Full-Year 1A courses for Chinese, French, and Spanish are designed for students who have never studied the language before. Each quarter typically focuses on one unit of study, offering an introduction to the language at a moderate pace. Their themes cover topics such as alphabet, numbers, classes, getting acquainted, foods, and family.
Chinese 1A/B-Immersion is a semester course. Each quarter focuses on two units of study, as is the pace in high school. This particular course is designed to transition students who were in the Elementary Chinese Immersion Program into a traditional World Languages course.
Semester courses in Spanish and French as well as higher levels of Chinese are not available until 7th Grade. If a student has had previous instruction in a language prior to attending Hoover, he/she may arrange to take a placement test before 7th Grade Course Registration to determine if a higher level of the language would be more appropriate. World Language placement tests are arranged through the Counseling Office.
World Languages
IM
World Language courses are considered high school courses.
6th Grade students who are enrolled in a Full-Year course will receive 0.5 high school credit with a passing grade at the end of the school year. The same is true for students who elect to begin World Languages in 7th Grade with a Full-Year course.
6th Grade students who are enrolled in Chinese 1A/B-Immersion will receive 1.0 high school credit with a passing grade at the end of the school year. The same is true for students who elect to begin World Languages in 7th Grade with a Semester course
High school courses successfully completed while in middle school will be included in the GPA calculation at the beginning of Grade 9 to earn credit.

Physical Education taught for 3 Quarters in grades 6, 7 & 8.
The Hoover Middle School PE uniform is strongly encouraged (students must change into designated PE clothes). There will be information in the summer letter as to where to purchase PE clothes for your children.
Students participate in a variety of invasion, net/wall, and hitting/striking games with a focus on teaching sport concepts, skills and tactics. In addition, fitness, weight training, and track and field skills are included in all physical education classes.
