Craig is the county seat of Moffat County bordered by Utah and Wyoming. Residents and visitors have access to millions of acres of public lands from national forests to high mountain plains, to rugged canyons to wild, free flowing rivers. Moffat County is home to wild horse herds, mule deer, pronghorn and one of the largest elk herds in the United States.
Recreational activities include world class skiing in Steamboat Springs less than an hour away. We enjoy mountain recreational activities within a short distance from town including camping, river rafting, snowmobiling, four wheeling, mountain biking, hiking, fishing and hunting.
The Yampa Valley Regional Airport is 20 miles away. During ski season it is host to four major airlines — American, United, Delta, and Alaska Airlines — with direct nonstop service to Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Newark, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Seattle and Denver. Year round service to Denver International Airport is provided by United Airlines.
A new hospital opened in 2009 and a new Colorado Northwestern Community College campus is a state-of-the-art facility offering a full range of Arts & Science programs and vocational programs.
Craig also is home to the largest power plant in Colorado, served by two coal mines that are major employers for the area. The area also is experiencing
increased oil and natural gas exploration and development.
The city’s residents rate our services high. Both water and wastewater treatment facilities have been modernized and expanded to serve Craig well into the foreseeable future.
The city operates and maintains several ball fields, a swimming complex, open space and trails within its boundaries. Elkhead Reservoir is owned by the City and managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife not only provides a water source for the City and its industries but also is a beautiful recreational facility providing excellent fishing, boating, water skiing and camping opportunities. There also is a beautiful 18 hole public golf course on the edge of town along the Yampa River.
All of these amenities make Craig a great place to raise a family, locate a business, or both!

When it comes to post-secondary education, the Craig community has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years and will only continue to expand.
In 2011, Colorado Northwestern Community College’s Craig campus went from being a small central location with buildings spread all over town to a single larger site where all its academic programs could thrive.
CNCC offers many options for a variety of interests. Its career and technical programs allow pupils to get hands-on experience in the field that could become a lifelong job for them, such as cosmetology, massage therapy, mine training and auto and diesel technology, with ample space for practical learning. The college’s proximity to The Memorial Hospital adds to a strong partnership between TMH and CNCC’s nursing program.
Courses in subjects like English, biology, business studies and more are transferable to larger schools should students decide to move on to a different path. The Craig and Rangely campuses of the institution are seeking out new educational opportunities constantly.
Additionally, CNCC announced in early 2015 that it launched a paleontology program, set to kick off with a student dig in the summer of 2015.
Thanks to taxpayer funding, the regular in-state tuition rate is half for CNCC students who have lived in Colorado for more than one year and Moffat County for more than six months, allowing an affordable college experience for full-time students or for those hoping to enhance their knowledge in a single subject.
Additionally, the school hosts many events to which all are welcome, fulfilling its goal as a place for the community to learn.

For high school ages, Moffat County School District provides the Youth Experiencing Success Alternative Program, which caters to students who feel Moffat County High School isn’t the best fit for them, whether they feel uncomfortable in a larger school setting or if they have other needs, such as a unique family situation or even a full-time job.
The Alternative School allows students to chart their own course with four-hour sessions at the MCSD administration building or at home, if necessary, using the computer-based Apex Learning, which covers the same educational standards as MCHS.
The style of the program also allows them to participate in MCHS extracurricular activities and sports if they’re inclined, while being able to either catch up to where their peers are, or, in some cases, graduate high school early and move on to college or a career sooner.
A similar set-up is available in Craig with GOAL Academy. The Guided Online Academic Learning program, not associated with the local school district, functions as an online charter school with locations across Colorado. Craig’s site is within Centennial Mall and allows students to work with local instructors in a flexible environment suited to their needs.
Parents who would like to see their children’s education include more of a faith element can enroll younger kids in Eagle’s Nest Preschool through Calvary Baptist Church. For ages kindergarten and older, Calvary Baptist School is a non-denominational private school that utilizes the Accelerated Christian Education program. Space is limited for this school, which has been in operation since 2010.
Many families in Craig employ a home school format, and a number of them are involved with Northwest Colorado Home School Association. The organization is also Christian-based and nondenominational and serves as a local cooperative support network, with parents and children collaborating frequently by sharing resources, ideas, techniques and more to create the best possible learning environment.
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOxOther educational opportunities
20 Welcome to Craig
Moffat County School District is rich with learning
opportunities for the students of Craig, more than
2,000 every year.
Starting with the youngest residents, the district
offers multiple preschool options for children between
the ages of 3 and 5, who can attend morning or
afternoon sessions at the Early Childhood Center
within the district administration building. The program
is the hub for all early childhood development
in MCSD and is staffed by numerous child care
professionals.
Preschool is also offered through each of the
four elementary schools within Craig city limits: East,
Ridgeview, Sandrock and Sunset. They are spread
across town and each feature their own charms and
dedicated teachers for their students ranging from
all-day kindergarten to fifth grade. Programs promoting
literacy are student favorites and the schools continue
to implement technology into the classroom more and
more each year to enhance their children’s worldviews.
Craig Middle School offers a gateway between the
elementary level and high school for kids from sixth
through eighth grade with the newest school building
in the district. A greater number of extracurricular
activities start at this level, such as student council and
school sports teams and more, ensuring students are
receiving a well-rounded education.
As the institution that prepares teenagers for
adulthood, Moffat County High School features a
wide array of programs for students of any interest,
whether they’re accomplished athletes, talented
artists or high-achieving academics who plan to go
on to do great things in the career world. Enrolling in
dual-credit programs through Colorado Northwestern
Community College allows upperclassmen to complete
college courses ahead of time. Some students have
been known to finish their senior year with both
a high school diploma and an associate’s degree
simultaneously, demonstrating the kind of triumphs
Moffat County School District can produce.

