WE ARE GLAD YOU ARE HERE! Claremont United Methodist Church is a welcoming and reconciling congregation, affirming its ministry with the whole family of God regardless of age, race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, economic situation, or marital status. Claremont United Methodist Church believes its diversity is a blessing through which persons are strengthened to love and serve. INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE IN WORSHIP: Because language has the power to shape our thinking about one another, Claremont United Methodist Church uses inclusive language for Bible readings from the New Revised Standard Version. Some historical texts that are widely known and loved are left unaltered. This, we believe, in no way diminishes our commitment to inclusive expression. We invite persons to change the words of hymns deemed to be exclusive so that the hymns might have meaning for all.

FRAGRANCES IN CHURCH (Men and Women): Please be mindful that someone near you may be asthmatic or have chemical sensitivities. We ask you to avoid wearing strong smelling cosmetics, as they may trigger a terrible reaction from others. Thank you!

The Plight of Asylum-Seeking Families Continues to Worsen

We at Claremont United Methodist Church (CUMC) responded swiftly to the need of over 2,700 children of immigrants seeking asylum at the U.S./Mexican border. These children were forcibly taken from their parents and scattered throughout the United States in April and May of 2018. Our church raised over $10,000 to assist with the legal representation of separated children through Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON). The plight continues as more families have been detained in the last couple of months, and the number of children separated from their family continues to grow. In addition to the remaining separated children, there are over 15,000 youth and children at detention facilities throughout the United States.

The CUMC Creative Peacemaking Committee has decided to keep our congregation aware of this urgent need and to encourage church members to continue to support the efforts of JFON by donating funds for the legal representation of separated children and asylum-seeking families currently in detention centers.

Your contribution to CUMC, designated to JFON, will help to ensure that separated children and families in detention facilities receive the legal assistance they need. You can also donate directly to JFON by visiting this link, www.njfon.org. Please open your hearts and prayerfully consider a financial gift. (JFON is an agency of the United Methodist Committee on Relief.)

INVITATION FOR SUMMER READING

As a congregation we are committed to dismantling racism. As together we explore what this means, we can do some reading and then talk with each other. The small group that is focused on dismantling racism has selected three books for your consideration this summer. All three books are available for purchase on Sunday mornings at the Dismantling Racism table on the patio during coffee fellowship time. Please stop by to take a look at the selections.

In August and September, we will form discussion groups based on these books. You are strongly encouraged to choose one of the books. Read it between now and August, and then attend a group discussion for that book. Details for discussion meetings will follow.

For information, talk with Frank Cookingham or email him at [email protected].

Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race by Debby Irving (2014) With self-revealing humor, Irving narrates her lifelong journey toward understanding racism as a white, middle-class woman. First discovering that “white” is a race, Irving also realizes that her life-long racial blindness has affected her personal and professional relationships, and begins to learn what she might do about it. Very readable and practical – with questions throughout for the reader to ponder regarding his/her own racial journey. It’s an excellent introduction to the various aspects of the complicated racial issues.

America’s Original Sin by Jim Wallis (2016) Wallis, an evangelical leader for social justice for decades, analyzes racism and white privilege, and prescribes what white people in faith communities need to do as responsible citizens to promote healing and justice in a New America. If you have read Waking Up White or have a basic understanding of race issues, this book will deepen your understanding.

Homegoing* by Yaa Gyasi (2016), a novel This novel covers 400 years and eight generations, following the paths of two half-sisters born in Ghana. They are born into different villages, each unaware of the other. One will marry an Englishman and lead a life of comfort in the palatial rooms of the Cape Coast Castle. The other will be captured in a raid on her village, imprisoned in the very same castle, and sold into slavery. The book follows the parallel paths of these sisters and their descendants through eight generations from the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, from the American Civil War to the Jazz Age of Harlem. It illuminates slavery’s troubled

legacy both for those who were taken and those who stayed – and shows how the memory of captivity has been inscribed on the soul of our nation.

THE REVEREND LINDA VOGEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP In November 2017, Claremont UMC lost one of its greatest champions of LGBTQ equality in the death of the Rev. Linda Vogel. While not LGBTQ herself, she along with her husband, the Rev. Dwight Vogel, pushed the agenda of inclusion of LGBTQ people in our denomination. With Linda’s blessing, this scholarship was established with generous donations made in her memory.

This past academic year of 2018-2019, the scholarship was awarded to a transgender individual named Javi, who was homeless for a significant period after foster care ended because of his age of majority. Through this scholarship, Javi was supplied with a computer and materials needed to begin his program at Riverside Community College. Javi was so thankful for this help. We hope that he is soon able to visit CUMC on a Sunday so that you can meet this remarkable young person.

This scholarship is open to any young person who has been in the care of the court system, either at home or at one time in a court ordered placement, and has not yet reached the age of 23. UPDATE: We received word that Javi attained a 4.0 GPA! The terms of the scholarship state that this GPA entitles him to receive the scholarship for the upcoming academic year. There will be no new applications received this year, but please do keep this scholarship in mind for any young people you know who may qualify for the future. We still accept donations to the Rev. Linda Vogel Fund, and we cannot think of a better way to continue our love for our sister in Christ. Thank you!

Be a Voice for those Who Have No Voice… Send a letter for Amnesty International! Letters for July are on the front desk in the Narthex. Attached to each packet of letters is an update on recent cases. Please mail the letters by the end of the month. International postage is $1.15 per letter. Thank you!

Update About The Window… This week’s mailed issue of The Window, our bi-weekly newsletter, was delayed. The bulk mail office of the Claremont Post Office was closed for several days, delaying when we could take the mailing to be sent out. Extra copies are available in the Narthex, or you can view it online at claremontumc.net/cumc/Newsletters/WINDOW/TheWindow_2019-07-24.pdf. Thank you for understanding!
