PRESIDENT CANDIDATES

Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? I have been a member of RPI SWE for three years and held an officer position for two

years. Being involved in SWE has been one of my most defining college experiences and that’s what I hope to make it for every SWE member.

I’d like to see the organization continue to become better and better and to increase its presence on campus.

I really believe in the cause of providing a supportive network and professional skills to promote women of all ages to pursue technical careers and undergraduate and graduate degrees in the STEM fields.

I am proud to be a member of SWE.

What qualifies you for the position? As the current RPI SWE Vice President I have been very involved in SWE this year,

including running a few E-board meetings and one general body meeting. These experiences have shown me the elements necessary to run a successful meeting and how to prepare myself so that the meetings run well.

My experience on the E-board has shown me the importance of working together and how succession training is necessary to the continuity of the organization. I look forward to working with a great group of women and ensuring that each of them are prepared and supported in their positions. It is also important to me to encourage members of the general body to have a greater involvement in the organization through committees and helping with events.

I have attended two national SWE conferences and one regional conference (two as of the end of the year).

I have experience in representing RPI SWE at these conferences and at various meetings with corporate sponsors and campus contacts.

I am organized and punctual and I will be careful to prepare meeting agendas and PowerPoint's as well as submit the RCR reports on time. I feel prepared to take over this role and show RPI SWE for the best that it is.

What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE? Vice President of RPI SWE ’09-’10 Regional Conference Planning Committee Co-Chair ’10 Secretary of RPI SWE ’08-’09 I have been involving in the planning of many of RPI SWE’s signature events including

Breaking Barriers Women Unite, the Etiquette Dinner, Registration Roundtable, Post-Grad Panel, Regional Conference attendance, Off-campus living informational event.

Other information :I am very excited about taking on this role in RPI SWE and I will devote a great deal of my time to making sure that we continue to excel. I want SWE events to be something that all members look forward to by offering exciting new opportunities for professional development, networking with corporate contacts or alumni and inspiring the next generation of engineers with outreach programs.

Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? In general, I am running to be an e-board officer because I have served on the e-board for the

past year and a half and I have never seen a team like it. Everyone has such motivation to really cause change and hold standards high. I think it is a great environment to be in. I have learned so much not only from the professionals we interact with, but from my peers and their experiences.

I am running for a position to be able to continuously give back to an organization that offers me so much.

In particular I am choosing to run for Vice President because I enjoy being involved in SWE in whatever way I can, and especially helping when more man power is needed in certain situations. Sometimes as outreach director I was too busy with one project to offer any help to others or to carry a new idea through.

I feel vice president has a broader definition and in that position I would be able to participate in many events always learning from one and applying it to another.

I also really love regional’s and would be excited to be on the front lines of this event!

What qualifies you for the position? I feel I am qualified to be Vice President of the Society of Women Engineers because of my

experience this past year as Outreach Director. I feel this role held a lot of responsibility to be able to organize and perform an event in manner that portrays a positive image of RPI SWE to the public. One has to think of all possibilities when planning and be prepared for whatever might come your way. As outreach director, I was the leader of the outreach committee, and through this experience I found the importance of teamwork and the opinions and ideas of others on the committee. We as SWE, would not have been able to say we accomplished “Girl Scout Engineering Day” without each and every participant. The sign holder in the parking lot is just as important as each activity leader.

And even in my experience with the Junior First Lego League, when Courtney Moore approached me at the end of last year I was hesitant to say we could do it because “I didn’t feel we had the time,” but it was really I didn’t have the time. I have learned how to combat my micromanaging impulses and really to use the strengths of each team member.

Already serving on the e-board has taught me people skills useful for scheduling and arranging events on campus. Most importantly I understand that sometimes, as much as RPI students love email, it is not always the best method of communication. I am comfortable seeking out individuals in person or even calling them.

Additionally, Vice President is responsible for collaborating with NSBE and SHPE to organize Breaking Barriers Women Unite. I have attended BBWU for the two years I have been in SWE and I feel I have a good grasp on its goals and purpose. Because I have attended more than once I have been able to see it grow and change and have given thought to how I would be able to continue the tradition and also add on to it the following year.

