Lexile Scores
• A Lexile text measure is based on two strong predictors of how difficult a text is to comprehend: word frequency and sentence length.
• Once students have mastered all 4 Kindergarten sight word lists, they will take the STAR Reading test independently and begin the Accelerated Reader Program (AR).

• By the end of the year kindergarteners are expected to be able to independently write 3-5 sentences on a specific topic
• They should understand and use– Correct capitalization– Punctuation– Finger spacing between words– Phonetically sounded out words

How will my child’s progress be assessed?
• Phonics Inventory– Consonant sounds– Short vowel sounds in CVC words– Beginning consonant blends (fl, gl, cl, br, etc.)
• Yopp Singer– Measures a child’s ability to separately articulate the
sounds of a spoken word in order– Provides information on which students have phonemic
awareness
• Sight Word Inventory– Students must learn all 5 Kindergarten sight word lists

How will my child’s progress be assessed?
• GKIDS (Georgia Inventory of Developing Skills)• Newton County Kindergarten report cards are
issued four times during the school year at the end of each nine week period.
• Teacher observation and checklists are also used as a means of assessment.
• Results of the various assessments are shared with parents at the scheduled conferences or at any other time when the parent or teacher requests a conference.

Homework:• Students will have homework every
night, Monday through Thursday. Monthly homework calendars will be sent home.
• Please make sure you are sending in written homework
• If there is no written homework, please make sure you are initialing the homework calendar.

your child each day or check the monthly snack calendar.

Procedures
Friday Folders:• These are the green folders that will go
home every Friday. Important school notes and forms will go home this way, as well as work samples that your child has done throughout the week. There will often be things that you will need to sign and return, so make sure that you check it every Friday. The Kindergarten newsletter will go home in the Friday Folders if you are not receiving it through e-mail.

Procedures
Sending Money to School:• ALL money sent to school should be in a
zippered pouch or envelope and accompanied by a note that says what the money is for. If your student’s daily folder has a zippered pouch in it, that would be a great place to put the money! Make sure that you send a note with specifics as well though, because children can sometimes get messages mixed up!

Dress Code:• Dress code is not as strictly enforced in
the younger grades as it is in the upper grades, but we still must follow school policies! The most commonly broken rules are NO FLIP FLOPS, and shirt straps should be AT LEAST THREE FINGERS WIDE. The entire dress code for South Salem can be found in the agenda.

Transportation:• Students must be here by 7:30 to eat
breakfast• Students arriving after 7:40 MUST be
checked in by a parent• No one can be checked out after 1:30• Car riders need to be picked up by 2:30• All transportation changes must be in
writing

Field Trips• We hope to have 2-3 field trips this year.• Parents who would like to come will
have to pay and must drive separate. Please do not bring younger siblings.
• Our first field trip will be to Southern Belle Farm on October 1st. Be on the look out for more information coming home soon.

Communication
We have many ways for you to communicate with your child’s teacher!
1. Email! This is the quickest and easiest way to communicate with your teacher. Please leave us your e-mail address before you leave tonight.
2. Daily folders/agendas. Every day your child will take home a folder. Please check this folder daily for behavior chart and any notes.
3. Friday Folders. This folder will go home every Friday and contains important papers from the school as well as your child’s class work from the week. Please empty this folder and return it on Monday.

Safety • South Salem is very serious about your
child’s safety.• The children will have many opportunities
to practice our safety procedures for the following: fire drill, tornado drill, and intruder alert.
• Please understand that due to safety precautions, we ask all visitors to check in at the front office.

How can I help my child be successful?
• Read to your child every day and allow them to tell you what happened or what they think will happen in the story.
• Study sight words nightly.• Provide an area in your home that encourages learning
and exploration. Stock the area with crayons, pencils, pens, scissors, paper, glue, puzzles, flash cards, books, etc.
• Write every day!• Establish a homework routine with your child.• Talk to, play with, and have fun with your child!• Most importantly, hug them, hold them, and let
them know how truly special they are!
