(PROFILE) Did you know Amtrak is the country’s only national passenger rail provider? Amtrak serves over 85,000 passengers a day - close to 32 million people every year - from 500 stations spread across 46 states, Washington, D.C., and three Canadian provinces. Our team here at Salesforce had the chance to sit down with several members of Amtrak’s leadership team and hear how their enterprise-wide transformation effort moves America faster with a digital, modern mission.   (MISSION) Amtrak’s mission is, “Delivering intercity transportation with superior safety, customer service and financial excellence.” (PAIN) The primary challenge in front Amtrak was how to take this railroad company and move it to technology that allows its customers, partners, and employees to be happy and productive. Amtrak’s leadership team decided to focus on simple, intuitive, and scalable technology options, paired with an outcome-oriented mindset, to drive three objectives: Business process simplification and consolidation; Experience enhancement and optimized total cost of ownership; and Enable pervasive mobility. (SOLUTION) Built on Salesforce, Amtrak IT developed the TOPS (Train Operations) app to track train servicing. Supervisors can log when their team is done with a given service, alert their counterparts of any issues or delays, and pull reports that capture performance stats, common disruptions, and more. The TOPS app opened up communications and visibility across the entire train turnover process, making it easier to understand, quantify, and replicate best practices that could otherwise get lost in an expansive workplace. (BEST PRACTICES) Amtrak demonstrates five best practices in the organization’s work with the cloud: Make the customer experience the #1 priority Develop an alliance between IT and line of business by starting with business requirements resulting from customer-centric priorities Leverage subject-matter experts via in-house and external partnerships Find a platform that meets key success criteria centered on making the life easier for the conductor, the engineer, and passengers And use a co-exist strategy that builds engagement layers on top of the ‘old’ platforms to support employees steeped in legacy system knowledge as well as newer hires familiar with modern approaches. Its job market, affordability, and quality of life recently earned Denver the #2 spot on the 2017 U.S. News and News and World Report Best Places to Live. ��“The mayor would like to create a customer experience that makes people say ‘I can’t believe this is government,’” said Christine Binnicker, Deputy CIO for technology services for the City and County of Denver. ���Challenge:��At the same time, “citizens were demanding that they interact with us just like they do with businesses they engage with,” said Binnicker. This made delivering an unprecedented customer experience — to more people, with the same budget and resources — that much more challenging. ���Solution:�Denver decided to move its systems to the cloud. The team re-platformed its backend case management system on Salesforce Service Cloud, making it easier for employees to move work and action items through the lifecycle, faster. ��The team also deployed its 311 system on Service Cloud, opening up more communication channels like mobile ticketing, web chat, and more. ��In addition, Denver was able to use Salesforce's built-in analytics to pull more data and insights out of its service activity, helping the team “determine where we should be dedicating our resources, and what things we should be working on to make it easier for our residents to connect with their government,” said Binnicker. ��Denver's cloud deployment connected people, process, and data in a way that focused more attention on the needs and sustainability of the community. ���Results and Impact:�Modern employee productivity tools helped the city shave 23 seconds off the average call time, reduce duplicate data entries, and save money. ��It also transferred cases from (expensive) phone lines to other communication channels; online case volume increased by 68%, helping the team scale its efforts and meet more customer inquiries. ��There were financial benefits as well: “In one agency, our Department of Public Works, we’ve saved more than $7,000 by moving just 4% of cases to digital in the first six months,” said Binnicker.�

CASE STUDY: https://www.salesforce.com/customer-success-stories/wyoming-office-state-lands/ �SUMMARY Profile:��WY OSLI is a revenue-generating agency that manages the State’s collective 7.3 million acres of trust land–land that was issued in a grant by the Federal Government upon statehood back in 1890 with the stipulation that each and every acre would be held in a trust dedicated to support Wyoming’s public schools and institutions. ���Challenge:�WY OSLI generates revenue from a variety of activities, each bringing a different set of requirements: wind farm, mining, tourism, etc. As that became increasingly meticulous, state leadership set forth an initiative prioritizing digital records, digital processes, and digitally-driven automation. ��WY OSLI took this as a call-to-action, using it as a reason to modernize the forms, fields, and processes critical to its mission. ���Solution:�The team developed Surface Land Asset Management System (SLAMS), a portfolio of applications—or, as Wyoming describes it, an integrated application library—that manages properties and processes using custom workflow rules. ��This library pulls the best-n-brightest capabilities from the Salesforce Platform: purpose-built applications, out-of-the-box mobility, built-in collaboration capabilities, and native integrations.��It also pulls in the best-n-brightest from a strategic perspective: by taking a platform “library” approach, WY OSLI established a foundation that makes it easier to launch new apps as a part of a cohesive strategy than to launch them as one-offs, mitigating risk that results from duplicate work streams, offline data, and isolated learnings. ���Results and Impact:�The WY OSLI team was working smarter: “We can track our performance all day long, but our success is ultimately subject to the whim of several industries in the state,” said Jason Crowder, Assistant Director, WY OSLI. “If those industries go down, then our revenues go down.” But that’s not what happened. ��“We can see through the system that land uses are all on the increase. And they’re on the increase even after a time period when coal mining in this state all but stopped for a while. We had no oil rigs drilling wells for a solid year and a half. Yet our revenues from ancillary activities were increasing.” ��There was also a culture shift: “For someone who is just moving paper from one pile to another, it’s really easy to feel insignificant. When you open up the world for that person to see the big picture...you really empower them. They can see—not just be told—how broad our mission is and how important their work is to that,” said Ben Bump, Assistant Director, WY OSLI.�

The Department's work streamlines the RFx buying process and creates economies of scale, making better use of Texan tax dollars. Its also helps fellow departments and agencies keep more focus on the missions at hand, instead of the more tactical work that surrounds the mission. ���Challenge:�As essential as the procurement process is, the operations behind it are still one of the most costly and time consuming government models, largely because many agencies still use a paper-based process for issuing RFPs and evaluating vendor proposals.��In a recent survey, the Center for Digital Government found that 31% of respondents do not have a portal or eProcurement system where they can post bids and RFPs online. Instead, they have manual systems with 100+ steps in the procurement process, soaking up time and energy that impacts government's ability to execute. ��But not in Texas.���Solution:�TX DIR developed BidStamp — an eProcurement application on the Salesforce Lightning Platform that took its paper-based procurement process digital, automating workflows and streamlining solicitations and contracts throughout the procurement lifecycle:�Community Cloud powers BidStamp's vendor information portal, giving the right people access to the right information on both sides of the procurement process. Digital scorecards—set up using pre-configured workflow rules that quantify a prospective bidder's applicability based on a set of objective criteria—help the DIR staff make informed purchasing decisions faster. The ability to integrate with third-party systems (like FedBizOps) helped reduced data duplication and increased organizational consistency across the agency. ��Results and Impact:�BidStamp was fast and cost-effective, key to the financial stewardship inherent to TX DIR's mission. It's success inspired over 25 new app projects across the state, helping Texas manage everything from asset tracking, to budgeting, to help desks, portfolios, and more. ��“If you want state agencies to move to 21st century technology, you need to keep it simple to implement and use,” says Todd Kimbriel, Deputy Executive Director and State CIO, “so we adopted a Salesforce first policy for our development team.” ���

What’s Next• Training the next generation of Salesforce Administrators

• BosmaForce is being taught by veterans TJ McElroy and Richard Holleman, both of whom are among the first blind U.S. veterans to become Salesforce Certified

• The class will be taught with Trailhead, using assistive technologies like Job Access With Speech (JAWS) screen readers and ZoomText

• McElroy and Holleman developed the curriculum in close partnership with Salesforce accessibility specialist Adam Rodenbeck, who is also a former Bosma Enterprises employee

• The pilot class includes seven students from Indiana and Illinois, all of whom are blind or visually impaired