What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE? I joined SWE at the beginning of freshman year and came onto the e-board my second semester

to fill in the position of Social/Networking/Alumni Coordinator. This year I am the Outreach Director. In addition to fulfilling my responsibilities on the e-board I attend events such as Breaking

Barriers Women Unite, Home SWE Home, The Inside Scoop on Undergraduate Research, decorating the display case, The Fall Alumni Social and many more.

Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? I am choosing to run for a SWE officer position as I believe I can bring value to

RPI SWE in the positions I have chosen. This past year, I have dedicated my qualities to RPI SWE in both its executive board and its general body.

I believe my commitment to RPI SWE and my motivation in its continued development and excellence will be an asset in the future.

What qualifies you for the position? I believe I am qualified to run for vice president as I have worked closely with

the current vice president, Andrea Nordberg, on Breaking Barriers: Women Unite. I was one of the two SWE representatives for the event and I was responsible for ensuring the event ran smoothly. I also created the website for the event and organized the décor.

I have been responsible for the reservation of the projectors for our general body meetings and other events and I have also reserved rooms as a member of the Asian Awareness Week executive board.

My organizational skills have come to light as a result of my treasury position on the RPI SWE executive board of 2009-2010. Also, due to my treasury position and budget creation, I have a keen knowledge of the extent and expanse of each SWE event.

I have volunteered at multiple SWE events since my involvement in SWE freshman year, and I am organizing one, the SWE Etiquette Dinner of this year.

I believe I can be a good SWE vice president because I am committed to SWE.

What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE? I have been involved on the SWE executive board 2009-2010 as SWE treasurer I am on the regional planning committee I was on the Breaking Barriers: Women Unite committee for this year and for

Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? I have had a great experience as a freshman representative on

the E-Board and I would really enjoy continuing to contribute to RPI SWE.

There are many potential events that I would love to create with the rest of the E-Board, and as always I want to help to continuously improve our chapter and its reputation.

What qualifies you for the position? Our treasurer needs to be very organized and level headed,

especially considering the amount of funds that RPI SWE maintains and collects from sponsors and awards.

I am very competent in Excel, the format the treasurer uses to report, track, and evaluate our funds.

I am also easy to contact and I can ensure that documents I maintain are current.

Maintaining a current budget allows RPI SWE to really know what we have to work with in order to make every event the best it can be.

What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE?

This past year I was a freshman representative for SWE. I assisted with many events and also had the opportunity to

coordinate the Home SWE Home off-campus housing event. I am also on the Outreach Committee, and volunteered at Girl

Scout Engineering Day and Exploring Engineering Day.Other information:

In addition to heavy involvement with SWE, I have continued to participate on the club volleyball team here at RPI and maintain my grades. I am confident that I would be a board member that SWE can be proud of.

Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? I was on the E-board this past year and enjoyed it very

much. I learned a lot about myself, the other members of SWE and the SWE organization. I feel that being a part of the E-board is a great opportunity for me to be able to grow and is a way that I can contribute my ideas and talents to RPI SWE.

What qualifies you for the position? I am organized, and good at keeping track of money. As

the president for Independent Council I have already written a budget for a union funded club and know the process of handling union funds.

I have run several events and managed payment for the items needed for the events. I have served on the E-board this past year and understand the commitment and responsibilities required of this position. Being an E-board member has also given me insight into what needs to be budgeted for SWE events.

What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE?I have been on the E-board. I have attended many of the SWE events held by other SWE E-board members. I volunteered as a group chaperone for the Explore Engineering Day.

I have enjoyed participating in SWE events and would like to give back to SWE by becoming an officer and help promote through the website and make sure members can find out information for events.

What qualifies you for the position? I am very good with finances (dual major with

economics) and extremely organized. I believe I can do a good job managing and

allocating the funds. What activities and/or committees have you been

involved in with SWE? Attended the Breaking Barriers Women Unite Will be attending the Regional Conference!

What qualifies you for the position(s)? Please be specific in regards to descriptions and officer duties listed in bylaws.

As a freshman representative, I have had the opportunity to take the E-Board minutes during multiple Sunday meetings when our secretary was unavailable.

This gave me experience and confidence in my potential to perform the secretary’s duties to the fullest.

I am also quite organized and familiar with the activity reports that the secretary will have to collect and maintain.

I also look forward to the possibility of working on the expanded responsibilities of the secretary by maintaining information on our traditions and achievements.

