• A student will have one day for every absence to make up class work/homework missed on the day(s) of their absence. We expect all work to be handed back in a timely manner.

• If an assignment is turned in late without an agreed upon extension, the student may lose credit on that assignment.

• Under most circumstances, if a student is absent and an assignment was given while the student was in school, the work is expected to be turned in on the first day the student returns to school. Parents can email us or write us a note if this is not possible.

• When possible and if given enough notice, teachers may provide homework to students going on vacation for longer than three days.

Grade 6 Reading

The mission of the Reading and Writing Project is to help young people become avid and skilled readers, writers, and inquirers.

It is our goal to lead your child toward becoming a life long reader, one who chooses ‘Just Right’ books and is able to discuss them in conversation and writing.

Reader’s workshop is a time in our classroom that provides students meaningful interaction with literature, writing, integrated content and word work. Reader’s Workshop offers unique opportunities for students to connect with texts on a deeper level, which encourages the development of higher level thinking skills.

Page 20: Welcome to Haddam-Killingworth Middle School Sixth Grade, Team 6-1! 2015 - 2016

Grade 6 Writing

In grade 6, students will write in a variety of genres, including: expository/ informational, narrative, argument writing, and poetry. Students will also be writing in response to texts.

The types of responses to texts will vary. They can be short, such as on a post-it, or they can be extended responses. Students will also learn to write essays in response to a single text or using multiple sources.

Homework Policy

Your child is expected to read at home and log at least 10 times for approximately 250 pages per week. Logs are collected on the first day of each week, and graded according to the rubric.

There will be times when students have Post-it requirements. Each time a new type of Post-it is assigned they will receive frames to set up their response.

Students are expected to bring an independent reading book to class each day. They also need their Reader’s/ Writer’s Notebook.

Organization and Study Skill TipsSixth grade is a time of transition and many students struggle with organization and time management.

• Make sure your child has a consistent place to deposit his or her book bag when coming home from school.

• Encourage your child to find a quiet place to do homework.

• Ask your child to show you his/her agenda planner.

• Make your child take responsibility for academic learning by asking how they plan to complete assignments. You might ask, “How long do you think this assignment will take?”

• Help your child plan homework completion around after school events and remind your child if there are evening plans for the family.

• Encourage your child to put homework in its proper place upon

completion.
