Dear Parishioners: Shortly after Jesus’ ascension into heaven the apostles knew that they must continue the mission. But Jesus didn’t lay out a complete itinerary of what should occur. So, the apostles did what was natural. They prayed together and broke bread. These gatherings were the beginnings of the Mass. Probably within a few years the cycle of gathering on “The Lord’s Day” or Sunday to remember the resurrection of Jesus became set. Throughout the centuries Sunday has been held as the highest or most important day of the week for Christians. But when Monday comes, life goes back to work, school, chores, and daily living. It was thought that there should be some rituals that guide us through the week and not rely only on Sunday worship to sustain us. Early Church leaders might gather with people in their homes for prayer and worship. If it were a Friday, the day of Jesus’ crucifixion it would be a day of fasting. Wednesday often was too as it was a reminder of the day when Judas betrayed the Lord. Yet there weren’t any set rituals associated with each day, at least not initially. When the Roman Empire became Christian and churches could be built, daily rituals began to form. It was common to gather for prayer at the beginning of the day, noon, and evening. This became even more elaborate as monasteries formed under the guidance of St. Benedict. The practice of saying the psalms, singing hymns, reading scripture, and receiving instruction on it at these times evolved into the Divine Office. It became the norm and duty of those consecrated to religious life to gather for prayer and say the Office. Diocesan clergy often could not gather for all the hours of the day, so they would have an abbreviated form they would say which then became known as the Breviary. But what about lay Christians? What kind of prayer would guide their lives? Throughout the early Middle Ages, it was common for the laity who were near a monastery or church to stop their work and participate with the monks when they heard the bells ringing calling them to prayer. If they were not near a church, but could hear the bells in the distance they would stop their labors at that hour and say a prayer. The practice of gathering for daily Mass had something of the same evolution. In the first 300 years it was not common. After that it was often done by the priests and religious in the cities. Later the monasteries developed elaborate rituals and pageants surrounding the memory of the saints and events from the life of Christ. Lay people could participate in these rituals too. Through the centuries the addition to the church calendar of remembrances of saints added solemnity to the daily Mass. In time many people were not educated to read. However, even if they could read in their local language they didn’t know Latin, the language used in prayer and worship. So it was common to take time each day to pray 150 Our Fathers as a replacement for the 150 psalms. Later the Hail Mary was substituted for the Our Father and recollections of events from the life of Christ were included. This was the beginning of the rosary whose devotion was spread by St. Dominic in the 13th century. A practice that dates back to our Jewish ancestors is the praying before meals in thanksgiving to God. Christians adopted this practice, and many continue to thank God each time a meal is eaten. The Jewish Seder has an elaborate ritual of blessing over the bread and wine and other elements. The Eucharistic Prayer at Mass is really an elaborate prayer of remembrance and thanksgiving to God. Taking time each day for prayer is laudable. If you can attend Mass during the week you will grow in your appreciation for the scriptures. Praying the scriptures or the rosary at home can keep you in touch with the mysteries of our salvation. Prayer before meals, even at restaurants, can remind you that all things belong to God and He is so gracious to share His bounty with us each day. Peace, Fr. Chris Question to ponder: What do you find most interesting about the description of the heavenly Jerusalem?

ARE YOU BORED? LOOKING TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS?

How about volunteering for one of the following ministries: BINGO– Thursday evenings starting at 3:30pm–9:45. Work the kitchen or floor. For information call Chiquita at 788-6144, Joan at 756-7970 or Lucy at 322-8037. CHOIR- We would like to extend a warm welcome to all our members and all new members who would like to be a part of our music ministry here at Our Lady of Hope. Please come and join us. The choirs sing each weekend for the Sunday Masses (9am & 11am). If you are interested in singing at these Masses, please join us in the choir room a half hour prior to

Mass. If you don’t know where the Choir room is please see an usher and they will direct you. EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMMUNION An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion serves God’s people by distributing the Body and Blood of Christ within the community. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are selected with prayerful consideration of the needs of the community and qualification of the individual. Preparation for this ministry includes Diocesan instruction through the Office of Liturgy, parish instruction, and commissioning in the Parish. All ministers must be commissioned through the Diocese of Orlando. Please contact Patsy Pardon at 788-2934. FUNERAL MINISTRY- The funeral liturgy is the central liturgical celebration of the Christian community for the deceased. When one of its members dies, the Church encourages the celebration of the funeral liturgy at a Mass. Funeral Masses may be scheduled with the decedent in a casket or with cremated remains once the remains are available. “Memorial Masses” are not permitted in the Diocese of Orlando, (this means the absence of a body or cremains). There is a brochure available in the church which speaks about the Church’s teachings on cremation. At the funeral liturgy, the Church gathers with the family and friends of the deceased to give praise and thanks to God for Christ's victory over sin and death, to commend the deceased to God's tender mercy and compassion, and to seek strength in the proclamation of the Paschal Mystery. The funeral liturgy, therefore, is an act of worship, and not merely an expression of grief. The funeral liturgy is a time for the family and the friends of a decedent to come together and celebrate the person’s life. Please contact Daniel Weimer at 386-788-6144 or 386-299-4490 or email: [email protected] LAWRENCE WHELAN MEMORIAL LIBRARY-Our Parish Library is located at the end of the education wing of the Parish Center (room 2). They provide good order in the church. They are the "door keepers to the house of God." Some duties include arranging collections and organizing distribution of communion. Funeral Notification and Planning

