My Philosophies about Education

I hear and I forgot I see and I remember I do and I understand

Failure is not an option Non-participation is not acceptable

Give a man to fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for life.

Those who work, learn.

“I can’t” stands for:

I

Completely

Admit I’m

Not

Trying

The workers and professionals of the world will soon be divided into two distinct groups; those who will control computers and those who will be controlled by

computers. It would be best for you to be in the former group. ~Lewis D. Eigen~

Arrival • On time

• Be logged on to your computer by the time I take attendance at the bell

• If you must use restroom ask Mrs. Awde before the bell rings and then go and return quickly. Access to restroom during class will happen only in an absolute emergency.

Tardy

• If you have this class first period, and you arrive to my room after the 7:30 a.m. bell, go directly to the dean. You will not be allowed in without a late pass.

• After first period, if you are late: come here directly with a pass that excuses your tardiness. If you don’t have a pass, you will deal with consequences with me for the first three times, and after that, it goes to the dean.

Today’s work

• Always posted on board when you enter the classroom

• If working independently, log on to your

computer and get right to work.

• If we’re doing something together, log on to your computer and be ready for instruction.

• When I say that I am ready to begin and that you should close anything else on the desktop. I mean everything and I mean now.

Printing—more about this later . . .

• Always use print preview first

• If you printed and made a mistake: get up, recycle

it, and print a new one

• Leave a correct copy on the printer

• Missing printed assignments can be placed in the

assignment bin which is next to the printer

• If you submitted something to Google Classroom

and made a mistake, delete it and resubmit.

Departure

• Stay in seats until the bell rings o I will not relent on this and no one will leave the room until everyone is in their

seat

o Seniors: that means you, too. (I make exceptions for folks who have been working in Room 305 and come into Room 304 at the end of the period).

• Recycle any returned papers and clean up around your work area

• PUSH CHAIRS IN before leaving the room o They are a fire hazard if not pushed in, as students can’t get by them

• Regarding the chairs: they’re awesome! o Take care of them

o Don’t spin or roll or go up and down repetitively or unnecessarily

o ENJOY THE PROFESSIONAL AND COZY FEELING OF THIS CLASSROOM

Help

• Always ask for help when you need it—that’s what

I’m here for

• When I help a student in the class, remaining

students may chat quietly, but:

• Class must immediately regroup upon Mrs. Awde’s

return to the teacher station

In this room, you should always be able to answer the following questions for any visitor:

What are you doing?

Be able to articulate the assignment

Why are you doing it?

Understand the value of practicing skills

How do you know that you’re getting it right?

Reference to rubric (if it applies), standards, teacher instruction, previous practice

Deadlines:

• Deadlines that are posted in Google Classroom and

on the classroom board are to be strictly adhered to

for APCS and AOIT 3.

• For AOIT 1 and 2, there will be a few deadlines that

are critical, and I will always let you know (via the

board) which deadlines those are. o Some deadlines I put into Google Classroom so that the software will alert

me if something that I assigned a while ago was turned in so that I can

access it and grade it, but I will continue to accept the work without

penalty.

Major Rules • No cell phones

• ZERO TOLERANCE o This includes charging. I don’t want to see it AT ALL.

o The first time I see it, I’ll take it and return it to you at end of the period

• No arguments about this o The second time I see it, I’ll take it and give it to the dean

• No arguments about this either, or you will be headed to the dean along with your phone

• NOTE: When my coursework requires these devices, that is entirely different. Or if you have a specific need that is justifiable, please do me the courtesy of asking first, and permission will be granted.

Major Rules Academic Integrity

• On quizzes and tests, you must work independently. o “Eyes in the boat” means to keep your eyes forward on your own work. Do not try to

look at the work of the student sitting next to you.

• On classroom assignments, you are welcome to ask me for help or to ask a fellow classmate, but you are to do your own work. o If two students turn in the same work, that would be considered cheating and both

students would receive a zero on the work. • I rarely run into this problem in my classes (but there’s usually at least one

doozie per year), but when I do, I take it very seriously. • Cheating incidents result when one student has done the work and one has not.