If you’re looking for a large and affordable home, Craig is ripe for the picking.
In late 2014, the average listing price for homes in Craig hovered around $155,000 — a steal compared to other cities across Colorado.
“The median list price per square foot in Craig is $107, which is lower than the Moffat County average of $108. The median price of homes currently listed in Craig is $155,000 while the median price of homes that sold is $126,923. The median rent price in Craig is $750, which is the same as the Moffat County median of $750,” according to Zillow.com.
Craig is a buyer’s marker with dozens of homes up for sale.
The Craig Association of Realtors suggests a few hints to help make buying a home simpler:
Use a real estate professional
Before you start house hunting, interview several brokers.
Find one who listens to your needs and interacts well with you. Make sure your
agent has a good overall knowledge of the local area, the market and its trends.
Write down your priorities
Determine what is most important to you. Does the property you’re considering meet those needs?
Get pre-qualifi ed
With today’s mortgage market the way it is, it pays to go talk to a mortgage company or your favorite banker and get pre-qualifi ed before you even go look for a home. That way you know what price range you’re qualifi ed to be in.
Drive around
Take the time to study and discover the area. Notice the neighborhoods that feel comfortable to you. Do your homework.
Look at a home’s potential
Whether you are looking for a long-term purchase or a short-term investment, each piece of real estate offers its own distinct potential. Sometimes a little elbow grease will make a simple house the perfect investment.

MEDICAL SERVICES
The tradition of the country doctor in small, rural towns isn’t exactly accurate or refl ective of the amount of medical care available to the people of Craig.
As the main emergency care facility for all of Moffat County, The Memorial Hospital offers state-of-the-art accommodations for anyone who might need its services. A part of Craig since 1950, TMH made signifi cant strides when it completed a new facility in 2009 that would allow continued growth, which is always taking place these days.
Within the hospital itself there are cardiologists, orthopedic surgeons and physical therapy and respiratory therapy departments, among other services.
In recent years, the hospital has added an oncology infusion clinic, employed hospitalists for round-the-clock physician care and added two pediatricians to its staff, a specialty that was not offered before 2012.
Besides pediatrics, TMH Medical Clinic offers professionals in women’s health and obstetrics/gynecology, general surgery and family medicine. The building, the former site of the hospital, also houses a urology clinic and a telehealth clinic operated by Veterans Affairs to give specialized care to those who have served their country and may need an opinion from someone outside of the area.
Family medicine is also offered at numerous practices around town, such as Moffat Family Clinic and YampaCare Family Medicine, while Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association has plentiful health programs for all ages.
Throughout Craig are many practices focusing on providing the best care available, whether they’re dentists, optometrists, chiropractors, physical therapists, hearing specialists, geriatric care providers, mental health professionals and more.
In layman’s terms, Craig has plenty of options to keep you healthy.

With two herds comprising over 50,000 elk in the area surrounding Craig, it’s no wonder the city is known as the Elk Hunting Capital of the World.
Between the Bears Ears herd (16,500 elk) north of the Yampa River and the White River herd (35,000 elk) south of the Yampa, Craig sits between two of the largest migrating elk herds in Colorado, a signifi cant chunk of the nearly 280,000 elk throughout the state. That’s more than any other state in the U.S., making Craig a prime hunting destination with some of the best big game opportunity in the U.S.
For both newcomers to the sport looking to take down their fi rst elk or the experienced hunters seeking out a trophy bull, Craig is the perfect central hub for any big game hunting activity. Cow elk tags are available over the counter in Colorado after each year’s limited draw, and several game management units surrounding Craig offer easy-access with tons of opportunity.
For the more seasoned hunter, elk licenses in the units in the northwestern corner of the country are among the most coveted and diffi cult to draw in the state. Lands in game management unit 201 boast some of the biggest trophy elk in the country.
Elks are not the only draw in Craig, however. Mule deer and pronghorn are popular options throughout Moffat County, while black bears and mountain lions are different sporting options in the northeast part of the county in Routt National Forest.
Moffat County offers thousands of acres of public land for hunters who want to do it on their own, or has dozens of outfi tters based out of Craig to provide guidance and enrich the hunting experience.
For younger hunters, there is even greater opportunity. Colorado Parks & Wildlife offers late season youth elk hunting, giving the next generation of hunters a chance to get out after the fourth rifl e season and have the elk herds all to themselves, a time that often coincides with school holiday breaks, making it easier on youth hunters to participate.
Whatever your age or experience the hunting in Northwest Colorado can’t be beat.

