WelcometoStonetheCrowsFestivalAs Mayor of Wagga Wagga, it is again my greatpleasure to welcome the Stone the Crows Festivalback to our City for its seventh annual event.StonetheCrowsisagreatattractionbringingpeoplefromalloverAustraliatoenjoyourhospitality,richcultural heritage and a wealth of fantasticattractions.This year’s event will again be held at the Australian Clay TargetAssociationGrounds, now also the permanent home ofStone theCrows.Theprogram is again jampackedandwill featuremanyexciting eventsfor festival goers including concerts, games, entertainment, workshops,seminarsand–ofcourse–camaraderie!AsMayoroftheCity,IthanktheorganisersoftheFestivalforworkingsohardtomakethiseventastandoutforourregion’ssocialcalendar.ThethreeChiefCrowsandtheirbandofamazingvolunteerswillensureyouallleavethiseventwithmanywonderfulmemories.Once again, a very warm Wagga Wagga welcome and I wish you anenjoyableandmemorableexperienceatthe2019StonetheCrowsFestival.WarmRegards

Welcome to the Annual Easter Gathering of the Flock, another week ofcamaraderie, new friends, entertainment, games, woodwork, craft andmore-allthethingsthatmakeourFestivalunique.

The2019FestivalincludesANZACDay,sosomeoftheentertainmenthasanANZACtheme–wehaveLittlePattieandtheSwingSistersandotherappropriate events and seminars, including the special ANZAC DayCommemorativeServicetoremember(withsong,poetryandeven‘TwoUp’)thesacrificesmadeinmanytheatresofwaroveracenturyofconflict.

WewelcomebackoldfavouritesDarrenCarrandMikeMcClellan,alongwith Simon Fisher-King, The Girls of ABBA andDonna Boyd.We alsohave the artistry of Marcus Holden, Bradley Eustace, Jackie Kerin,SarahDePasquale,GregoryNorth, JimHaynesandGrantLuhrs - andourowntalentedregulars.

Activities? Where to start? The Signature event, the Stoning of theCrows, follows the markets on Monday. Gather in theWagga CaravansGamesArenaby2pmandBYOchair.

Games include Ladder Golf, Disc Bowls and Petanque which arecompetitiveyetsocial.Forthosewhoaren’tquitesoathleticallyinclined,on open day Monday there is a variation of disc bowls called ‘Bruce’sRules’,soonceyouhavecorneredallthespecialsatthemarketsyoucanhaveagoatthattoo.

Want to have a try at something new, come and LEARN TO PLAYDISCBOWLS. On Friday at 1.00pm we will have the courts open andexperiencedplayerswill be there to teachyouhow toplay, scoringandbasic rules.At2.30pmyoucan spendsome timepracticingandyoucanput your name down for the Social Disc Bowls competition, you don’tneedateam,aswewillbemakingupteamswithanexperiencedplayerand two beginners or novices. This gives everyone the same chance towinandgethelpwithhowtoplaythis fungame.OnSundaymorningat8.30amextraentriesfortheSocialDiscBowlswillbetakenandthedrawdonewithplaytocommenceat9.30am.

TheAustralianDiscBowlsChampionshipsareopentoeveryonebutfarmoreseriousinnature.WaggaCaravanCentrereturnsassponsoroftheChampionship Disc Bowls and Disc Bowls international provides theequipment for all discbowls games.All setswill be available for sale atthegamesarenaorthroughtheCrowMerchandiseteam.

DedicatedvolunteertutorshaveorganisedkitsforbothCraftyCrowsandDaddyDayCare.Bothareunisexactivities–sodon’tbeshyifyouwantto do art classes or woodwork and think only girls/guys can do one –everyoneiswelcometoparticipate.WhetheryouaremakingaWhirly-Gigof Charlie Crow or a butterfly shaped wooden box, ticking off whipmaking fromyourbucket list, learning topaintwithacrylicsor todraw,crochet,sew,knitordiamondpainting,therearenumerousopportunitiestoexpandyourskillsets.Checkoutthetimetableformoredetailsofwhatyoucando.Againabigthankyoutoourtutors.

