FACTS• In India, a child goes missing every Eight minutes, according to data

from the National Crime Records Bureau.

• Kidnapping is by far the highest reported crime against children

which is for ransom, forcing into beggary, trafficking for illegal

transplantation of organs, for using as child laborer and for exporting

to other countries for prostitution.

• More than 22,000 of the 60,000 children reported missing in 2011 are

missing till date.

• Metropolitans and rural areas have the highest number of missing

children. These are just the cases reported.

• Maharashtra, Odisha, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Punjab

didn’t report much, which experts say is not credible.

• One of the main reasons for the high number of missing children is

that the law on missing children in India is inadequate, say experts.

• There is no legal definition of a missing child, and each state follows

its own rules, says the founder of a leading NGO.


CAUSE• When the child leaves home, parents are not sure if he/she has

reached school safely, till they reach back home after school hours.

• When children don’t reach school, school authority assumes that the

child might not have come to school for reasons like illness, being

late, etc.

• Most of the crimes against children happen during this commuting

period, that we term as “The Crime Window”.

• Due to the lack of communication between the guardians and the

school authority, an alarm is raised, at least half an hour later than

the time when the child generally reaches back home.

• If a child is reported lost in one state but has been trafficked to

another state, there is no mechanism to ensure that the child will be

searched countrywide on immediate effect.

• Sadly the fact, that more than One-third of the missing children fail to

ever being successfully traced back.

• Effect: Firstly, the school & guardians suffer insecurity. Secondly, legal
