There is no doubt we all work in an industry that is truly global, and with our own events on 5 continents, we plan to bring you a glimpse, on a regular basis, of what is happening and how we can really add value to your business. The Diary will help you understand the difference between each of our events, the opportunities they deliver for your future planning strategies and how you can enter new markets with our help. With a global audience of over 20,000 attending our shows every year, we want to help you keep up to date with not only the exciting developments in all our shows but also with the latest industry hot topics, and interviews from around the world.

In this first issue we meet the team from Business Travel Market, our fantastic new addition to the family. For those who are interested in what is happening in the industry “down under” we bring you a review of AIMe in Melbourne that celebrated a groundbreaking 20th anniversary last month, then read about what’s planned for GIBTM in Abu Dhabi at the end of March.

In future issues we’ll find out more about the host cities for each of our events, the critical role they play and also feature columns from some industry personalities including our very own eric Rozenberg, non-executive chair for IBTM events and Immediate Past Chairman of MPI.

But it’s not only about us – we also want to hear from you so send us your news – we’d love to hear your thoughts, your views or your hot industry topics and we’ll try and include as much as we can.

Also, take a minute to look at the revamped IBTM events website www.ibtmevents.com

FIVE EVENTS FIVE CONTINENTS FIVE STARS sPRinG 2011 The DIARY 2

Reed Travel exhibitions’ Fiona Jeffery who is World Travel Market Chairman has been appointed an Offi cer of the Order of the British empire (OBe) in Queen elizabeth II New Year’s honours list.

Fiona was awarded the OBe for her services to the travel and tourism industry during her 26 years at WTM, the leading global event for the travel industry.

In 1998, Fiona launched travel industry water aid charity Just a Drop which aims to reduce child mortality caused by unsafe water. The charity has undertaken more than 92 water aid projects and helped more than 1.5 million children and their families in 29 countries.

The IBTM events Portfolio has supported Just A Drop for many years through initiatives at the events, including helping fund a project through donations via the CeO Summit at eIBTM. All exhibitors at the events have the option to make a donation to Just A Drop when booking their stand.

In addition, IBTM events are making a donation to Just A Drop for every survey completed for their IBTM Global Research Study.

As a long-term advocate of sustainable travel, Fionas achievements also include creating World Responsible Tourism Day in 2008. The 2011 New Year’s honours list was chosen based on the UK’s Prime Minister David Cameron’s Big Society initiative, which is focused on people making a real difference to communities through volunteering, fundraising, social action and philanthropy.

“I was genuinely stunned but it’s a great honour and I’ve received lots of wonderful emails and texts over the last week,” Fiona said. “The best thing is being able to share it with so many colleagues both at Reed exhibitions and within the travel industry who have all played their part over the last 26 years and also the many people who have also latterly helped support and grow Just a Drop.”

The SITE Foundation and MPI Foundation have just released the fi ndings of a joint study into the convergence of meetings and incentive

travel.

The study asked participants to comment on whether their respective roles as either an incentive travel programme

planner or meeting planner was changing or potentially overlapping.

Key fi ndings were that more than a third said their personal involvement in either area had increased and 60% said that they expected this to increase in the future.

The main reasons for this were tied to the economic environment with 52% stating that budget was one of the main drivers for this trend and 47% indicating that it was due to public perception.

The full results of the study can be found at www.siteglobal.com and www.mpifoundation.org

Corporate Travel education to feature at all IBTM Global events IBTM have just signed a landmark agreement with the Association of Corporate Travel executives (ACTe) for them to provide education tracks at all the events.

The agreement will see ACTe provide four sessions at GIBTM in Abu Dhabi covering ‘Optimising Travel Payment Systems in the Middle east’ and ‘Building and Implementing a Travel Policy’, as well as dedicated tracks at AIBTM, AIMe, BTM, CIBTM and eIBTM.

ACTe will be encouraging their members to attend the events in their regions and each show will also bring in dedicated corporate travel hosted Buyers.

Key topics will include procurement, optimising business travel spend and business travel technology.

We are delighted to be able to confirm a strategic

partnership with ACTe who have global members within the business travel industry. Although we have had the BT as part of all our show names for many years, the key focus has not been business travel in its purest form. This partnership provides us with the opportunity to provide first class education for corporate travel buyers and therefore provide additional reasons for them to attend our events.

CRAIG MOYES, PORTFOLIO DIRECTOR IBTM GLOBAL EVENTS

About ACTEThe Association of Corporate Travel executives (ACTe), founded in 1988, is a leading non-profit organisation that serves and advances the global business travel industry in 102 different countries. For more than 20 years, ACTe has continued to fulfill its vision of uniting travel executives around the world, providing them with up-to-date news, knowledge, beneficial research findings and networking opportunities. The education of ACTe members infiltrates to more than 12 million business travelers worldwide. From corporate buyers to agencies and suppliers, all sectors of the industry are granted equal membership. ACTe has representatives in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Australasia, Canada, europe, Latin America, Mexico, Middle east and the United States. To join ACTe, or for more information, please visit www.acte.org.

