Sunday Readings
THIS WEEK’S: Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading —(Isaiah 49:3, 5-6)
Responsorial Psalm —(Psalm 40)
Second Reading — (1 Corinthians 1:1-3)
Gospel — (John 1:29-34)
NEXT WEEK’S: Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading — The lands of
“Zebulun” and “Napthali” were parts of
the Northern Kingdom of Israel that had
been invaded by and subsumed into the
Assyrian empire. Isaiah recalled the pain
and shame of that conquest and
prophesies a future of restoration and glory
for these lands that eventually became the
land of Galilee, west of the Jordan River.
(Isaiah 8:23-9:3)
Responsorial Psalm —“The Lord is
my light and my salvation.” (Psalm 27)
Second Reading — Paul is far away in
Ephesus when, from various sources, he
receives the distressing news about Corinth.
He is not concerned that some project of
his is being undone, but that the
Corinthians have lost sight of the meaning
of their Baptism. They were baptized in
Christ’s name, not in Paul’s or that of any
of the other early Christian leaders, includ-
ing Peter. Only Christ died for them, and
only He rose from the grave. It is the
Cross of Jesus that saves us, not any
human effort. Paul affirms that truth. (1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17)
Gospel — A great light comes to the
lands of Zebulun and Naphtali. Scripture is
fulfilled, but the only one who understands
that truth has just been cast into prison.
Ironically, the imprisonment of John sets
the stage for Jesus’ proclamation of the
reign of God. Jesus moves to Capernaum
in Galilee, a land of prophecy and
fulfillment, and also a land of the Gentiles.
Here among Gentiles, not in Judea where
He was born, Jesus begins His ministry. (Matthew 4:12-23)

Monday, January 23rd is the Day of
Prayer for the Legal Protection of
Unborn Children, which is the
observance of the 44th anniversary of
Roe v. Wade. Join millions of people
by giving witness on that day: pray
especially for an end to abortion; fast,
do penance and perform works of mer-
cy; make the trek to Olympia to attend
the Mass & March for Life. Bearing
witness to our Faith in any of these
ways is cooperation with God’s grace,
and it makes amends for abortion.
Monday, January 23rd Parish offices/churches
will be closed this day
9:30am – Mass at Marcus
Pavilion – St. Martin University,
Lacey
Following Mass – Assemble at the
capitol – Olympia (Those wishing
to march assemble near the
Winged Victory statue; otherwise
assemble at the capitol steps.)
Noon - short walk from the statue
to the capitol steps followed by the
rally for life
The rally is not long: less than 2 hours.
Dress for the weather – it is typically
cold and windy/rainy. Be prepared for
extended standing.
We hope to see you there!!

From Anneene Catterson — Anneene would like to extend her grati-tude to the parish family for making Santa’s Workshop possible for the stu-dents this past December. We had some generous donors this year and we would like to let them know how much joy they brought to the students. Thank you to everyone who helped make the workshop such a success.
From the QA School Staff & Students — We would like to thank Mrs. Anneene Catterson for her months of work in getting together all the surplus for Santa’s Workshop. It was a one woman show for the most part and Anneene went one step further to make it so very special for the students. Thank you Anneene!

Thérèse: The Story of a Soul is a one-of-a-kind Catholic theater production that brings her
story to life. Played by actress Audrey Ahern, St. Thérèse speaks directly to the audience
with warmth, humor, and insight. At the same time, the production is not a sentimental
portrait of the Little Flower. Rather, it presents Thérèse as a strong, passionate young
woman who had the courage to throw herself whole heartedly into the furnace of God’s
love. Thérèse: The Story of a Soul is accompanied by a soul-stirring score composed by
Sister Clare Sokol, a Carmelite nun. Please plan to attend this stirring presentation!
