WELCOME TO BISHOP BURTON COLLEGE – THE HOME OF SPORT.

Sport at all levels is at the heart of life at Bishop Burton. Whether it is competing at elite-level, taking part in team activities for recreational fun or simply maintaining a general level of fitness, we understand the importance of sport.

We know its value in not only improving physical and mental wellbeing, but also in developing teamwork and leadership skills that could be crucial in later life, as well as making new friends.

It is also a growing industry, with an increasingly wide variety of exciting career opportunities for those who choose to study sport. The college runs courses that provide routes into all types of employment in the sector and our academies are also a platform for those who aspire to play professionally.

We run numerous teams across different sporting disciplines, some of which compete at the highest level possible in the UK. The college also has outstanding links with professional teams, employers, national governing bodies and regional sports development.

P4-5: Outstanding Facilities (DONE)

These facilities, including high-quality pitches and changing rooms, have helped attract professional sports clubs to base their own academies at the college, including Hull City, Hull FC and Hull KR.

The college also boasts its own commercial gym on-site, including the latest cardiovascular and weights equipment, along with a large sports hall for sports including volleyball, basketball, and five-a-side football.

OUTSTANDING FACILITIES

Bishop Burton College has state-of-the-art sports facilities that are unrivalled in the region.

Facilities at the college include;

UNRIVALLED PARTNERSHIPSBishop Burton College is proud to work in partnership with some of the biggest names across a wide variety of sports. These partnerships provide opportunities for students to further develop their skills and knowledge, as well as play sport professionally.

HULL CITY

Bishop Burton College is the home of Hull City’s Academy. This is linked to the college’s own Football Academy, providing students with the possibility of securing a place with the club.

LINCOLN CITY

The college’s Riseholme Showground Campus, in Lincolnshire, is the home of Lincoln City’s academy.

HULL RUFC

The college’s partnership with Hull RUFC helps develop talented young rugby union players across the region.

PENTATHLON GB

Bishop Burton is the home of the Regional Performance Academy for the North of England and community outreach partners.

RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION (RFU)

Bishop Burton works with the RFU to support and grow the game and is one of just six Centres of Excellence for Women’s Rugby in the country.

LEEDS RHINOS NETBALL

CITY OF HULL ACADEMY

The college is the home of the City of Hull Academy, the partnership combining the academies of the two Super League clubs, Hull FC and Hull KR.

Bishop Burton is an official RFU education partner with Yorkshire Carnegie Rugby Club, providing opportunities for students to progress through its Achieving Academic and Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme.

SPORTS ACADEMIESBishop Burton College’s highly successful academies allow talented athletes to access top-class coaching and training.

All our professional coaches have elite-level sport experience, and applicants to academy programmes must demonstrate a level of achievement, or potential, at regional or national-level in their chosen sport.

The aim is to provide students with the best possible environment to achieve their sporting ambitions and our academies are some of the top performing in the country.

Academy players receive technical and tactical field sessions, strength and conditioning, video analysis, team meetings and various additional sessions, to improve their knowledge and performance.

Students on any course can apply for a place with one of the sports academies. During the course application process, prospective academy players have the opportunity to indicate their interest in joining one of the academies. A member of the relevant coaching team will be in touch once the application has been submitted.

STUDENT SUCCESSLevi Tarbotton plays centre back for the college’s Elite Academy, competing in the English Colleges Football Association (ECFA) Premier Division.

He has also been selected to represent England Colleges’ national team, making his debut at St George’s Park against the FA Independent Schools team.

The Elite Academy is in the English Colleges Football Association (ECFA) Premier Division, which is the highest standard of college football in the country. Elite Academy players will have had regional or county honours, academy experience or will be playing at a high standard of youth or adult football.

The Development Academy plays in the England Colleges Category 2 Yorkshire and Humber League. Players for the Development Academy are expected to have played at a good standard at youth level and may have been involved in representative sport.

The Senior Academy plays in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Tier 2 League. Players will have been playing at a high level of football – equivalent to the college’s own Elite Academy.

James Bennett is the college’s Higher Education Football Coach and Football Development Officer. He is a UEFA B qualified football coach and a former professional footballer with Hull City, Lincoln City and Darlington.

