From your Pastor’s Desk… Second Collection this weekend: The second collection this

weekend is for Deficit Reduction. As we come to the end of the Fiscal Year on June 30th, we need your help to close our deficit.

Last year we finished $79 in the black. Help us finish in the black this year.

Parish Festival: Thank you to all who made the Festival a great success. We great weather and the number seemed to be up all day long. There will be a complete report in the bulletin when we get final numbers for the day. Ireland??: The deadline for the Ireland trip is coming up quick. A decision has to be made in a couple weeks. If you have been on the fence about going, now is the time to register. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me or go on line at: http://www.magitravelinc.com/the-best-of-ireland.html

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi): This weekend the Church focuses on the Mystery of the Eucharist and the great gift Jesus left the Church, the gift of His Body and Blood. In the Gospel reading this weekend from Mark, we hear the story of the Institution of the Eucharist as the Last Supper. Later this Summer (July 26th – August 23rd) we will have 5 weeks of Gospel readings from the 6th Chapter of John, Jesus’s Bread of Life Discourse. I will go more deeply into the Eucharist in this space on those weeks. As mentioned last week, I want to continue my discussion of the crucifix in our Church and the Eucharistic images that are there.

St. Pius X is considered the Eucharistic Pope. He is the one who lowered the age for First Communion and also encouraged frequent reception of the Eucharist. For this reason, we wanted a particularly Eucharistic image of Jesus for our crucifix.

Above the head of Jesus we find that we don’t have the usual: INRI. Instead there is an image of a Eucharistic Host. Emanating from the Host are rays. These rays are similar to the ones that on the Altar of St. Cecilia’s Cathedral. This image unites us to the Altar of the Cathedral, the Mother Church of the Diocese. As we celebrate every mass we pray that we are in unity with our pope and bishop, this image reminds again that we are united to

the Eucharistic Sacrifice offered by our bishop at the Cathedral. If you look closely at the image of Jesus on the Cross, you

will notice that the nail marks are in His hands and feet and His side is pierced. There are not nails depicted, nor is there any sign of blood or bruising. Jesus is the Pure Lamb of God that is offered. The wounds are there but it is as if the body has been washed so as to be a pure sacrifice to the Father.

Look at the hand of Jesus on the cross. They are not flat against the wood of the cross. They are turned up. This is the way we are invited to pray as we offer the Our Father. It is also the prayer position the priest takes when offering prayers on behalf of

himself and the community. This gesture of the arms outstretched and the hands turned up in offering is an ancient prayer gesture of offering. Jesus is offering up Himself on the cross as a gift to the Father and to us.

Our crucifix is a unique piece of art made for this community. We are first and foremost a community united by the Eucharist. Every time we look and reflect on the cross, may it remind us that we are a Eucharistic People.

Discussions with the Pastor: You are invited to come and visit with an idea, concern, question, or if you would just like to talk. Feel free to come alone or with others. This week I will be available

Friday, June 12th, from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm and Saturday, June 13th from 9:00 am to 10:00 am.

“Good News” From St. Pius X/St. Leo School

Many years ago we were fortunate to have a St. Pius X parishioner establish a scholarship program to honor those graduating eighth graders who plan to attend a Catholic high school. These scholarships are determined by averaging the students’ seventh and eighth years' grades. Those receiving the scholarships have the top seven academic scholastic averages and are going on to a Catholic high school from each parish. The students from St. Pius X Parish who received these scholarships are as follows in ranking from the highest to the seventh highest: Joseph McAuliffe, Sarah Gerards, James Townley, Matthew Baysa, Marti Brohman, Rebecca Townley and Alex Papa. At the time of the establishment of this St. Pius X Parish Scholarship, we were thrilled that St. Leo Parish decided to match this scholarship program. The students from St. Leo Parish who are receiving these scholarships are as follows in ranking from the highest to the seventh highest: P.J. Mooney, Hannah Rodricks, Jonathan Schroeder, Daniel Noon, Daniel Richter, Jolie Peal and Paul Weist. So many of our students work so hard to gain high academic achievement. We are proud of all of them, but, special congratulations to these fourteen parish scholarship winners!

This year was the ninth year of another very special scholarship that is given annually by the Bernie and Pat Kobza Family. The Bernie Jackson ’98 Memorial Scholarship is given to an 8th grade graduate who will be attending Creighton Prep High School the coming school year since Bernie Jackson was a 2002 graduate of Creighton Prep. It was given to Michael Sitti because of his positive attitude, excellent work ethic and caring approach to others. We are so thankful to the Kobza’s for this wonderful scholarship in honor and memory of their grandson.

We’d like to congratulate Kaji Loro on being this year's recipient of the Catholic Daughters - Court Mary Immaculate #2182's Imelda Nolan Scholarship! Only one of these scholarships is awarded each year to an Omaha 8th grade girl who currently attends a Catholic grade school and who will be entering 9th grade in the fall in a Catholic High School; so this is a great honor for Kaji!

St. Pius X / St. Leo School is accepting registrations for all grades pre-school through grade 8 for the next school year. Please call the school office at 551-6667 for information and a tour.

Special Note: The school office will be closed at different times during the summer. When our office is open, our office hours during the day will be 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. with time off for lunch. It’s always wise, during the summer to call ahead to make sure we are in the office at the particular time you’d like to come. Our school office number is 402-551-6667.
