Types of Qualifications

GCSE

BTEC

V CERT

CoPE

GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education)

Usually a mix of theoretical study and investigative work

Some subjects have large practical elements

Some subjects have a combination of written examinations and project work

Examinations take place at the end of the course in Year 11

• Broadly the same proportion of students

will achieve a grade 4 and above as

currently achieve a grade C and above

• Broadly the same proportion of students

• For each examination, the top 20 per cent

of those who get grade 7 or above will get a

grade 9 – the very highest performers

They are rewarded for their efforts as the course progresses

60% continuous assessment

40% of the course assessed by controlled assessment

Good preparation for other vocational courses in further education/apprenticeship at level 3

CoPE

Certificate of Personal Effectiveness

Students complete a range of practical, life enhancing and work related challenges

Students are assessed by creating a portfolio of evidence as they complete various challenges

English Baccalaureate

Achieved if a student achieves “a good pass” (5) or above in:

English Language and Literature (combined or separate)

Mathematics

At least two Sciences (or double certificate) Computing can count as one of the science GCSEs

One modern language

History or Geography