COACHDirector of Rugby, Mike Umaga, is a former professional rugby union player with Wellington Lions in New Zealand and Rotherham in England. He has represented Samoa in two World Cups, in 1995 and 1999. Mike is a Level 4 coach with more than 20 years’ coaching experience. He has a vast knowledge of player development and an extensive network of rugby contacts.

STUDENT SUCCESSFormer Bishop Burton College student George Thornton is now a professional player with Wasps. He developed his all-round game during his time with the Men’s Academy, under the coaching of Director of Rugby, Mike Umaga. He became a cornerstone of the Scotland U20 squad at the 2017 Junior World Cup.

MEN’S RUGBY ACADEMIES

COACHTom Gilchrist is Head Coach of AASE Boys’ Rugby. He is an RFU Level 3 Accredited Coach and RFU Educator. In his most recent years as a professional coach, Tom has focused on identifying and developing 15 to 20-year-old players, preparing them for professional rugby environments and international programmes.

Bishop Burton runs men’s rugby academies at further education-level (Junior Academy) and degree-level (Senior Academy), working in partnership with Greene King IPA Championship side Yorkshire Carnegie.

The Junior Academy plays in both the RFU AASE League and the Association of Colleges (AoC) Premier League. Junior Academy players will normally have been playing at a high level of youth rugby union, been on an RFU DPP programme, or have been playing adult rugby union.

The Senior Academy competes in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS), in the Premier North 1A League and is pushing for promotion to the BUCS Super League. Senior Academy players will normally have had regional or county honours, academy experience or have been playing at a high standard of adult rugby.

WOMEN’S RUGBY ACADEMY

Bishop Burton runs a high performance women’s programme for both further education and degree students.

The academy competes in the Association of Colleges (AoC) League, in partnership with Tyrell’s Premiership Women’s side, Darlington Mowden Park Sharks.

Students benefit from expert coaching, a high-quality training programme and use of excellent equipment.

STUDENT SUCCESSDuring her time at Bishop Burton, Rachel Woosey has represented England at youth and senior level. She has been selected for the full national Sevens squad, as well as the full England Elite squad.

COACHLaToya Mason is Head Coach of the Women’s Rugby Academy. During her playing career, she amassed 70 caps for England, winning the World Cup in 2014 and being a runner-up in 2010 and 2017. LaToya has 15 years’ of coaching experience, previously working for the RFU.

NETBALL ACADEMY

STUDENT SUCCESSLaura Kelly, captain of Netball Academy National Premier Squad, has competed at the very highest level after being selected for the U17 England National Academy. Laura was also selected to represent the Association of Colleges (AoC) Great Britain College National Team and has played for the Yorkshire U19 NPL squad. Laura plays her club netball at the highly regarded Leeds Athletic Netball Club and is looking forward to taking her place in the Leeds Rhinos Netball U19 NPL squad.

COACHJo Richardson is Head Coach of the Netball Academy. She is also Head Coach of Kingston Netball and has more than 20 years’ experience coaching within the field of health and fitness, delivering workshops and masterclasses across the country. Jo is also a member of the Humberside County Netball Association coaching focus group.

The Bishop Burton Netball Academy provides students with an exciting route into performance netball.

The college campus has been endorsed as an Elite Netball Centre, working in partnership with Leeds Rhinos, and the weekly academy programme comprises up to 10 hours technical and tactical coaching and four hours of fitness training with specialist strength and conditioning staff.

Each member of the academy, which competes in the College Superleague, receives a kit package, including tracksuit, jumper, training shirt and travel top.

PENTATHLON ACADEMYBishop Burton is an official academy of Pentathlon GB and home of Yorkshire Pentathlon.

The college runs training academies to support talented athletes in the sport, as well as supporting newcomers.

The academy helps prepare athletes for their Pentathlon GB competition programme. Students can join the academy in the 16+ group and progress through to degree-level to continue the opportunity to balance high performance training with academic studies.

THIS PROGRAMME IS IDEAL FOR PENTATHLETES WHO ARE AIMING TO COMPETE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL.

There is no cost for further education courses and although tuition fees for degrees are £9,000 a year, loans and other financial support is available.

