TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Careful readers of the "Treasures" will have noticed that the two columns about the oldest monastic communities in the United States refer to the colonial states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Orleans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were genteel, well-educated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pestilence-ridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding patterns of family and domestic life. At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British assault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of J anuary 7, 1815, the women of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother superior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Americans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relocated in 1824, but their old monastery is pre-served as a museum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. FORTALECIDOS POR EL PAN DE VIDA Hoy retomamos el discurso sobre el "Pan de Vida" del Evangelio según san Juan que comenzó hace dos semanas. Juan alude a los ancestros de los judíos que comieron el maná en el desierto. Hoy pensaríamos sobre todo en el pueblo de Israel caminando por el desierto, pero los judíos fieles también conocían el relato de Elías que escu-chamos hoy. Elías comió y bebió en el desierto, y con la fuerza de aquel alimento, el ángel del Señor lo envió en su viaje de cuarenta días y cuarenta noches (la cifra bíblica que simboliza un tiempo de preparación). De la misma manera que el alimento que recibió Elías en el desierto, Jesús le dice a su público que él es pan para la vida del mundo. Es muy importante que sigamos escuchando a Jesús después de su promesa de vida eterna, sin duda es una promesa maravillosa, pero esta "recompensa" no es la única razón para darnos un festín con el Pan de Vida. También vamos a la mesa con el fin de recibir fuerzas para el camino de la misión, de manera que el mundo entero pueda tener vida en la plenitud de Cristo. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1973 Juan A. Espinosa escribió la canción "Santa María del Camino" con la cual invita a la Madre de Dios a caminar con sus hermanos y hermanas en la fe. La canción reta al creyente a caminar a pesar de lo difícil que puede ser y a luchar por los cambios que sólo el Reino de Dios puede realizar. En todo esto María es invitada a caminar con el creyente. En esta semana recordamos la Asunción de María al cielo, y lo hacemos reconociendo que además de ser Madre de Dios y madre nuestra, ella también es nuestra hermana y compañera en el camino de la fe. Ella ha llegado a la meta de nuestra peregri-nación y lo ha hecho en cuerpo y alma por un privilegio singular. Nosotros también lo haremos en los últimos días cuando nuestro cuerpo resucite para unirse con nuestra alma. Legio Mariae kỷ niệm 70 năm tại Việt Nam

Nhân dịp kỷ niệm 70 năm thành lập tại Việt Nam, ngày 07/8/2018, đông đảo các hội viên Legio Mariae đã tề tựu về Vương cung Thánh đường Sở Kiện để tạ ơn.

Ban ủy viên và các hội viên đã bắt đầu với việc tổng kết, phúc trình những hoạt động, công tác đã thực hiện trong những năm qua, những điểm điểm mạnh cần phát huy và vấn đề cần phải khắc phục. Sau khi đọc kinh Catena, cha linh giám Giuse Vũ Ngọc Ruẫn đã ban huấn từ cho các hội viên đang hiện diện trong buổi tổng kết.

Thánh lễ diễn ra lúc 10g30 do Đức Hồng y Phêrô Nguyễn Văn Nhơn chủ tế, đồng tế có Đức cha Giuse Nguyễn Văn Yến, quý cha linh giám, cha khách với sự tham dự của quý khách gần xa, các hội viên thuộc Regia Hà Nội.

Mở đầu bài giảng, Đhy. Phêrô mời gọi cộng đoàn cùng tìm hiểu về Đức Maria để hiểu rõ hơn về Mẹ và có thể noi gương sống khiêm nhường đạo hạnh của Mẹ. “Đứng dưới chân thập giá, Đức Mẹ đã nhận lời trao phó của Đức Giêsu, đã nhận chúng ta là con của Mẹ và cũng giống như thánh Gioan, chúng ta cũng đón Mẹ về nhà mình. Giáo hội cho phép chúng ta gọi Đức Mẹ bằng nhiều danh xưng khác nhau, còn Mẹ, Mẹ chỉ nhận một danh xưng duy nhất là nữ tì của Chúa.

Đức hồng y nói tiếp: “Phong trào Đạo binh Đức Mẹ được thành lập 70 năm trên đất nước Việt Nam. Con đường cứu độ của Thiên Chúa không cần binh hùng tướng mạnh, vàng bạc giàu có mà Ngài chỉ cần những con người tầm thường bé nhỏ, hiểu biết nông cạn nhưng có một đức tin vào Thiên Chúa. Và mãi mãi Ngài không thay đổi lựa chọn, như những hội viên Legio của Đức Mẹ, chúng ta được mời gọi sống khiêm nhường, làm nhưng công việc tầm thường hằng này, còn đâu hãy để Chúa thực hiện những việc của Ngài”.

Cuối bài giảng, Đức hồng y mời gọi cộng đoàn sống chứng nhân theo gương các Thánh Tử Đạo. Các vị đã can trường, trung kiên theo Chúa đến cùng dù gặp khó khăn gian khổ hay bị thịt nát xương tan, các ngài cũng không khước từ đức tin của mình vào Thiên Chúa. Ngài cầu chúc mỗi người, đặc biệt là những thành viên Legio hãy có một đức tin mới, nhiệt huyết mới để đem Chúa đi vào lòng đời và vang danh Đức Mẹ khắp nơi trên toàn cõi đất. - Tóm bài từ Tgp Hà Nội

Án tử hình ư?

Ngày 1/8 vừa qua, Đtc. Phanxicô đã phê chuẩn một sửa đổi mới về đoạn 2267 của Sách Giáo lý Công giáo, theo đó “đã xuất hiện một sự hiểu biết mới về ý nghĩa của hình phạt tử hình do nhà nước áp đặt” theo đó “án tử hình là không thể chấp nhận được.” Sau đây là tóm tắt nhận định vế sự thay đổi này.

Có thể nói, việc bãi bỏ hoàn toàn án tử hình là một kết quả suy tư dựa trên tiền đề căn bản của việc tôn trọng sự sống thánh thiêng của con người, rằng: sự sống con người cần được tôn trọng từ khi thụ thai cho đến chết tự nhiên; mà án tử hình là một việc giết người do tác động từ phía con người. Điều này đi ngược lại với xác tín của Giáo hội: Thiên Chúa là Đấng cầm quyền sinh tử.

Thật ra, từ trước đến nay các chính quyền dân sự đều thi hành án tử hình nhân danh công bằng, công ích và trật tự xã hội. Qua nhiều triều đại giáo hoàng, các ngài đã lên tiếng bảo vệ sự sống cho phạm nhân nhưng còn nhân nhượng do giới hạn về việc bảo vệ an ninh các quốc gia. Ngày nay, các thiết bị hiện đại tạo nên những hệ thống tinh vi nhằm kiểm soát hoạt động của mọi người cách riêng các phạm nhân thì việc các tù nhân không thể tự tung tự tác mà sát hại dân lành đã được khắc phục tối đa; đồng nghĩa với việc án tử hình trở nên không còn cần thiết nữa mà nói mạnh mẽ như lời của Đức Phanxicô: án tử hình không thể chấp nhận được; vì lẽ nhân phẩm của người đó không bị mất ngay cả đương sự đã phạm thứ tội rất nghiêm trọng.

Con người được dựng nên giống hình ảnh Thiên Chúa, nghĩa là luôn mang trong mình “mầm thiện” cần được phát huy tối đa trong ơn nghĩa Ngài. Mầm thiện ấy có thể ví như một loại bụi gai bốc cháy mà không bị thiêu rụi cho đến khi sự sống ấy không còn nữa! ..