In this way, we would be closer to more resources and possibly more expensive technology to teach and show children to get them even more exciting about engineering. As just RPI SWE we cannot always afford this or do not have access to, but we have the man power and motivation to organize. I also enjoy working with professionals and highly value networking.

What qualifies you for the position? I feel I am qualified to be Vice President of the Society of Women Engineers because of my

As outreach director I coordinated frequently with Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York, meeting with the program developer in the Fall to plan ways SWE can offer volunteers and also, seeking resources for how we can advertise our pre-existing events (like Girl Scout Engineering Day). I believe I upheld a positive image of RPI SWE through my presentations in both Girl Scout Engineering Day and Exploring Engineering Day and would like to continue this on the corporate relations side. I understand the value of networking and seizing any opportunity that is given to you. This past summer at my internship I had to not only communicate and seek out professionals in my immediate facility, but I also had to reach out to other distributors to test their products. At the end of my summer I even presented my findings to the distributor. As corporate coordinator I feel I would be able to uphold a highly professional image of RPI SWE and find new ways to use my position to advance SWE.

What qualifies you for the position? I believe I can be a good corporate coordinator as, through my

financial background with SWE, I am familiar with the corporate donors of our organization.

I am familiar with the way companies deposit money, as well as their contacts in the Rensselaer community they use to interact this way.

My organizational skills with money and my dedication to the SWE budget and its handling will be assets in the corporate coordinator position.

What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE? I have been involved on the SWE executive board 2009-2010 as SWE

Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? My unrestrained drive and social energy will benefit RPI’s SWE to continue our

involvement with any technological or engineering related company. I would like to insure that all corporations which any of our members holds

even a small spark of interest in, is contacted and associated with RPI SWE. At the same time, I would like to reach out to engineering and technology

related corporations which may not be as common or popular, to ensure RPI SWE’s exposure and verify a solid flow of information to our members.

What qualifies you for the position? To exhibit my experience and comfort level with professional matters:

While serving on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, I qualified Reactor Operator, Reactor Technician, and Watch Supervisor, achieving such an expert status, that every nuclear-trained operator on the ship was required to pass a written test, and a two hour long oral examination, each created and administered solely by myself. Before that, I was the supervisor for #2 reactor plant, aboard the same ship. This job included organizing, supervising, and scheduling over 300 Reactor I&C maintenance items, to include the reactor vessel itself. At the same time, I became the liaison between Norfolk Naval Shipyard Engineers, and the Roosevelt’s Reactor Controls Department regarding the aforementioned maintenance items.

To exhibit my experience and repose for planning events: I have held the position of assistant manager of a nationally franchised

restaurant for just over a year. I have also served in restaurants for a total of 5 years, in establishments ranging from a locally owned Mexican restaurant, to fine dining, to include the banquet hall at Saratoga National Golf Course. On a personal note, I adore dining and the restaurant business, and hope to open my own restaurant, when I retire.

To exhibit my interest in academia’s extra-curricular activities: While at the University of Florida, I served as the American Nuclear Society’s

Representative to the Benton Engineering Council (the student legislative body for UF’s College of Engineering), for two years. At this time I served on the finance committee of the Council, to include a year as Assistant Treasurer.

Other information: This is my first year at RPI, and therefore my first year with RPI SWE. I am on the Regional Planning Conference Committee, and attending this years Regional Conference in Boston.

OUTREACH DIRECTOR CANDIDATES

Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? I have become much more active in SWE this year I think my talents could be put to good use as an officer I am dedicated and methodical, which can be seen with the outreach

events that I ran this semester. I also really enjoy teaching kids engineering concepts and seeing how

enthusiastic they are. And after serving on the Outreach Committee, I have had such a positive

experience that I want to have more input in planning the events.

What qualifies you for the position? This past semester I was leader of the Liquid Nitrogen event for GS

Engineering day and I modified the event with extremely positive results. I was the upperclassman responsible for the “How Fast Are You?” event

for EED but was unable to attend. I planned the event and prepared my group members to run the event

without me. I have experience working with children as well as teenagers in a setting

very similar to the outreach events. I was involved with a summer engineering camp called Design camp for

five years and taught as an intern for three of those five years.