The Cocoa Club - Bedtime Stories in the Music Caw-Ner Club Housefollow the main concert each night Friday toWednesday. This year allCocoaClubattendeesreceiveaspecialCocoaClubmug-butticketsarelimitedduetoOH&Sregulations.

Tickets are available on arrival Friday April 19 from 1 pm at the CrowAdminOfficeandcost$15.YourCocoaClubminilanyardmustbewornonentryeachnight,forhotchocolate(orteaorcoffee)and40minutesofwonderfulstories.Profitsgotowardsthisyear’scharity,theMurraguldrieVeteransRetreat.

LineDancingandHulaDancingclassesstartthedaywithfunexercise.The Crow Choir will squawk away happily each day to display theirtalentsattheANZACserviceandtheCrowShowcase.

MovieTrivia–ComeandtestyourmemoryandgetadoseofnostalgiaonSundayafternoon.Withover200 images, this isgoing tobeFUN!Therewillbeprizes...therewillbeJaffas,butremember'trivia'means'itain'timportant',justFUN.

WeWereThere - The Story of Gallipoli -AsANZACDay is part of thefestivalthisyear,wedecidedtoreprisethismusicalplayforvoices-usingthe talents of trained actress Jackie Kerin, our own wonderful DonnaGoodwinandentertainersGregNorthandJimHaynes,whodevisedtheproject. Based on first hand accounts, stories and versewritten bymenandwomenwhowereatAnzacCove, itreceivedastandingovationfouryearsago.Makesureyoubringahanky-it'samovingexperience.

AGiftCD - tomakeyouSMILE -andaConcert. Inyour 'welcomebag'thisyearyouwill find JimHaynes'newCD,Smile. It'sourgift toyouatStonetheCrowsthisyear,andthereisalsoaspecialSmileConcert.Threefriendscreatedthisalbumasagift for Jimwhenherecentlyturned70-all he had to dowas sing. Ourmusical director, GregHooper,who firstplayedpianoforJimin1989,didallarrangementsandorchestrations;therecordingwas done by long time friend of Jim's (and Stone theCrows),Marcus Holden, who also played all the stringed instruments (and acrosscut saw!). Chief Crow Chrissy did the graphic design and artwork.'These are the songs I love to sing,' says Jim, 'written by my favouritesongwriters - it was the best birthday gift I could imagine. As Greg,Marcus and I are all at Stone the Crows - there's a Smile Concert onTuesday.Pleasecomealongandsmilewithus.'

BestAustralianTruckingStories -BookLaunch-Wehaveneverhadaliterary event at Stone the Crows before, but this year we have a booklaunch.ThepublishersAllenandUnwinhave just releasedanew formateditionTheBestAustralianTruckingStories,anditjustsohappensthatfour of the people responsible for this collection of storieswill be herewithusonthefirstdayofourfestival.TruckingcrusaderRodHannifeyandChief CrowGrant, both contributed stories to the collection, as didlocalmanRonPullen,whowasresponsibleforestablishingtheTruckersMemorial at Tarcutta. Chief Crow Jim compiled the first edition of thebookin2010andnowitsbeingrelaunchedinanewformat.

Thegoodnewsisthattheneweditionislessexpensivethanthefirstandthere's a special Festival discount price. There will be humorousanecdotes,stories,verseandsongs-youcanevengetyourcopysignedbyallfouroftheblokesinvolved!

BradleyEustaceandRobNicholswillbeintheMusicCaw-nerClubhouseeach day with keyboard tuition (mornings) and ukulele lessons(afternoons). You can also join in a jam session/sing-along at 3 pmirrespectiveofwhichmusicalinstrumentyouplay.YoumightevenbringyourtonguedrumfromDaddyDayCare!

