Ready, Set, Go! Five tips to help your child prepare for kindergarten
Let your child solve a simple problem, such as assembling a toy or putting together a puzzle. If you see your child struggling a bit, pause before you help and give your child a moment to work on a solution.
Talk with your child about going to kindergarten, and write down some of your child’s ideas. Then ask your child to draw a picture of what kindergarten will be like.
Create a story together. Start a story, then pause at a pivotal point in the tale to let your child jump in.
Read aloud with your child every day. Your reading time doesn’t have to be long—5-10 minutes each day will make this a regular activity.
Sing a phone number or address song. Take a song your child knows well, and change the lyrics to your phone number and address.
Play “store.” Put price tags for 20 cents or less on toys and let your child use pennies, nickels, and dimes to pay for them.
Look for shapes together by playing “I Spy.” You might say, “I spy a blue square. Can you find it?” Once your child finds the shape, your child can ask you to find the next item.
1 Develop a child’s spirit of independence.
Work on those fine motor skills.2
Make playing with others a priority.
3
Practice simple self-care habits.
4
Be their first teacher.
5
Our kindergarten teachers welcome young learners to school each fall and share with parents the belief that every child can flourish. Here are their five tips, along with some fun activities, that can help make the kindergarten transition a success.

Learning & GrowingOur kindergarten classrooms are active places where students explore, discover, learn, and grow.
Teachers use many models of learning to promote language learning, motor development, and problem-solving. Experiences include:
Reading and Writing Reading and writing instruction develops students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. They develop literacy concepts such as letter identification, recognizing concepts about print, recognizing sound/symbol relationships, and various reading skills. Teachers and students read both fiction and nonfiction stories. Children develop phonics skills including letter/sound relationships, beginning and ending sounds in words, and spelling.
Math Children in kindergarten experience math as they interact with other children in learning centers and at computers, and as they think about and explore their world. The math curriculum includes both formal and informal learning opportunities that engage children in counting, sorting, comparing, constructing, and problem-solving. Children continue to develop a math vocabulary and make connections between formal learning experiences and everyday life.
Science Kindergarten science teaches children to sort, observe, question, and experiment. They sequence ideas and develop theories on how things work. They predict and classify. Science is a great way to further the connections between home and school.
Social Studies Social studies in kindergarten focuses on self. Children learn about feelings in the “All About Me” unit of study. They begin to identify likenesses among people and recognize social rules, especially on the playground and in the classroom. Children explore ideas about families and different cultures through group study and involvement in activities.
The West Des Moines Community Schools’ kindergarten curriculum is aligned with the state-required Iowa Core curriculum.

On any day, your child will explore activities involving science, books, art, drawing, writing, workbenches, blocks, and computers. Self-directed learning centers are carefully designed to appeal to children, as well as encourage creative and critical thinking. Teachers work with students individually and in small and large groups.

How Do I Register My Child for Kindergarten?
Steps 1-5 are required to hold a spot for your child on next year’s kindergarten class list. Please submit all information to District Registrar Joy Zuber at the Learning Resource Center, 3550 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines.
Enrollment Requirement
7
Students are assigned to a school based on the student’s home address and available space. If you are not sure which school’s attendance area you live in, or if you want to check your child’s placement, please call District Registrar Joy Zuber at 515-633-5101.
Our kindergarten classrooms are limited to 26 students per class. Because of this, some of our buildings do get full. By getting your child’s name placed on a kindergarten list early, you will hold a spot for the 2019-20 school year.
Any student placed on our list after a building is full will be assigned—or “capped out”—to another elementary building in our district. Students who are capped out receive free transportation.
Parents are welcome to request a voluntary transfer application, but we cannot guarantee placement at a requested school. We will not know if there are openings at requested schools until early August.
Schools enroll students who live within their boundary areas and any capped-out students from other buildings before placing students who voluntarily come from a different district or school.
School Placement—Quick Reference
Cap Out: A capped-out student lives in one school attendance area in the West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) but is assigned to another elementary building in our district because the kindergarten classrooms are full at the original school. Capped-out students receive free transportation.
Voluntary Transfer: A voluntary-transfer student lives in one school attendance area in the WDMCS but requests to attend a school in another WDMCS attendance area. Families agree to limited transportation options from the district when students are approved for a voluntary transfer.
Open Enrollment: An open-enrolled student lives in one district but requests to attend another. Families agree to limited transportation options from the district when students are approved for open enrollment. Open enrollment acceptance is based on available space and subject to requirements set by state law. Open-enrolled students receive school assignments in the summer.
If you have questions about cap outs, voluntary transfers, or open enrollment, please call District Registrar Joy Zuber at 515-633-5101.