HUNTING
hOW tO huNt iN COlORADOFor newcomers to Colorado, the most important thing to do before hunting is to become a Colorado
resident by getting a new ID. Non-resident hunting rates, especially on big game animals, are signifi cantly more expensive.
The next step is to take a hunter education course through Colorado Parks & Wildlife. Hunting education is available throughout the year all over the state in a variety of formats. Some take place over one weekend, with two lengthy days of instruction, while others are a couple hours per night over the course of a week. The course teaches about hunting safely, gun safety and hunting laws and regulations in Colorado. Consult the CPW website to fi nd a hunter education course that works for you and sign up is inexpensive.
At the end of the course everyone who passes receives a hunter safety card and may now legally hunt in Colorado. After that, getting a hunting license is necessary.
Decide on the animal you’d like to hunt and then there are a couple ways to go for it. The fi rst is in the limited license draw, which occurs each year in April in Colorado. Hunters apply for a license to hunt a specifi c animal in a specifi c unit during a specifi c hunting season, and wait to see if they earn a tag for that spot lottery-style.
The limited draw is the only way to hunt certain animals in Colorado because of the overwhelming demand for those licenses. Hunting a bull moose or bull elk in certain units can take years of applying before getting lucky. But the longer you apply, the better chance you have of drawing a tag. Hunters who don’t draw earn points each year and those with more points are given a higher opportunity to draw in future years.
If you don’t get the licenses you wanted in the limited draw, there’s still an opportunity to pick up over the counter licenses. Leftover licenses can be bought online at the CPW website, or are sold at a wide variety of stores (from grocery to hardware stores) and outfi tters around the state.
Once you’ve got a license, you’re good to go! Just make sure to hunt with the proper amount of hunter orange and follow gun safety laws (all covered in the hunter education course).

CULTURE
The town of Craig is rich with different arts media, as well as strong ties to the past that are prominently displayed in local museums.
The Museum of Northwest Colorado has been in its current location since 1991, expanding from a small exhibition within the Moffat County Courthouse. The establishment is home to many displays of Western heritage and is always fi nding new materials to show what life was like in a different time period, whether with artifacts used in the 19th century or a look at the numerous families to pass through Craig schools over the years, many of which are still prominent in the area.
On the east side of town, visitors will fi nd the historic Marcia Car, a private, luxurious railroad coach built in Chicago in 1906 for David Moffat, Denver banker, businessman and railroad fi nancier. Named after Moffat’s daughter, Marcia Moffat McClurg, the car is a unique look into early railroad travel from a wealthy owner’s point of view. Tours of the Marcia Car are available Monday through Friday throughout the summer by stopping in at the Craig Chamber of Commerce, 360 E. Victory Way.
Call 1-800-864-4405 to learn more or schedule a tour.
On the outskirts of Craig lies the Wyman Living History Museum, which houses a huge assortment of items collected over the years by founder Lou Wyman, who started the facility in 2006 to honor the spirit of his homesteader father. Its inventory includes anything and everything you could imagine, its biggest display being an authentic M47 Patton tank used in World War II.
The museum also offers a huge outdoor area for events throughout the year and houses its pet, Junior the elk. Blacksmithing sessions during the summer also get patrons in touch with the days of yore.
The arts community of Craig is a small but

productive one, and you can’t pass through many local businesses without seeing examples of the painting, photography and other kids of talents in town. Craig writers are also prominently featured within the local bookstore and Colorado Northwestern Community College’s annual arts magazine.
Perhaps the best instance of Craig’s artistic side is the innumerable wooden statues that are featured across the local landscape. Collected from the yearly festival Whittle the Wood and crafted by carvers hailing from around the globe, these masterpieces lend a unique aesthetic to the town.
The tourists who fl ock to Craig City Park — which offers the greatest number of carvings — may as well be at The Louvre, spending plentiful time taking in renditions of nature scenes, Western nostalgia and many other kinds of creative expression inspired by Craig and its residents.
