MISSION STATEMENT

Reflection from Fr. Timothy Preaching the Kingdom

Jesus begins his public ministry by announcing the good news of the Kingdom of God. There can only be a king-dom when a people is governed by a sovereign authority exercising power through law. God is holy and he exer-cises his dominion through the power of the Holy Spirit. His only law is love. The person who lives in God’s King-dom is the one who, in the freedom of love, submits himself to the action of the Spirit who is Lord and the giver of life. Adam and Eve rebelled against God and his sovereignty, thereby falling into and leading us all into sin. Jesus Christ, the new Adam, filled with the Holy Spir-it, begins his mission by establishing the Kingdom of God by his own authority. Evil spirits are subject to him and show that their power over men is coming to an end and that the Kingdom of God has entered into the world. The word spoken by Jesus is not one of doctrinal opinions. Rather, it calls all to obedience through faith, the keep-ing of his commandments, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Today it is the work of us all as Church to bring the Kingdom to all persons on the face of the earth. Celebrations this week:

Tuesday, 2 February – Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Also known as “Candlemas” because of the bless-ing of candles and procession at Mass, this feast com-memorates the presentation of the baby Jesus in the temple 40 days after his birth. Today is also the “World Day for Consecrated Life” dedicated to celebrating those priests, brothers, sisters, and others who have consecrat-ed themselves to God through the vows of poverty, chas-tity, and obedience. Wednesday, 3 – St. Blaise, bishop and martyr. Alt-hough today is an optional memorial, it is often celebrat-ed in commemoration of this saint whose curing powers have long been extolled by the faithful. At the end of Mass on this day the faithful will be offered the oppor-tunity to receive a blessing of their throat for the curing of diseases. Friday, 5 – St. Agatha, virgin and martyr. This Sicilian saint probably died under Decius in 251. She is the pa-tron of Palermo and Catania in Italy. Her name is men-tioned in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I). Saturday, 6 – St. Paul Miki and companions, martyrs. These Jesuits, Franciscans and lay persons were mar-tyred in Nagasaki by the ruler of Hideyoshi on Feb. 5, 1597.

Predicar el Reino Jesús comienza su ministerio público con el anuncio de la buena nueva del Reino de Dios. Sólo puede haber un reino cuando un pueblo se gobierna por una autoridad soberana que ejercita el poder a través de la ley. Dios es Santo y ejercita su dominio por el poder del Espíritu Santo. Su única ley es el amor. Entonces, el que vive en el Reino de Dios se somete, en la libertad del amor, a la acción del Espíritu quien es el Señor y el dador de la vida. Adán y Eva se rebelaron contra Dios y contra su soberanía, y por eso cayeron en el pecado y nos lleva-ron a todos en el pecado. Pero Jesucristo es el nuevo Adán, lleno del Espíritu Santo. Comienza su misión con la instauración del Reino de Dios en este mundo. Los espíritus inmundos están sujetos a Él y demuestran que su poder en este mundo está acabando y que el Reino de Dios ya llegó. Jesucristo habla no de opiniones doc-trinales sino una palabra que llama a la obediencia por la fe, por la vivencia de los mandamientos, y por la guía del Espíritu Santo. Hoy nos compete a todos los miem-bros de la Iglesia a llevar el Reino a todas las personas de la tierra. Celebraciones de esta semana: Martes 2 de febrero – Fiesta de la Presentación del Señor. Se conoce también como “Candelaria” por la bendición de velas y procesión que tiene lugar durante la Misa. Conmemora la presentación del Santo Infante en el Templo 40 días después de nacer. Es también la Jornada Mundial de la Vida Consagrada, en que se cele-bra a los sacerdotes, hermanos y hermanas que se han consagrado la vida a Dios por medio de los votos de pobreza, castidad y obediencia. Miércoles 3 – San Blas, obispo y mártir. Aunque es conmemoración opcional, se celebra mucho para con-memorar este santo que tiene mucho poder de cura-ción. Al término de la Misa se ofrece a todos los que asisten a que pasen adelante para recibir una bendición en la garganta contra las enfermedades. Viernes 5 – Santa Águeda, virgen y mártir. Esta santa siciliana probablemente murió bajo Decio en 251. Es patrona de Palermo y Catania en Italia. Su nombre se incluye en la lista de santos en el Canon romano (la ple-garia eucarística I). O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every con-tagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta Holy Rosary Why should I pray the Rosary? The Rosary is a special set of prayers to God that help to remember the most important events in the lives of Mary and Jesus.

These events are called the Mysteries. There are 20 Mysteries in all:

5 are called The Joyful Mysteries, 5 are called The Luminous Mysteries, 5 are called The Sorrowful Mysteries, 5 are called Glorious Mysteries.

These Mysteries are stories about the lives of Mary and Jesus and each group of Mysteries is called a decade.

FEAST OF FAITH I Confess One form of the penitential rite at the beginning of Mass is the traditional Confiteor, or “I confess,” a prayer that was formerly prayed by the priest alone at the foot of the altar, but which is now prayed by the entire assembly. The Confit-eor is at once personal—“I confess”—and communal, prayed aloud, together. We recognize that sin does not just sepa-rate us from God; sin comes between us and others, isolating us. We acknowledge that sin has many dimensions, indi-vidual and communal: sins of thought, sins of speech, sins of action, sins of omission. Sin is not something that happens to us; sin is something we do. In the Confiteor, we take responsibility for our own actions. The repeated insistence on our “fault,” with the ritual gesture of striking the breast, an ancient sign of penitence, is not meant to lower our self-esteem. Rather, it acknowledges our human instinct to transfer the blame whenever we can (“The devil made me do it!”). This prayer stops us short. We take responsibility for ourselves, our actions, our failure to act. Then we cry out to God in those ancient words, Kyrie, eleison—Lord, have mercy. For the sinner who repents, there is mercy.