The death of a loved one is always painful, yet requires timely decisions for scheduling funeral rites. Contacting the funeral home/cremation provider of your choice is the first response following the death of a loved one. The funeral home or family member (for those who choose to use a direct cremation service/ society) should then contact, Dan Weimer, the Funeral Coordinator at Our Lady of Hope at (386) 299-4490. Dan will assist with scheduling a Mass or Service, and arrange an appointment with the family to plan the Funeral Mass/Service. Funeral Masses may be scheduled with the decedent in a casket or with cremated remains once the remains are available. Funeral Masses are scheduled and celebrated at Our Lady of Hope at the 8:30 a.m. Mass Monday

through Friday. Memorial Masses are not permitted in the Diocese of Orlando (this means the absence of a body or cremains). A date for a Funeral Mass/Service cannot be scheduled without the funeral home or family member contacting Dan. This policy is in place to avoid scheduling conflicts and assure the availability of the church and a priest. A new pamphlet explaining funerals with cremation is available in the pamphlet racks at the entrance of the church.

Bereavement Ministry (Comfort and Care)

SEASONS OF HOPE - A six week program, rooted in Catholic tradition, conveys God’s consolation through scripture, prayer, reflection and sharing our faith. Each year many families face the loss of loved ones. Seasons of Hope offers the bereaved an opportunity to come together to share with others and can give a voice to your unique journey of grief, finding healing and hope. For more information regarding our session, or if you would like to speak confidentially, please contact Pam Flesch at 386-788-1316.

MOVING ON– This ministry began two years ago and now has approximately 20 attendees each month. Based on the curriculum and articles that Maryann has written, the gatherings involve scripture, prayer, and sharing the everyday adjustments following the death of a loved one. The goal of MOVING ON after sadness and replacing joy in our lives is the highlight of our meetings. Moving On meets from 10 to 12 in the Parish Center (Rooms 6-8) on the last Wednesday of each month. (Note: There will be no June Meeting). If you need additional information, please call Maryann Curran at 386-756-2685.

Mission Statement: “Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church is a worshipping and welcoming parish community serving the Kingdom of God. We celebrate and live our faith in Jesus Christ through the Sacraments, and

by our words and actions.”

SPIRITUAL SHAPE UP Happy Easter! Welcome to the Easter Season—the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost. During this season, we will focus on prayer and the many special feasts that occur during this Season. During this season, I hope you can enter into the joy of the Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost.

EASTER WEEK 6: MEMORIAL DAY This weekend is a time where we remember all of the members of our military who gave up their lives for our freedom. This is a special time to remember those who like Jesus laid down their lives for others. As we remember them, let us take some time this week to pray for our country. There are many great things about our country. What are the things that you are most grateful for? Thank God for those. There are also things going in on in our country that threaten to split it up and divide us. Pray for unity and healing. Ask God to help us and to send His Spirit upon our leaders so that they can do what is best for all. This week pray for our country.

Want to go deeper This week pick your favorite patriotic song: Star Spangled Banner, God Bless America, America the Beautiful, My Country tis of Thee, Proud to be an American, Living in America, Born in the USA, etc. Listen to the song, look up the lyrics and reflect on what it says about our country and our relationship with God. How does this fit with your feelings about the country today? Do you think the writer would say the same things today? Take this to prayer.

YOU are WELCOME. YOU’VE been MISSED. YOU are LOVED.

If you are Catholic, away from the Church, and would like to come home, please join us on Tuesday, May 28 at 7pm to 8:30pm.

Session #4—Walk Through the Mass—Exploring Our Sacred Liturgy Please come to the Parish Center, Use North Entrance door, Rooms 6 & 8.

Questions? Please call – Jasmine Woodward @ 386.788.6144

Hear about the changes while you were away.

And what does the Mass really mean?

Why confession? What is sin?

What do Catholics believe and why?
