What is Curriculum Night?

• Our goal for tonight is to familiarize you with the procedures, expectations, standards, and objectives for fifth grade students at Holly Springs ES STEM Academy.

• We will be able to answer some general questions, but individualized questions concerning your child will need to be addressed during a scheduled conference time or on the sheet in front of you.

Agendas• Students are expected to fill out their

agenda for each subject each day.• Students will copy down homework

and/or classwork.• It is important students have their

agenda each day during each class. • Parents: Please make sure you review

and sign your child’s agenda each night.

– Behavior marks can be found in the front of the agenda. – Transportation cards

Communication

• Each teacher has an account set up in Remind 101. – Please sign up if you haven’t done so

already. • Teachers will send out email blasts with

class happenings and helpful resources. – If we don’t have your email address,

please send it in.

– Be on the lookout for ASPEN Notifications or the individuals teacher’s name.

Behavior Management• Behavior Card is located in the front of the

agenda. – End of the quarter incentive time for

maintaining 80 or more points during the quarter.

• Students are expected to come into class prepared and ready to learn.

• They need to be focused and follow directions. • Hallways: They are expected to be quiet,

single file, and on the second tile.

Student Houses

The house with the most points earns a special reward at the end of each quarter.

Family Portal• We encourage you to sign up for family

portal if you haven’t already done so.• Family portal allows you to see your

child’s current grades in each class.• You can sign up for email updates that

let you know when your child gets a failing grade or has not turned in (NHI) an assignment.

Absences – Make Up Work

• Please make every effort to be here everyday.

• Please send a note or email following any absence.

• When your child is absent for less than 3 days, they can get their work when they return.

• If your child is out for more than 3 days, you can request to have their work collected.

• Students are responsible to get their make-up work.

Reading• This year is critical for being able to cite

evidence from reading passages.• Homework may be assigned if

classwork is incomplete otherwise they should be reading 30 minutes per night.

• Reading logs will begin after progress reports.

• Your child will participate in a small reading group several times a week.

Reading• Students will be participating in Storia

reading. They will get their passwords soon, and will be expected to read stories from this website.

• We go to the library every other week as a class.

• 3 genres - Opinion, informative/explanatory, & narrative

• A class blog, revising/editing, going global, research, summarizing/paraphrasing, writing process

Social Studies- US History

• We will begin with Bill of Rights and Civil War and work our way to present day.

• Students will have study guides for each chapter. – These will be located in their 3 prong

folder.• Textbooks will stay in class. Homework

will not require the use of the textbook.