Prescription Refills – An innovative service from Michael O’Reilly’sChemist (Michael is giving a seminaron Saturdaymorning – seedetailslaterinthisprogram)isthecollectionofscriptsandreturnofmedicationsto thegrounds.To takeadvantageof thisserviceyouneed tohaveyourscript with the Crows Nest Information Desk no later than 9 am onTuesdayApril23,theygototheChemist,arefilledandreturnedbacktothe grounds byWednesday lunchtime. The cost will be marked on thepacket andyouwill sign for andpaybefore receivingyourmedications.ThanksMichaelandstaffforthisnovelidea.

Thegroundshavebeen laidouttomakethemostof theareasavailable,taking intoaccount the lengthofvehiclesandthedesireofgroups tobeparked incloseproximity. Except for Crow Road (the main drag between Copland Street andTasman Road) all roads are one way, designed to alleviate traffic andmakethevenuesaferforpedestrians. Donna's grandparents lived on Goat Island,right in the middle of Sydney Harbour, asher grandfather drove a launch for theMaritime Services Board, so she and heroldersisterspentmuchoftheirtimeaskidsontheharbourorrightinthemiddleofthecity.

Donnastartedsingingand learningpianoat theageof tenandappearedonYou'reAStaronChannelTen inherHSCyear.Shethencompleted12years of vocal training, culminating in an AMEB Teaching Certificate forClassical Singing and, afterworking on the Sydney club circuit for a fewyears,sheheadedoverseasin1988,intendingtostayintheUKforafewmonths.

PerformingTheTalkofTheTown,inLondon'sWestEnd,ledtoajobofferatthe,MardiGrasinOrlando,Florida,whereDonnadidtwoshowsanight,seven nights a week for nine months. Donna had some success with asingleplayedonNewYorkradio,touredwiththeNelsonRiddleOrchestra.and spent some years singing on cruise ships before returning home in1996.

ShereleasedseveralsinglesintheUKandEurope,resultinginsomechartsuccess and a successful tour of the UK arranged by her friend andsupporter Frank Ifield. The tour consisted of 46 shows in 63 days andDonnajokesthat2004wastheyearFranktriedtokillher!

StephenFisher-King Stephenwasoneoffourchildrenbornintoan AFL footballing family in Canberra. Hisolder brother played for North Melbourneand Stephen had to choose betweenfootball and music. He chose music andbecame the first in his family to enter theworldof entertainment, playing guitar andsinginginaduoinhisteens.HealsosangintheWodenValleyYouthChoirbeforestudyingclassicalmusicandoperaattheAustralianNationalUniversitySchoolofMusic.After graduating Stephen moved to Sydney where he was part of theperformanceteamatAustralia’sWonderlandbeforeestablishingacareerin musical theatre. His principal roles in major musical theatreproductions include Evita, Cats, HelloDolly and TheNewRockyHorrorShow.HealsotouredAustralasiaalongsideSarahBrightmaninTheMusicofAndrewLloydWebber.

A classically trained baritone, Stephen has also performed in operasincluding LaBoheme, appeared regularly on television – on theMiddayShowandTheMorningShow–andrecordedseveralalbums,includingacollectionof traditionalhymns for theBibleLeague.He is thewinnerofnine ‘Mo’ Awards, and seven ‘ACE’ (Australian Club Entertainment)Awards. Lisaclaims thatas soonasshewasbornshepickedupahairbrushandstarted singing into it! She grew up forcing neighbourhood kids toperform in concerts on her front porch and at backyard barbecues anddevelopedapassionforflaredjumpsuitsandblingthathasneverlefther.WhenABBAsplitupshewassoheartbroken,shequitsingingandbecamea teacher for seven years. Luckily, the tribute band era arrived andMuriel’s WeddingandPriscillarevived ABBA’s music. It was ‘Goodbyeteaching – hello ABBA tribute shows’! Lisa collects platform boots and,like heralterego Agnetha, she is famous for her bottom… and being adancingqueen,

CarolineTataraisahalfGreek,halfPolishAussiewhostartedperformingat children’s dance parties and singing in Greek bands as a teen, thenmoved on to Top 40 dance bands. Shewas amember of the AustralianYouthchoir.