The one who has done the work, meaning only to help their friend, ends up with a zero. So does the person who hadn’t done the work.

o Think about that: the one who hadn’t done the work was already getting a zero, so the only one who is hurt when the cheating is uncovered is the one who did the work!!

o To those of you who do the work: be empowered to say, “I really want to help you, but I can’t give you my work. I don’t want to take a zero!”

• I may not discover it the first time, or every time, but don’t risk it!

Page 19: Welcome to Mrs. Awde’s classroom...Classroom Routines, Rituals and Policies #3 Arrival • On time • Be logged on to your computer by the time I take attendance at the bell •

Major Rules • I’m a rule follower and a rule enforcer

o All school policies are enforced in this classroom

Welcome to Mrs. Awde's Classroom 19

Page 20: Welcome to Mrs. Awde’s classroom...Classroom Routines, Rituals and Policies #3 Arrival • On time • Be logged on to your computer by the time I take attendance at the bell •

Major Rules • If you are ever absent from class, you must ask me what

work you missed, and then make the time to do that

work.

• “I was absent” is not an acceptable excuse for not

learning the subject matter.

• If you have access to the Parent Portal (info to follow)

that makes this process very easy. o If you don’t have access to the Parent Portal, you must ask me.

o Google Classroom is also helpful for knowing what assignments are missing.

• Advisory Period (as of this writing, I’m not sure how much

time will be available to you to make up missing

assignments during the school day).

Try using this Grading Spreadsheet

• If you use a version of the attached spreadsheet

(be sure to use the section that applies to the

course that you’re enrolled in), you can keep pretty

good track of your grades. o If I have assigned something that you haven’t turned in yet, you can put a

zero in its place to see the impact that the zero will have on your grade.

o Over my MANY years of teaching, I have discovered that students are still

mystified by the impact a single zero can have—in general—but

especially when there are very few (or just one) grade in a particular

category.

Major Rules • No sleeping or heads down during class time

o If you’re not feeling well, ask to be sent to the nurse’s office

o If your head is down, and you don’t want to go to the nurse, I will ask you

to pick up your head and participate.

o If you do not, I will give you a pass for after-school detention to make up

the work that you missed.

o If you don’t go to that, you will be assigned a dean’s detention, during

which time you will stay after school without the benefit of making up

missed work.

Point of Information • Lab Protocol

o Thin Client Environment

• Every time we turn the computer completely off, all that is not saved is

lost

• This includes saved passwords online, including Google

Chrome/Email/Classroom log on.

o To expedite matters, we will endeavor (hiccups do occur) to shut the

machines down only on Fridays.

• This means that your login to Google products should remain intact

from Tuesday-Friday, but each Monday you will have to log on again

• On Monday, you may detect a lag on the network as all students are

logging on for the first time that day.

Welcome to Mrs. Awde's Classroom 27

Consequences • Students who fail to meet the expectations of this

classroom will face consequences: o Caution

o After school detention

o Dean’s office

o Repeated offenses will result in a change of seat and/or a call home

o If any behavior interferes with student learning, a fast forward to dean’s

office is always an option. I do not promise to caution first, if the situation

demands immediate exclusion from the classroom.

• Notifications: o Detention notification

o Student pass to the dean’s office

As we begin . . . • . . . I’ve noticed the following about students in my

classes: o When I explain something, be it subject matter or the requirements of an

assignment, students fall into one of three categories:

1. They get it the first time and do exactly as instructed. In large part this is true because they actively engage in the listening process.

2. They don’t quite get it the first time and they ask questions until they do.

3. They don’t get it the first time, they’re bound and determined to figure it out on their own, but they fail to do so. The result is unsatisfactory work.

I recommend being in groups 1 or 2. Not understanding and not asking questions is not a good plan.

BOTTOM LINE: ASK QUESTIONS WHEN NECESSARY.

IT’S KNOWN AS THE SOCRATIC METHOD (named after Socrates)