BTEC LEVEL 1 DIPLOMA IN SPORT AND LEISURE

This course provides students with a specialist work-related focus and covers key knowledge and practical skills. It is designed to provide students with the grounding they need to progress to a higher sports course.

One year full-time, normally in college three days a week.

BTEC LEVEL 2 EXTENDED CERTIFICATE IN SPORT

This course is an excellent introduction to the sport and recreation industry, allowing students to gain practical experience and take part in a range of activities and enrichment opportunities. The qualification prepares students for employment and is suitable for anyone wanting to launch a career in sport. One of the most popular aspects of the course is that students have the chance to participate in sports such as football, rugby, hockey and kayaking.

WHAT YOU STUDY

- Practical sports- Injury in sport- Employment in sport- Work experience and employability skills- English and Maths, as required.

One year full-time, normally in college three days a week.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

This course is for academy-level sports students to help maximise their chances of developing a career. With sports academies in football, rugby (union and league) and netball, as well as individuals who compete in athletics, golf and martial arts, this programme helps support professional sporting development as well as academic. Different study options are available to suit your needs.

- One-year Extended Certificate, including English and Maths

- One-year Foundation Diploma- Two-year Diploma, including English and Maths- Two-year Extended Diploma.

One or two years full-time, depending on study programme.

It is designed to give a full understanding of the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in this industry.

Life experience of non-traditional students will be taken into account when considering applications. The successful completion of an entry task will be required for applicants who do not have the formal entry requirements.

HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE (HNC) IN SPORT

This programme offers a balance between employability skills and the knowledge essential for students with entrepreneurial, employment or academic aspirations. There is an increasing demand for people with a combination of both academic and practical competence within the industry, which this course aims to address. It is designed to develop appropriate professional attitudes, such as critical thinking, initiative and motivation.

Applicants should have 48 UCAS points at A-Level or a Level 3 Extended Diploma or equivalent.Life experience of mature students will be taken into account when considering applications. The successful completion of an entry task may be required when considering applications without the required formal entry qualifications.

FdSc SPORT, EXERCISE SCIENCE AND HEALTH

This degree will enable you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the sport and health sectors and integration of these. You will be given flexibility to specialise in either a sport or health context within the assessments you will undertake. Work-based learning will also enhance your knowledge of the industry and help you develop vocational skills so you feel comfortable in a range of relevant employment settings. Opportunities to work with local sports clubs, primary schools and health providers will develop your understanding of the subject and the programme also develops a range of research skills for the industry and further study.

WHAT YOU STUDY

- Anatomy and physiology- Sport and exercise psychology- Health screening and exercise prescription- Diet and nutrition- Nutrition for sport health and wellbeing- Coaching children and young performers- Research methods for sport, health and exercise- Work based learning.

Two years full-time or three years part-time. This usually includes three days per week academic study.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have a minimum of 80 UCAS points at A-Level or a Level 3 Extended Diploma, plus a satisfactory reference. Life experience of mature students will be taken into account when considering applications. The successful completion of an entry task may be required when considering applications without the required formal entry qualifications. For advanced entry to final stage, a relevant Foundation Degree or HND at merit level or higher is needed.

BSc SPORT, EXERCISE SCIENCE AND HEALTH

This degree will develop your critical understanding of the sport and health sectors and contemporary developments in these fields. The course is designed to provide flexibility as modules provide both sport and health-related concepts. Also, you will have optional modules at Level 6 to specialise further, depending on your career pathway and personal interests. A range of both theoretical and practical competencies will be developed through different types of assessment and teaching methods.

Students who study any subject at further education or degree-level are able to play for an academy, if they show the required level of talent or potential in their chosen sport.

For the full Bishop Burton College experience, and in order to be able to fully dedicate yourself to your chosen sport, you can live on campus during your time with us.

If you do so, you’ll be joining a sporting community where you will make friends for life.

We have different halls of residence to cater for individual needs, all supported by our dedicated team of experienced wardens. There is also a self-catering option for degree students.

The college has welfare officers on hand to help deal with any issues you may have and students who live on campus are able to enjoy a huge number of social activities throughout the year.

Most of these are organised by the Student Association and you will have the chance to get involved and shape the student experience.
