which residents have asked to do for one of our monthly outings In August we started a friendship with Zonta Ladies who endeavor to empower women through service and advocacy. In doing so we fundraise for our ongoing specific projects and have fellowship and fun along the way with like-minded women. They will be visiting Casa in the first Saturday of the month to spend time and assist residents by offering 1:1 time, pamper sessions and a chat. On the 3rd Sunday of the month Casa residents are helping make breast pillows for victims of breast cancer. These are used to assist and give comfort in the recovery stage from breast surgery. Family and friends are more than welcome to come along and join in the session with the residents and Zonta ladies. On the 23rd August we celebrated Casa Show Day. We bought the EKKA to the facility. We had Viv’s animal farm visit with lambs, goats, chickens, guinea pigs, a friendly alpaca and some sneaky rats that hid from the residents. The residents also visited the farmers market, enjoyed dagwood dogs, rainbow ice-cream and show bags. Residents had the chance to cuddle baby animals and reminisce about the times they went to the EKKA which resulted in some great stories. We had a guess the amount of "lollies in the jar" competition where money raised is to be donated to the Farmer's Drought Fund. Congratulations to Margaret and her family for the closest guess of 937 (930 lollies in the jar). I would like to thank all the family, friends and residents who joined us at the Casa show!See you all around, Marieann, Zoe and Melissa (Lifestyle Team).

14 SEPTEMBER 2018 - Vacenti Vibes Issue 15

Hello all,Spring is sprung and it is the time of year that I go on Cycle QLD for a 9 day bike ride.

This year we are riding from Cape Tribulation to Daintree, down to Port Douglas, up to the Atherton Tableland to a couple of towns up there, including Atherton, and from there we ride back down to Cairns. I will be out of the office from Wednesday 29th August, returning to work on Monday 17th September. During my absence Jane Gosche - Operations Manager, will assist Lisi Mpofu - Clinical Manager, at Portofino. Jane is contactable at [email protected] or on 0439508578. When I return I will host a morning tea to show and tell photos from my trip to the residents. In September, Brooke Fenton will be working with Robbie Brown to conduct an R U OK Day morning tea with residents and staff on the 13th. Families are welcome to attend wearing the colour Yellow to support this day. It is my sad news to tell you that Paula Withers, our Lifestyle Coordinator, has resigned as she is retiring. The good news is that Karen has accepted the position to step up as Coordinator. Paula has agreed to be available to Vacenti on a casual basis. The summer menu has been finalised and will be implemented on Monday the 3rd September. If you would like a copy of this menu please see Tash at reception and she will be happy to provide a copy. In Portia news, she has reached her full size, however, she may fill out a bit more as she has just been desexed. This has not seemed to have slowed her down. We are supposed to keep her quiet for 10 days (as if). Portofino has tough competition with the other Vacenti homes vying for her attentions and presence.Until next month, Ciao,Ian ByronFacility Manager

As July closed we celebrated with Norman and Eileen Hall as they received the Quinn Medal, awarded by the

Catholic Church in recognition of more than 20 years faithful and significant giving to Catholic charities and projects. Norman and Eileen chose over many years to give to projects assisting young people to make their way in life.As you can see in our photos this month, much fun was had in our Specialist Care Suites building towers of paper cups with the award for highest tower going to John who managed 12 levels! A few of our photos show our daily exercise class. For 30 minutes each morning about 20% of our residents participate in exercise focusing on balance, range of motion and some aerobics. It’s all made more fun with high tech equipment such as balloons, hoola hoops and noodles! Our Portside walk in August gave us a close-up view of the Steve Irwin Sea Shepherd, one of a fleet of vessels commissioned to protect and defend the world’s marine wildlife. The highlight of August so far would have to be “EKKA in the Piazza” with a visit from a mobile animal farm, side show alley games, live music, a clown and Ekka themed refreshments. We were blessed with one of those few beautiful balmy days (before the cold hit again!) and being outside was a joy. Thanks to the families who brought young children into our midst, enhancing the EKKA atmosphere with their laughter and antics. Thanks also to Liz and Marina for volunteering to help – much appreciated. So many fun photos, so little space.

Hello Everyone,

Here we are at the most colourful time of the year. It is Spring and that brings with it

the old 'Adage', "Spring is sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where the birdies is". So with Spring in the air and the warm weather, it is a wonderful time of the year. We, here at Con Noi, have been celebrating with plenty of happy snaps as we move into our 4th Anniversary since opening.

