SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Most of you are aware of ‘bugs’ and ‘germs’, and know that people often become ill as a result of exposure to them. So what are the different types of microorganisms, how do they spread and cause disease, and methods of prevention and treatment? Outbreaks of infectious diseases have caused global concerns some leading to pandemics, so how can they be controlled?

BTEC Applied Human Biology Transition Task

Task Introduction: To understand the diseases of the immune system.

Task Instructions

• Research two different diseases of the immune system: one autoimmune disease (e.g., type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s, rheumatoid arthritis) and one immune deficiency disorder (e.g., HIV, leukaemia, common variable immunodeficiency (CVID).

• Produce a summary/overview of each disease. Make this as visual and engaging as you can.

• Include details on: causes, symptoms and treatments.