MarcusHolden Marcus has appeared on albums, commercials aswell as films, some of the world’s great concertvenuesandperformedwiththegreatsofAustralianmusicsceneformanyyears. Trained as classical violinist from the age of 8,Marcus has developed skills as a multi-instrumentalist, playing mandolin, guitar, banjo,cittern, tenor guitar, dobro, all the members of the bowed stringinstrumentfamilyandeventhesaw.Hehasappearedatmajor festivalsaroundtheworld,majoreventssuchasWorldExpoandvenuessuchastheLincolnCentreinNewYorkandtheSydneyOperaHouse.Marcus playsmany styles ofmusic including Jazz, Folk, Country, Blues,andClassicalasasoloistandasamemberofmanygroups.

Alan Lazarus was born in Burwood NSWsome72yearsago.Nowretired,themajorityof his working life was spent in thetelecommunications industry, both withinAustraliaandoverseas. Hefirsttookupmusicatthetenderageof65years young. In fact his first publicperformancewasat the firstStonetheCrowsgathering in 2013. So as a singer/musician, he is somewhat of a ‘latebloomer’.A self taughtvocalistandAutoharpplayer,Alan iswell regardedamongthose he entertains for his smooth and relaxed style. He performsregularlyforvariouscommunitygroupsinadditiontostruttin’hisstuffattheoccasionalmusicfestival.Helovessittingaroundwithfriends,singingandsippingagoodredwineortwo.We are delighted to launch his first CD ‘Footprints’, recorded at FlyingFoxStudiosindowntownCrowLand.

Bill Daglishwas born in England in 1963 andmigratedtoAustralia in1964. Hegrewup inatalented family singingat Scottish social eventswithhismother,fatherandbrother.Billenteredmanytalentquestsbutwasbusyraisingafamilyandworkingasaplasterer,truckdriver,printer,office manager, chemical plant operator andwarehousesupervisor.

It wasn’t until he neared retirement that he returned to singing. Audience filming at live concerts is both disturbing and annoying - tootheraudiencemembersandartists.Itdetractsfromtheshowandspoilstheambienceandexperienceforothers.It's justbadmanners.Also .. it'sILLEGAL. When you pay to see a concert, you have paid for the liveperformance.Youhavenotpaidfortherighttorecordandkeepacopy.

Ifyourecordaliveperformancewithoutspecificconsent-youbreakthelawinthreeways;youcontravenecopyright,bootleggingandintellectualproperty laws.Venues can legally stop the recording of shows.AtStoneTheCrows,inaccordancewith the law,weban all audience filming atourconcerts.