We welcomed our new residents Hazel and Kevin McGuinness on the 20th of August. They have come to us here from a large home to scale down. Welcome Kevin and Hazel.

Now as the warmer weather is here we will commence our Aqua Aerobics class on 5th September with Melissa Champley. With the water at 29oC, it will be great. Our Aquanauts are looking forward to getting back into the exercises.

Our weekly programs are a buzz and a hive of activity as everyday there is something different for every one. We have had an 80th birthday recently with the reminder of the OBE ("Over Bloomin 80"). Congratulations John.

On the run up to Christmas we have started to plan many activities including Happy Hour with David Sanderco playing the piano and the residents “Choir”. The Fashion Parade with Portofino on Tuesday 16th October. The "Bar B Que" for the residents, Halloween, Melbourne cup and the Christmas party. All in all, congratulations to a great program arranged by our residents committee.

We are still receiving enquiries on the remaining apartments here at Con Noi. Hear us on the radio and come on down to see for yourself. You can also phone Allen on 0418 588 468 to make an appointment.

SHORT STORYCounty Fair RefreshmentsBY ANNIE MCMAHON

Isabella loved the county fair, with all the flashy colors, the sounds of music and laughter, and the cotton candy smell. After trying a few rides and earning prizes at the ring toss, she noticed a small crowd near the ferris wheel. People were gathered so tightly she couldn’t see what was happening.

Isabella and her elder brother Michael made their way as close as possible and stretched their necks. People were gasping and laughing, whispering and yelping.

Mr. Murphy, the school principal, burst out of the crowd, dripping wet. He was laughing too, wringing his soaked baseball cap and putting his glasses back on.

Hows the water, Mr. Murphy?” Mayor Johnson asked, holding a lemonade.

“Just fine, just fine!” the wet principal answered cheerfully. “You’ll find out soon enough!”

Mayor Johnson’s smile faded, and he looked worriedly around him, provoking another round of laughter. “I can’t be next, I’m in charge of the tank. Now we need a new volunteer! Any volunteer?”

As people moved away from the dunk tank to mingle and talk, Isabella wondered who would be next. She secretly hoped it would be her second grade teacher.

“Michael, look!” she said, louder than she intended. A raccoon had climbed in and stood on the chair.

“We have a volunteer!” The mayor’s loud voice overpowered the crowd’s. “Three tickets give you five balls!”

Several people lined up to try their luck.

“How did it get in there?” Isabella whispered to Michael.

Before she could wonder any longer, she heard a big splash. A soaking wet raccoon dashed between her and Michael, holding Mr. Murphy’s leftover candied apple in its mouth.RESOURSE: HTTPS://LETTERPILE.COM/CREATIVE-WRITING/FLASHFICTIONFOREVERYONE

THE WORLD'S MOST TIRELESS DAD

On a brutally hot day I walked past a miniature golf course and saw a dad following three small children

from hole to hole. “Who’s winning?” I shouted. “I am,” said one kid. “Me,”

said another. “No, me,” yelled the third. Sweat dripping down his face, the dad gasped, “Their mother is.”

—Tom Lappas

THE WORLD’S MOST SENTIMENTAL DAD

The family was viewing old slides and one flashed on the screen that

caught everyone’s attention. My father, wearing his favorite golf shirt,

was holding me at the tender age of three weeks. The look on his face

told all. “There’s my prize possession,” my father said. Touched, I smiled at him as he continued, “I wonder whatever happened to that golf

shirt?”

—Jeanne Graves

THE WORLD’S MOST SYMPATHETIC DADFour students walked in halfway

though the American history test my father was giving at the community college. “Sorry,” they said, “We had a flat tire.” An understanding man, Dad said that if they could all answer just one question correctly, he would give them each an “A” for the exam. They agreed. So dad handed each one a piece of paper, placed them in four separate corners and said, “Write

down which tire was flat.”

—Kurt Smith

AND THE AWARD GOES TO...

THE WORLD’S MOST LEVEL-HEADED DADMy uncle was driving to a hockey

game with his two sons when their car hit a low-flying duck. After

absorbing the shock of what just happened, Uncle Mike broke the

silence with, “Well, there’s a bird that didn’t live up to his name.”

—Jason Bulbuk

for this feature, please email [email protected].