Making the First Day Great!
Prepare your child—and your entire family—for the first day of school by starting your school-year routine early.
• Practice walking to school or to the bus stop. • Start your child’s bedtime and morning routine and schedule a few days before
the start of school. • Get your child’s supplies, backpack, jacket, and any other materials ready a day
or two in advance. • The day before school, let your child pick out what to wear on the first day of
school. Make sure the clothes are comfortable. • Try to get your child and your family off to bed a bit early so you are well-rested
in the morning.• Be positive! Both you and your child may be a little nervous on their first day.
Your attitude can help set a positive tone. • Say cheese! If you like, consider taking the traditional first-day-of-school photo
to capture this special moment.
At the end of the day, talk with your child about how the day went. Here are a few questions to help start your conversation:
• What did you do in school today that you really liked? • Did you meet a new friend? Tell me about your new friend. • What do you like best about your teacher or about one of your
friends in your classroom? • What are you most looking forward to doing tomorrow?
Before the First Day of School—Tips
Kindergarten Early ReleaseTo help with your child’s transition to all-day kindergarten, our schools dismiss kindergarten classes early each day during the first two weeks of school. During the afternoon, kindergarten teachers schedule time to visit with families to get to know their students and how they can best help them at school.
The schedule will return to the regular dismissal time after the first few weeks. Regular dismissal time on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday is 3:55 p.m. (3:10 p.m. for Crestview). All students are dismissed early on Wednesday throughout the year to provide teachers time to collaborate and receive professional development.

Nutritious & Delicious MealsThe West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) serves delicious, nutritious breakfasts and lunches at every school.
Signing up for school lunch is an easy, convenient way to give your child a well-balanced and healthy meal during the school day. You can also give them a great start to the day by signing up for our breakfasts.
To learn more about our nutrition services—including menus, how to track what your child is eating, and how to set up a meal account—visit www.wdmcs.org/departments/nutrition or call 515-633-5088.
Safe, Convenient TransportationThe West Des Moines Community Schools provides special transportation services to kindergarten students who live more than a half-mile from their assigned school.
We pick up these kindergartners at their homes, unless the bus cannot safely drive there. These kindergarten stops last only for the student’s first year of school. If your kindergartner has siblings, they may use this stop as well, but all other students are required to use their regular bus stop.
To learn more about our transportation services or to register for transportation, please visit www.wdmcs.org/ departments/transportation or call 515-633-4902.
Before- and After-School Child Care—Kids West Kids West provides safe, affordable, and convenient before- and after-school care for children in grades K-6 in the West Des Moines Community Schools. Kids West offers a variety of fun and enriching activities each day. Kids can play, relax, create crafts, learn new games, and make friends of all ages.
Any child attending grades K-6 in the WDMCS is eligible to attend Kids West. Kids West is open each day school is in session, Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. until school starts and after school until 6 p.m.
Child care is available for participants during teacher in-service days, parent-teacher conference days, selected days during winter break, and each day of spring break. Kids West Summer Day Camp is offered during the summer months to all children who have completed grades K-6. Enrollment is limited at each site due to staff-student ratios and space availability.
Registration for Kids West begins in March of the preceding school year and needs to be completed in person at the WDMCS Community Education office located at 3550 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines. Please contact the Kids West office at [email protected] or call 515-633-5018 if you have any questions.
For more information on the Kids West program, please visit our website at www.wdmcs.org/commed/programs/youth/kids-west.
Volunteering, ConnectingWe know you have given lots of love, time, and effort to your child during their beginning years. That’s why we want to make your child’s introduction to school a happy and exciting one.
Each school has an active and involved parent and family organization that sponsors a variety of events and activities. Parents and family members volunteer throughout the school and support school activities.
Parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year to keep you informed on how your child is progressing and what’s going on at school. Your child’s teacher is just a phone call or email away to answer any of your questions. We will keep you aware of how your child is doing at school.
Please contact your school for more information.
