Lenten Soup Suppers at Both Parishes

Ash Wednesday is February 14th

which begins the

Lenten season. In

this season of

Lent we embrace

prayer, fasting,

and alms giving. Join us for soup

suppers and Friday Devotions

each Friday during this Lenten

season as one way to observe

these three key penitential

practices of Lent.

The soup suppers will be served

every Friday during Lent from 5:00

to 6:00PM in the parish hall fol-

lowed by Friday devotions in the

church. The suppers consist of

simple meatless soups.

Parish groups or individual

families are invited to sign up

to sponsor a soup supper on

one of the Fridays during Lent.

All alms given at the soup suppers

will go to CRS Rice Bowl.

Please contact either parish office

to sign up for a Friday or with any

questions. Spots are filling quickly,

so call soon!

THIS WEEK’S: 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading —(Deuteronomy 18:15-20)

Responsorial Psalm —(Psalm 95)

Second Reading —

(1 Corinthians 7:32-35)

Gospel —(Mark 1:21-28)

NEXT WEEK’S: 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading— The main question in the

book of Job is: why do innocent people suffer?

The plot of the story is established in the open-

ing twelve verses of this lengthy book: Job, a

wise man “blameless and upright” with many

blessings from God, including children and

wealth, is suddenly put to the test by Satan.

Will Job remain strong in his faith when all is

lost and suffering ensues?

In this reading we hear of Job’s reaction to one

of his friends who attempts to comfort and

console Job, offering various sound and rational

explanation for his recent misfortunes. But Job

finds no relief in Eliphaz’s words; his pain is too

great. “I shall not see happiness again.”

At the end of the book, after Job’s deep ques-

tioning and God’s thought-provoking reply, Job

does find resolution and reward.

(Job 7:1-4,6-7)

Responsorial Psalm—“Praise the Lord,

who heals the brokenhearted.” (Psalm 147)

Second Reading—In this section of Paul’s

letter to the Corinthians he defends his

apostleship. While Paul does have the lawful

right to charge a fee for his preaching, he

chooses not to, because he views his preaching

of the Gospel more as a “stewardship” author-

ized by the Lord than an occupation deserving a

just wage. In fact, Paul’s sense of mission is so

great that his outreach must include all people.

This demands extreme measures, even if, in the

end, he can only reach some: “I have become

all things to all, to save at least some.” Paul’s

life is completely attuned to his work for, and

his participation in, the Gospel.

(1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23)

Gospel—Mark begins his Gospel account

with a strong emphasis on Jesus’s “powerful

deeds”. There are four movements to this

reading: the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law,

evening healings of all the sick and possessed in

Capernaum, Jesus at prayer, and Jesus’s depar-

ture from Capernaum. We hear from Jesus

himself the main “purpose” for His public minis-

try: to “preach” the Gospel to the “nearby vil-

lages” of the lower Galilee.

(Mark 1:29-39)

The Burning of the Palms

Palm leaves obtained from church on Palm

Sunday are blessed, and therefore are holy

objects. Once an object is blessed it is consid-

ered to be in the service of God and therefore

should be treated with respect.

We will have a Burning of the Palms service at

each parish:

St. Joseph Parish, Sunday, February

11th following the 10:30AM Mass

Queen of Angels Parish, Tuesday,

February 13th following the

6:00PM Mass

Please drop off your blessed palms in the re-

ceptacles at the back of the churches by end

of business, Friday, February 9th. The ashes

from these burned palms will be used at

Masses on Ash Wednesday.

PARISH COMMISSIONS REPORT

Each week, one of our newly formed commissions will submit a current activity/information report for the bulletin. We start with the Communication Commission.

The Communication Commission, in coopera-tion with the parish office administration, has been delegated to promote and strengthen the ongoing internal and external communications for our parishes.

Currently, we are installing bulletin boards in the St. Joseph parish hall for various groups in the parish. A long term goal is to help parish groups promote their activities and commit-tees. A future gathering is being planned to assist groups with current resources and obtain feedback on communication needs.

The next Communication Commission meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 19th at 10:30AM in the Queen of Angels Mary Room.

Middle School News

The middle school recently finished writing literary analysis essays. The students compared pieces of litera-ture they had read to criteria and wrote about how the literature did, or did not, measure up. They were required to include quotes from the pieces to support the claims they made.

In social studies, the sixth grade is learning about the Indus River Valley civilization of ancient India. They have learned about how the geography of the area fostered this civilization. As this area was also the birthplace of two of the five major world religions, they have also learned about the similarities and differences these religions share.

The middle school designed Valen-tines and Valentine bags. These bags will be distributed by Saint Vincent de Paul to the seniors at the Manor for Valentines Day.
