1. Bishop Lloyd’s Palace,51-53 Watergate RowTwo early C17th town housesreconstructed above medievalundercrofts. The western gable isdated 1615. There are ornateplaster ceilings and elaboratecarvings on the front gable. 2. Stanley Palace,Lower Watergate StreetTimber-framed house, datingfrom 1591. Interior has a longoak-beamed hall with a great oakstair leading to a gallery.Sat 10 - 10am to 4pm. At othertimes subject to occupation byother users. Ring the doorbell foradmission. No parking. Partialwheelchair access.

3. Watergate House,Lower Watergate StreetThis fine Grade II* listed buildingwas designed as a town house byThomas Harrison for his friendThomas Potts, Clerk of thePeace, in 1820.Sat 10 10am to 4pm. No parking.

4. Chester Health StoreBridge Street Row, EastThe current facade encases analtered C17th timber framedbuilding, galleried & open to aGeorgian roof. The over-rowchamber has remains of timberstudwork in the south wall.Commended by Chester CivicTrust 2015 for building renovation.Thurs 8 to Sat 10 - 9.30am to5.00pm, Sun 11 - 11am to 4pm.Free samples/tasting during openhours. 5. St. Peter’s Church,The CrossLocated at the heart of the city.Founded in AD907, & rebuilt inthe 14th century with lateralterations by Thomas Harrisonand John Douglas. Castle Galleries,18 St. Michael’s RowAn in-situ section of black andwhite Roman mosaic flooring canbe seen in the basement, whichonce decorated part of Deva’slarge bathhouse complex.Thurs 8 to Sat 10 - 9am to5.30pm, Sun 11 - 11am to 5pm.Public visiting to look at theRoman remains please notify amember of staff. 8. Chester History andHeritage, St. Michael’sChurch, Bridge StreetMedieval church rebuilt 1849-1851 by James Harrison.Features include 15th centurycarved oak chancel ceiling,andVictorian stained glass.Sat 10 - 11am to 4pm. Familyand local history service. Currentlocal history exhibitions. No

9. Funky AardvarkBridge Street Row EastChester’s oldest purpose built artgallery. The Sherratt familyextended the original form in 1889to create the amazing two storyhigh upper room to house thebeautiful Art of the Victorian Eraand compliment their antique andart business. They also added thestunning mock Tudor frontageand detailed sign.Thurs 8 to Sun 11 -10am to 5pm,No disabled access.

10. Mad Hatters TearoomSt. Michael’s Rectory,Bridge Street RowListed Grade II* building (C1650),originally the rectory of St.Michael’s Church, has many 17thcentury features including a frontwall, galleried great hall, mouldedceilings.Perfect for lunch or tea.Thurs 8 & Fri 9 - 10am to 4.30pm,Sat 10 and Sun 11 - 11am to4.30pm. Access to row level,disabled WC on this level.Galleried hall only viewable usingstairs, no lift. Some of front wallvisible from row level.

12. The Falcon,Grosvenor StreetBuilt in the C13th, purchased in1602 by Sir Richard Grosvenoras his town house, and in familyownership until the C20th. Thisbuilding once had a Row, whichwas enclosed in 1643. Clues toits existence are visible inside atthe first floor level. The Falconwas an inn from 1778 until 1878.Following repairs by JohnDouglas in 1879 it became atemperance cocoa house.Restored as a public house in the1980s.Thurs 8 to Sat 10 - 11am to11pm,Sun 11 - 12 noon to 10.30pm. 13. Grosvenor Museum,27 Grosvenor StreetDesigned by Thomas M.Lockwood & opened in 1886 tohold the collections of ChesterArchaeological Society, CharlesKingsley, & the Chester Societyof Natural Science, Literatureand Art. 15. Brewery Tapat Gamul House,52 Lower Bridge StreetThis pub was once a latemedieval town house. It has aspectacular great hall, refrontedwith brick in the C18th. The greathall has a C17th plaster ceilingand a massive carved sandstonefireplace. 16. Oddfellows,20 Lower Bridge StreetBuilt in 1676, Oddfellows (thenBridge House), marked a radicaldeparture from the half timberedtradition characterised by theBear & Billet (built only 12 yearsearlier). 17. St. Mary’s - A CreativeSpace, St. Mary’s HillFormerly the church of St. Mary-on-the-Hill. Commissioned C1350,partly to serve the growing needsof the garrison at Chester Castle,and restored by the Victorians.Several notable monuments.Display of photos by ChesterHistory and Heritage. 18. Cheshire Record Office,Duke StreetIn 1816 George Ormerod issuedthe first part of his ‘History ofCheshire’ - 200 years later thismajor work is still in use!Exhibition of original notes andpapers. 19. Bear and Billet,94 Lower Bridge StreetBuilt in 1664,the last majortimber-framed house to beconstructed in Chester. Ownedby the Earls of Shrewsbury (who

20. Three Kings TeaRooms, Lower Bridge St.Grade II listed building was theproperty of the Earls ofShrewsbury & dates from the midC17th. A stairwell timber hasrecently been dated as early asthe C12th. Throughout thepremises the timber frames androof trusses are exposed withmany of the panels retainingoriginal wattle and daub.Thurs 8 to Sun 11 - 10amto 5pm. Tearooms menu containsa more detailed history of thebuilding. Partial disabled access.

