Ms. BartonI am part Hawaiian, and I live in Owings Mills, MD. My husband, Charles, and I have been married for 26 years and have 11 kids ( 7 girls and 4 boys), and one dog named Rocky. I am a HUGE Disney fan. My parents have a summer home in Florida on the Disney property so we visit Disney just about every summer. I have been teaching for 24 years. I have taught grades 3-6. This is my fourth year at Winfield and teaching with Baltimore County Public Schools. Prior to that I taught in Anne Arundel County and Carroll County.

I have a Bachelors in Elementary Education with a minor in Child Psychology and a Master’s in Administration and Supervision with Administrator 1 certification. I am also an adjunct professor with Grand Canyon University supervising prospective teachers and administrators. My email is dbarton2@bcps.org. Winfield Wednesday Folders

• Every Wednesday, there will be a folder sent home with tests, quizzes, and any work that your child completed that week so that you can be made aware of your child’s progress.

• The folder will also contain a weekly progress report that let’s you know about your child’s behavior and academic progress for the week. This needs to be signed and returned by Friday.

• This folder is to eliminate the amount of papers being sent home so that you and your child can be made aware of anything that is IMPORTANT.

Grading PolicyThe county mandates:

•100%-90% = A•80% - 89% = B•70% - 79% = C•60% – 69% = D•Below 60% = E

Grading PolicyReport card assignments will be out of

100 points and will have a combination of ungraded and graded

assignments and assessments. Each student will receive a progress

report throughout each marking period so you are aware of your

child’s progress.

HomeworkMonday - Thursday Evenings

Homework should be written in student’s agenda. Parents should initial/ sign agendas.

• Homework– e. As students advance through school, it is reasonable to expect that the amount of homework

can be increased. Recognizing the individual differences of students, teachers should collaborate in implementing an educationally sound approach to the following parameters of time and frequency of homework.

– Grades 4-5 • Time: An average of 60 minutes per day for all subjects combined, with the possibility of long-term

assignments which may occasionally require additional time.

• Frequency: Four-five times a week would be anticipated. No specific assignments will be given which must be completed over holidays.

• Please check to see that your child has completed his/her homework each night!

Homework• Homework will be checked for completion everyday.• However, if your child is unable to complete his/her homework

because of an emergency, please write a note so your child will be excused from the assignment.

• If a student misses school, there will be an “You will be Missed” folder on their desk all day. The work that is missed will be placed in that folder. Please check and make sure the work is completed. The work will be checked for completion not accuracy.

• If a student misses a quiz or test, that student will not need to make it up the day he/she comes back, rather the day after to ensure effective learning has occurred.

Brainfuse is a live online tutoring available from the Baltimore County Public Library’s home page under the Kids/Teens tab. A valid library card from the Baltimore County Public Library is required to access this service. This is a free service for all Students can chat live with a tutor from 2:00 to 11:55 p.m., seven days a week. Spanish-speaking tutors are available. During the hours that tutors are not available, students can submit questions through 24/7 Help. A response will be sent within 24 hours. ages, kindergarten through adult learners.

Attendance Policy

MSDE states that satisfactory attendance is 94%.

If your child is absent, all missed work will be sent home with them to be completed and brought back for a grade.

Please send in a note with your child to explain the absence.

If it is for more than three days please get a note from your child’s doctor.

BirthdaysStudents are more then welcome to celebrate their

birthdays here at school! However, according to NEW MSDE regulations and laws, there are to be

NO more store bought candy and cupcakes allowed to be shared with the students and staff.

Math Facts!

• It is extremely important in fourth grade to have memorized basic multiplication and division facts.

• This year they will be going in depth problem solving so basic facts are essential.

• Please set aside time a few days a week to practice basic facts with your child!

Reading/Writing

This year in Reading/Writing, your child will be reading all different types of genres (narrative, non-fiction, fantasy, informational narrative, narrative non-fiction etc.)

Each quarter, your child will be assessed on what reading level based on the Fountas and Pinnell Assessment system

Your student will have a reading and writing journal in they will be expected to complete daily journal entries

Throughout the year, your child will be accessing reading strategies such as inferencing, comparing, contrasting, and being able to identify the theme of a text as well as many others!