What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE? I was an EED session leader, on the Quizbowl Committee, a GS

Engineering Day event leader, and a member of the Outreach Committee. In terms of non-outreach activities, I have been assisting the e-board

with whatever needs to be done, like grilling at the Welcome BBQ and going to purchase supplies for EED/GS Engineering Day.

I am also one of the most active members of RPI SWE and attend/assist almost every event that is held.

Other information:I am the Vice President of the Rifle Club and a member of the Racquetball Club. I also have a patent-in-progress stemming from my IED group project from last year.

Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? In general, I am interested in helping to plan activities for the

members of SWE to see more involvement and to benefit all members. Specifically, I am running for Outreach Coordinator because I am

excited about involving younger females in engineering activities. As a junior in high school, I attended a SWE overnight event at another college and appreciated the help and guidance put forth from the volunteers. Their attitude made me want to do the same for girls like me who are considering a math- or science-oriented field. I would be able to accomplish this as Outreach Coordinator.

What qualifies you for the position? I am a leader and a planner with a strong work ethic. I held multiple club president positions in high school and was very

involved in my role. I will be able to take on the responsibility of coordinating the required

outreach events and would like to see more outreach events held by SWE.

What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE? I have attended several SWE events, including Registration

Roundtable, Bowling Night, and the College Bowl. Additionally, I am part of the Outreach Committee and am secretary of

the Regional Conference Planning Committee. I was also a session leader for Exploring Engineering Day.

Other information:I consider myself to be an effortless leader. When I lead a group, I do not concentrate on ordering people to complete tasks; rather, I work alongside everyone to ensure a project is going smoothly and meets the standards of a group as a whole. Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? As a Freshman Representative for RPI SWE for the 2009-2010 academic

year, I have been exposed to numerous opportunities that are presented to SWE officers.

I have been able to influence children into engineering fields, presented research opportunities to the general body, and have learned leadership and personal skills through a unique leadership series.

I have been affected and have affected others through a position as a SWE officer, and I wish to continue to do so as Publicity Director.

What qualifies you for the position? I have represented the Class of 2013 as the Freshman Representative

and therefore have been exposed to the inner workings of the RPI SWE Executive Board.

I have experience with HTML and graphic design, and I have designed several advertisements that have been presented to the general campus, including advertisements for The Inside Scoop, Holiday Social, and Quizbowl. I have also had experience advertising to residents as a member of the Residence Hall Association – as a hall chair it is part of my duty to advertise events to the general public.

As general qualifications, I am highly organized and I have great communication skills, especially through electronic mediums.

opportunities that will be beneficial later on in the professional world.

I am applying for this position so that I can take advantage of all of these opportunities, while at the same time contributing to the successful running of our chapter. I have found being involved in SWE to be a rewording experience and I would really like to become more involved with in inner workings of the organization.

What qualifies you for the position? The position of Membership Director requires organization and

reliability, which are qualities that I think that I possess. I held a position with another organization on campus, which

required similar skills. I was the email coordinator for the Rensselaer Christian Association

for a year. The position required me to keep track of the email information of

everyone involved in the group as well as all of the information that needed to be sent out every week.

Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? I want to continue my involvement with SWE on the Executive Board. This past year I

have attempted to branch out and be more involved with SWE beyond my duties as the current Webmaster/Historian.

I want to grow as a person and help to ensure the future of SWE for years to come. As Knowledge Source Director I could ensure that students in SWE have greater

industry knowledge and a better-rounded view of engineering and professional development.

What qualifies you for the position? As SWE Quizbowl event chair I learned how to run an event successfully and increase

participation from the event the previous year. This experience and knowledge will help me as the Knowledge Source Director because I would be in charge of numerous events throughout the year that would bridge the gap between recruitment and retention of women in engineering. SWE Quizbowl is held during Engineers Week and is campus-wide which allows the participants to learn about RPI and National SWE.

I have attended Registration Roundtable the past 2 years so I know how it is set up and what to expect for that event. I want to increase the industry presence SWE has and help SWE become a top-notch organization. By increasing the plant tours and programs that enable women in engineering and technology to excel, RPI SWE could be a gold level collegiate section consistently, which is my goal.

As Current Webmaster I learned in a few weeks how to use and revamp a website and won the 2nd place Collegiate Website Award. As SWE Quizbowl event chair I increased participation from the previous year by 10%. The information session with Mark Lyden proved to be a success with only one seat left available that night.