STONETHECROWSGAMESRULESDISCBOWLS–PlayersmustthrowdiscswithbothfeetcontainedwithinthewidthofthesidelinesANDfromBEHINDthebaselineofthecourt.Afootoutsidethewidthofthesidelines,orONorOVERtherope(footfault)rendersthatdiscoutofplay.A disc that rolls outside the court but comes to rest fully or partiallyinsidethecourt isdeemedoutofplay.Adiscthatrestsagainst,or landsunder or over the perimeter of the rope is deemed out of play. A discthrownoutofsequence isdeemedoutofplay.Theumpireshallremoveany disc out of play from the court before the next disc is thrown, andreplace any other disturbed discs to (as close as possible) their formerpositionpriortotheshot.Thisalsorelatestothekittyifdisturbed,andtobereplacedtoformerposition.Thekittyisdeemedtobe ‘inplay’whilsttheportionofitssurfaceuponwhichitrestsininsidethecourt.Theteam,whichcausesthekittytobeknockedout,losesthatend,andthreepointsareawardedtotheopposingteam. A circle indicates thestarting location 14 to 20 inches in diameter and at least 3 ft from anyobstacles.Oncethecircleisdrawn,theplayerthenstandswithbothfeetinside the circle and throws the jack. LADDER GOLF – The game of Ladder Golf is played in rounds (best ofthree games) and typically a coin toss will determinewhich team goesfirst.Allteamsmustbemixed.StonetheCrowsformatgoeslikethis… TeamAplayer1playsTeamBplayer1–witheachplayerthrowingthreealternatingturnseachround.It’sthesameformatforplayers2and3inbothteams.ORTeamAplayer1throwsallthreeoftheirbolasandthenTeamBplayer1throwsall their threebolas. Repeat same format forplayers2and3 inboth teams.The format isbyagreementbetweenboth teamsbefore theroundbegins.Thegoal is toget thebolas tocatchononeof therungs, the toprung isworth three points, the second rung 2 points and the bottom rung is 1point. There isno setway to throwabola, thereforeaplayermay tossanywayhe/shelikesandcanevenbounceabolaontheground.Theteamwiththemostpointsattheendoftheroundgetstothrowfirstthe next round. After a round is played, points are totalled. Whicheverbolasarestillhangingareawardedpoints.Itisokay,encouragedeven,toknockthebolasofotherplayersofftherungs,inthatcase,thosebolasdonotcountaspoints.The first teamtoget to21pointsexactly is thewinner. 2019CHARITIESWith Anzac Day as part of the Festival, we invited the MurraguldrieVeteransRetreattocomeonboardwithLions(whoarebackcateringastheir fund raising). The Retreat members will be manning the gate onopendayandreceivefullproceeds.TheywillalsobenefitfromtheCocoaClubBedtimeStoriesandourraffle.ThemajorprizesfortheraffleincludeanoriginalpaintingofaWorldWarILightHorsemanwithhishorse(lovetheexpressiononthehorsesface),aqueensizequiltorwallhangingwithANZACtheme,amagnificentbookcommemoratingthefindingofHMASSydney.BriefHistoryoftheMurraguldrieVeteransRetreatIn 2005, the Vietnam Veteran Southwest NSW group heard that theForestryCommissionhadablockoflandinMurraguldrieForestavailableforleaseandsawthisasagoodopportunitytoestablishasereneplaceforlong-termtherapyforourmembersandotherveterans,wherethosewithsimilar experiences could gather and support one another and theirfamilies.

Theareawasveryovergrownwithsaplings,blackberriesandnumerousotherweeds.Unfortunately,verysoonafterthat,abushfirewentthroughmostoftheareawhichleadtosomeofthebigestablishedtreeshavingtoberemoved. Withateamofupto30membersandwivesworkingonandoffovertheyears,wehaveclearedsomeofthearea,builtalargecampkitchenarea,amenities blockwith a separate disabled toilet andpathways and rampaccess as well as a flat area for camping where we planted around 50trees.

As there was no power or running water, we purchased a generator,batteries, gas cylinders, pumps, solar and water tanks to make this acomfortablebushretreat.

The majority of this has been financed by our members - doingbarbeques,handdeliveringphonebooks,seekingdonationsandthroughgovernment and council grants. Some businesses in Wagga havesupportedusandbecomeoursponsors.Asourmembersaregettingolderandnotascapableasweoncewere,wehavenowincorporatedagroupofyoungerveteransfrommorerecentconflictstoassistintherunningandmaintenance of the Retreat with a view of them taking over so thisRetreatwillbeavailableforveteransformanyyearstocome.T

The Retreat for the use of Defence Veterans, ex and current servingmembersoftheDefenceforcetheirfamiliesandaffiliatedservicesisnotopentothegeneralpublicandallcampinghasasetlimitoftwoweeks.Itis a place where they can go to have some time out and space in thepeacefulandquietplacetoallowthemtoescapefromtheir“demons”andthepressuresofday-to-daylivingincloselivingpopulatedarea.