21.Greek Orthodox Churchof St. Barbara the GreatMartyr, Overleigh Road.The Eastern Orthodox ChristianChurch serving Cheshire & NorthWales. Grade II listed. Recentlyinstalled Iconostasis & Altar.Many fine icons.Sat 10 - 11am to 4pm, Sun 11

2pm to 4pm.Wheelchair access,refreshments available.OverleighRoad off the A483 entrance nextto Blackwell’s stonemasons.

22. Off the Wall, Base ofRoman Curtain Wall12 St. John StreetBuilt for Post Office Telephonesin 1908 & incorporating a sectionof the base & plinth of the RomanFortress wall. A plaque explainsits significance. When theexchange transferred in 1950 tothe neo-Georgian buildingopposite the Amphitheatre anadditional floor was added toconvert the building to a coffeeshop/bar. Next door (over thefence) are the remains of theRoman SE Angle Tower.Refreshments available.Thurs 8 to Sun 11, from11am to 10.30pm. Wheelchairaccess suitable for most users.

23. Wesley MethodistChurch, 8 St. John StreetBuilt in 1811 and designedby Thomas Harrison. Majoralterations in the 1920s and morerecently. Impressive stained glassand Binns organ. Active worshipand community centre with artexhibitions, installations andconcerts throughout the year.Thurs 8 to Sat 10 - 10am to 4pm.Wheelchair access. Toilets,coffee bar with fairtrade drinks,hot and cold snacks and cakes.Child friendly. Disabled parkingon street.

24. St. John the BaptistParish Church & ChapterHouse, Vicar’s LaneOne of the finest examples inEurope of the transition fromRomanesque to GothicArchitecture. Founded in AD689by Æthelred King of Mercia it isthe oldest Norman building in thecity. St. John’s was the CathedralCollegiate Church of the city from1075 until 1541. It has the largestcollection of Saxon/Viking crossesin the UK and a collection ofRandle Holme heraldic paintings.Open Thurs 8 to Sun 11, 10am to5pm. The Chapter House is openfrom10am to 12noon and in theafternoons, subject to staffing.Guided tours will be available.Wheelchair access & toilets.No parking.

25. Welsh PresbyterianChurch, St John StreetThis year is the 150th anniversaryof the church, designed by W & GAudsley of Liverpool, built in 1866of brick with an elaborate stonefront in a C13th French Gothicstyle. “Tracker” organ (1902) byAlexander Young, still in excellentworking condition. Either side ofthe organ are two stained glasswindows rescued from the WelshAnglican Church. In 1990 thebuilding was renovated and thegallery turned into a vestrycomprising a small theatre/meeting room and kitchen.Preview of bi-lingual display onhistory of church.Thurs 8 & Fri 9 10am to 2pm.Tea coffee & Welsh cake on sale.Side door & lift for disabledaccess.

26. Miss Selfridge,Roman Hypocaust,14 - 16 Northgate StreetAt the rear of the store is anin-situ Roman hypocaust,which may have been part of theheating system for the LegionaryCommander’s quarters.Thurs 8, Fri 9 & Sat 10 - 9.30amto 12 noon, then from 4pm to5pm. Chester Town HallNorthgate StreetAn imposing Victorian civicbuilding in the Gothic style whichdominates Chester’s main square.Designed by Lynn of Belfast, itwas inspired by the medievalCloth Hall at Ypres, Belgium.Thursday 8 - 10am to 4pm. 28. Commercial Hotel,St. Peter’s ChurchyardOff Northgate StreetThis early C19th inn by ThomasHarrison won a Civic Trust awardfor its recent refurbishment. Enjoylunch in an historic setting.

29. The Blue Bell,Northgate StreetGrade 1 listed originally twohouses built sometime between1250 & 1400, joined together inthe C.18th - possibly the oldestsurviving medieval house inChester - granted a licence toserve ale in 1494, now arestaurant. Timber framed, withbraced king-post roof, on asandstone plinth. At ground levelis an arcade open to the streetwith a separate chamber erectedin 1684 ‘without consent’ for abarber’s shop, & also used as astage-coach ticket office C.18th.Thurs 8 to Sun 11th 12 noon to11pm. 30. Chester Cathedral,Abbey SquareChester Cathedral has a historyspanning almost two thousandyears. 31. King Charles Tower,City WallsDiscover this medieval tower,once used as a meeting place forthe Chester Guilds. Stand whereKing Charles I was said to havewatched the skirmishes at theBattle of Rowton Moor.Sat 10 & Sunday 11 - 10am to