Seven year cycle of business travelThe seven year cycle. That’s how Ron DiLeo, executive Director of ACTe described the peaks and troughs of the business travel industry speaking at AIMe recently.

From the absolute lows, like 2009 when the economy was failing and the first cutbacks are on meetings and incentive trips. To the few years where business travel takes a backseat until the CeO starts wondering where the new business is and the economy struggles further because MICe events are no longer injecting huge sums of money.

Then gradually, people start travelling again, networking and building up their business contacts – which is where Ron sees the industry today:

‘Around three years into the cycle with a number of great years ahead.’

Jo-Anne KellewayCEO & Founder, The Info Salons GroupAustralia1 What was your career path and how has it led you to where you are today? My first degree was a Bachelor of Arts. I swapped to the Advertising Department of the newspaper I was working at and was one of the people selected to study “Computer Science” by Rupert Murdoch. After finishing the degree I decided that was the path I wanted to take. Realising that I needed business skills I did a Masters in Business Studies & Marketing to assist me in growing the clip-art business. The company was very successful and was sold so I left Australia to travel the world. I ended up in Paris where I worked for a registration company called “Info Salons”. It was this business that I brought back to Sydney at the end of 1989.

2 What are the main challenges you face in your current role?1. People - My main challenge is finding excellent people who want to work in the exhibitions & events industry. 2. Technology - The other major challenge is the constantly changing world of technology. We are technology providers so we need to keep one step ahead to keep our applications progressive and yet still be relevant to the communities we serve.

3 What are your top 3 suggestions for women who want to get to the top?1. There will be lots of hard work and commitment so be prepared to do “the long hours”2. Love what you’re doing so that you always look forward to going to work3. Don’t worry about being a woman – just worry about being yourself.

4 How do you spend your spare time?I have 2 beautiful daughters 17 years & 16 years old. I have a wonderful supportive husband who is a “stay at home Dad” and is the main carer for our kids. I am

very lucky to have all the joys of children without having to give up my work. I think it’s

pretty unusual to be lucky enough to have both.

An Interview With . . .Charlie Banks

Q What is ISO 20121?ISO 20121 event Sustainability is a management system standard that has been created for the implementation of sustainability in the events industry. It is a standard that is specific to the event industry so it can be used by suppliers, venues, event organisers, caterers and following the framework of the standard will mean that sustainability (economic, environmental and social impacts) is considered at every decision point in the planning of an event.

Q How was the standard developed? ISO 20121 was developed after BS8901, the British standard for sustainability in events, was being used around the world. The development of an ISO happens when all counties’ standards bodies are asked if they would like to be involved in the development of an international version of a national standard. Over 30 countries were involved in the development of ISO 20121 including Japan, China, Canada, USA, Sweden, Germany, Spain and also a number of liaison bodies and associations from the industry such as MPI. Fiona Pelham, our Managing Director and the IBTM Sustainability Advisor was the Chair of the Standard.

Q When is ISO 20121 going to be launched?ISO 20121 is due to be launched in the summer of 2012 in time for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Q Why is the standard important for the event industry?ISO 20121 is important because it is an internationally recognised framework and was created by the event industry for the event industry. The adoption of the ISO standard will change the event industry because it will support them to consider their economic, environmental and social impacts.

Q Who is implementing the standard currently? There are a number of organisations that are leading with implementing ISO 20121 and these organisations started by implementing the British Standard BS8901. For example eIBTM, one of the IBTM shows, has been implementing BS8901 for a number of years now and will be ready to make some changes to ensure their management system is ready for ISO 20121. This is especially relevant as eIBTM is based in Barcelona and their attendees travel from around the world to visit so it makes sense that they would be implementing an international standard to showcase their sustainability leadership.

As the “British Standard BS8901 - Sustainability for the events Industry” becomes an International Standard we ask our Sustainability Advisor and expert, Charlie Banks to explain its importance.

Page 15: Welcome To Our World - Ibtm events€¦ · extension of your brain, helping you remember anything and everything that happens in your life. From notes to ideas to snapshots to recordings,

Q What is the future of sustainability in the event industry? The future of sustainability in the event industry is definitely increasing in importance, in 2012 there are two major international frameworks being launched,

ISO 20121 and the Global Reporting Initiative’s event Organiser Sector Supplement. These

international frameworks have been created for the event industry

and these frameworks are recognised outside of the event industry so, leading sustainability practitioners and governance bodies all know ISO and GRI to be best practice, so we may find that there is an increase in pressure from those bodies external to the event industry to start using these systems and frameworks.

AIMe started on an upbeat and positive note when Phil Ruthven from IBISWorld took the stage at AIMe’s Business events Forum on Tuesday 21 February to share a forecast for the meetings
