    Welcome To Kindergarten at Ridgeway

    What can I do to prepare my child?

    •  Provide opportunities for your child to play and interact with other children

    •  Read to your child and talk about the books together.

    •  Can attend a Strong start program with your child if there is one in your

    neighbourhood.

    •  Here are some suggested activities

    i.  Have your child practice printing his/her first name using lower case letters.

    ii.  Sing the alphabet song together.

    iii.  Read and enjoy books together.

    iv.  Read and recite nursery rhymes with your child.

    v.  Give your child opportunities to use pencils, crayons and scissors.

    vi.  Count and group objects such as buttons, bread tags, etc…

    vii.  Play simple board games together

    viii. 

    Look for and name shapes in the environment.ix.  Have your child assume small responsibilities to help build independence.

    •  If your child is able to do the following he/she will find it easier to adapt to the

    routines and rhythms of full day kindergarten.

    i.  Completely toilet trained

    ii.   No longer requires a nap in the afternoon

    iii.  Eats independently at meal time

    iv.  Able to take off and put on jackets and shoes, independently.

    v.  Is familiar with spending full days away from his/her parents

    •  If your child is able to self-regulate his/her emotion and attention he/she will find it

    easier in a full day kindergarteni.  Is able to communicate needs, wants and thoughts orally

    ii.  Sustains attention; is able to sit and listen for 15 minutesiii.  Is able to remember and carry out two or three directions

    iv.  Is able to follow rules and willing to take turns

    v.  Is able to get along with most children and adults and respects other’s

     property and rights

    vi.  Is able to work alone and with others