32. Water Tower andBonewaldesthorne’sTowerJohn de Helpston built the WaterTower for £100, between 1322and 1325 as a defence on theDee at Chester. The originalcontract between him and the citysays Bonewaldesthorne’s Tower(turrus de Benewaldestham),through which the Water Tower isreached, was already in existence.The original Anglo Saxon Towerwas made of timber, and the laterstone tower dates to the C13th.Steep steps in building. Explorethis unique building and the new‘Sick to Death’ history of medicineexhibit housed within it. 33. Telford’s Warehouse,Canal WharfSubstantial brick warehouse builtin the 1790s and attributed to thefamous engineer Thomas Telford.Restored in the 1980s now usedas a bar, restaurant and music/arts venue. Superb views acrossChester’s former canal port.Constructed partly over the canal

34. University of ChesterChapelThe chapel was built between1844 and 1847. 36. Queen’s SchoolCity Walls RoadIndependent day school for girlsest. 1878, built on the site of theold city jail. Exterior richly detailedin the vernacular revival style,with mullioned windows, shapedchimneys and an ornate steepledbelfry. Visit inside the originalschool building, not usually opento the public.Sat 10 - 10.30am to 1.30pm.Wheelchair access and toilets.No parking.

37. St. Oswald’s Church,Backford (CH2 4BE)Grade II* listed dating from C13thwith restorations. Contains areredos by John Douglas.Sat 10 - 10am to 4pm. Disabledaccess & toilets. Drive north outof Chester on A41 turn right intoChurch Lane at sign for BackfordVillage.

38. St. Werburgh RomanCatholic Church,Grosvenor Park RoadCompleted in 1875. This citycentre church is a fine exampleby Edmund Kirby in the style ofC13th early English architecture.The church was refurbished in2002. Stained glass windows.Acclaimed 3 manual Binns/Sixsmith organ installed in 2004.Thurs 8 to Sat 10 - 10am to 4pm,Sun 11 - 8.30am to 7pm. Mass

Christ Church,Gloucester Street,NewtownCompleted in1900, by localarchitect John Douglas in Artsand Crafts style with ‘OxfordMovement’ interior, Kempewindows, a Brindley and Fosterorgan, and fascinating furnitureand artefacts.Thurs 8, Fri 9 and Sat 10 -10amto 4pm. 40. Farndon Parish ChurchChurch Lane, FarndonRebuilt in 1658, the churchfeatures a Civil War window thatdetails types of weapons andclothing used by the Cheshiregentry in the service of theRoyalist cause.Thurs 8 to Sun 11 - 10am to 4pm. Full wheelchair access & toilets.Light refreshments on Saturday.Public parking in centre of villageand at nearby Memorial Hall.From Chester, turn left in villagecentre then first right to Church.

41. Stretton Watermill,Near FarndonHistoric working watermill sitedating from1351. The presentbuilding dates from 1630, withalterations in 1770 and 1819.A rare survival of a rural mill withoriginal machinery still in use.Milling process is demonstratedwith two waterwheels, sluices,hoist & sifter. Free guided toursin the afternoons to see theancient machinery.Sat 10 and Sun 11 - 1pmto 5pm. Last tour 4.30pm. Tenmiles south of Chester, off A534between Farndon and Broxtonroundabout. 42. Walk Mill, WavertonA working flour mill, Walk Millwas mentioned in the DomesdayBook, but was demolished in1965. Recently rebuilt it is nowopen to the public. The mill hasa cafe and shop with products

baked on the premises usingstone ground flour made fromwheat grown in fields around themill. The mill is powered by theRiver Gowy. St. Andrew’s Church,Church Street, TarvinGrade I listed C14th parishchurch, of particular interest:C14th oak screen, C14th roof tosouth aisle and C17th roof tonave, rebuilt following the CivilWar. Victorian stained glass byKempe and Bryans. Modernstained glass in west window.History exhibition with remainsof Saxon cross.Sat 10 - 10am to 4pm. In centreof village. Grade II listed ParishTearoom with local art exhibition,once the C17th Tarvin GrammarSchool. Simple refreshments,church guide booklets and trailleaflets are available. Wheelchairaccess. 44. St. Edith’s Church,Shocklach, MalpasThis tiny parish church is just inCheshire. Continuing worshipand welcome assured at thistreasured church dedicated to St.Edith. Hisportrait hangs in the LordMayor’s Parlour at the TownHall. The Georgian facade wassimilar to No 1 - with aprojecting first floor. Manyoriginal Jacobean featuresremain,wattle & daub infilling,oak trusses, and what isbelieved to be the oldest bricksmoke hood in the city. Animportant feature of the buildingis the heraldic over-mantel,displaying the arms of theWorshipful Company ofBrewers, a London Liverycompany. complement Heritage Open Days. The programmeincludes some walks and talks similar to the ‘Events’section of Heritage Open Days but, in addition, we

have tried to introduce a variety of differentopportunities, from Lego house-building to

traditional pub games.

Many of the events have a limited capacity and needto be booked in advance via Chester History & Heritage

Heritage Quiz and Film Night have a charge.In some other cases a donation to the organising group
