A Season of Celebrations On behalf of the parish families of Saint Alphonsus and Saint Alexis, we congratulate our young people who are celebrating graduations this year.

To the graduating class of Blessed Francis Seelos Academy, we are grateful to have shared a role in your education and formation in what is a life long journey of discipleship with Jesus. We recognize that the transition continues in moving from a parish program to a Diocesan regional model of leadership and governance. We are grateful for your patience in this process and we look forward to collectively building a stronger school with a solid Catholic identity. The following is a list of this year’s graduates of Blessed Francis Seelos Academy:

We also remember with pride our young people who are graduating from high school - the Class of 2019. Stay close to Jesus, living the gift of the Mass and being a part of the amazing Body of Christ. Live your faith and know God’s presence and love always! (It’s not too late to register to participate in this year’s Baccalaureate Mass and luncheon that will be hosted at Saint Alexis this year. Please call the Parish Center Office by tomorrow, Monday, June 10.) Finally, to our young people who are graduating from undergraduate studies, your years of studies at college have in part prepared you for life and set you on a course to celebrate your God given talents and abilities. May you know not only your family’s pride, but God’s pride in your accomplishments. Remember that true success is found in putting God first in your life. May you trust the Lord to lead you where you can now best serve His people, knowing that you are His, and He is forever yours. May you grow into your future as an engaged member of the Church. God bless you all!

Choosing Godparents Rather frequently, questions and controversies arise as to who may serve as a Godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism or as a Sponsor for Confirmation. As a service to all families, I would like to review the guidelines established by the Church concerning Godparent eligibility. These requirements should be considered before the parents of a child ask anyone to be a Godparent for their son or daughter. The decision as to who should be a Godparent should be based upon who would provide the best example of Catholic living for the child and not merely for r easons of friendship or to please family members. The Godparent is chosen not as an honor for the Godparent, but for the well-being and faith development of the child. In order to be a Godparent for Baptism or to serve as a Sponsor for Confirmation, an individual must be a practicing Catholic, at least 16 years of age, and have received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation. If this person is married, then the marriage must be a valid, sacramental marriage (one recognized and blessed by the Catholic Church) The potential Godparent must be registered in a Catholic parish and able to obtain from his or par ish a letter of eligibility to be a Sponsor. Only one Godparent is required by Church (Canon) law. The Godparent may be a man or a woman. However, if two Godparents are selected (the more common practice), then there must be one man and one woman chosen. In other words, a child cannot have two men or two women serve as Godparents. In extraordinary situations when two Catholic Godparents cannot be found, then one person who was baptized in another Christian denomination (i.e. Presbyterian, Lutheran, Methodist, etc.) may serve as a Christian Witness. However , former Catholics who have left the Church for another Christian denomination are not permitted to serve as a Christian Witness. Since Baptism is the foundational sacrament in the life of a Catholic, great care should be taken in deciding who serve as a Godparent. The guidelines listed above are meant to assist parents in making a reasonable decision as to to who will fulfill this important role in their child’s life. These requirements are That of the universal Church (Canon Law). Therefore, individual priests are not at liberty to dispense from them. I hope this information will be helpful in bringing clarity and understanding before asking individuals to serve as a Godparent or Sponsor for your child’s Baptism or Confirmation. Thank you.

May the choirs of angels welcome her and where Lazarus is poor no longer, may she find eternal rest.

will be scheduled when classes resume. Thank you.

Saint Alphonsus and Saint Alexis News Preparing our Hearts for the Holy Spirit By Dave VanVickle, Director for Evangelization

This time of year we cannot help but consider the role of the Holy Spirit in the daily life of the Catholic. Pentecost is coming and with the Apostles we should be in the “Upper Room” preparing for the promise of the Father. How can we prepare to receive the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the Third person of the Trinity and He freely gives Himself to those he wishes. Of course, we all receive the Holy Spirit through the Sacraments but how can we prepare our hearts to cooperate with this gift? I am going to suggest three simple things to prepare for the feast of Pentecost and to cooperate with the gift of the Holy Spirit every day.

Add in a special prayer to your daily devotions called, “The Secret of Sanctity” by Cardinal Mercier. It goes like this:

O, Holy Spirit, soul of my soul, I adore you. Enlighten, guide, strengthen and console me. Tell me what I ought to do and command me to do it. I promise to be submissive to everything that you permit to happen to me. Show me only what is your will. Amen.

Read the Book of Acts. Some call Acts the “Gospel of the Holy Spirit.” There are twenty-seven chapters so consider reading a Chapter each day for a month. Maybe even do that a couple or several times a year. Watch how the Holy Spirit animated the Church and empowered the Apostles in the beginning.

Get to know the spouse of the Holy Spirit. Mary, the Virgin Mother of God is called the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit finds Mary in our life then He will surely rush into our life as well. Maybe try praying a single Hail Mary each day for the grace to be able to receive more of the Holy Spirit and surrender more fully to His action in our life.

We are all in need of the Holy Spirit. With the Blessed Apostles, let us prepare for His coming at Pentecost and each and every day.

On Mission - Receive the Holy Spirit After his resurrection from the dead Jesus appears to his anxious Apostles and, knowing their fear and uncertainty, pours forth the Holy Spirit upon them and bestows his gift of peace. For the next forty days he promises that he will be with them always and that he will send the Advocate to be with them as they will be called to continue his work in the world. Finally, after ascending to heaven, Jesus sends forth his Spirit at Pentecost to fill the Apostles with confidence and courage in order to go out to all the world to tell the good news and grow the Church. As the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative continues to unfold we are called to prayer for a new Pentecost in the Church of Pittsburgh. This new outpouring of the Holy Spirit can bestow the peace we seek in the midst of change and planning for the future. God’s Spirit can also fill us with the confidence and courage that all of us – clergy and faithful alike – will need to do our part to build up the Church and make it ever more alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

MASS INTENTION REQUESTS

The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or deceased, is a beautiful part of our Catholic tradition. The Mass is the greatest prayer; it is the sacrifice of Christ. Masses may be offered for the living as well as for the repose of the soul of someone who has died, for family

difficulties, for sickness, birthdays, anniversaries, as well as in thanksgiving. Many Masses are available in the coming months at both Saint Alexis and Saint Alphonsus. Mass Intention Request forms for 2019 Masses may be found at the back of the church and submitted to the Parish Office at 10090 Old Perry Highway.
