Welcome to Swallownest Court Hospital
The hospital comprises four
wards:
Acute wards
Sandpiper
Osprey
PICU (Psychiatric Intensive
Care Unit)
Kingfisher
Rehabilitation ward
Goldcrest
When you arrive on the ward
the staff will help you to settle
in by introducing themselves,
showing you around the ward,
making you aware of your rights
and getting to know you as a
person.
Ward facilities
Rooms
You will have your own private
room with en-suite toilet and
shower facilities. You will also
have your own lockable safe
in your room for personal
possessions.
Day services
On the ward you will have
access to lounge and activity
areas with a separate ladies’
lounge. Therapy staff and
ward staff will provide regular
activities for you to engage
in on the ward area and you
will have access to games and
books to help you use your
time productively. There are also
rooms available for you to talk
to staff individually and for any
religious / spiritual needs.

Phones
You will have access to your
mobile phone during your stay,
although this is restricted on the
PICU ward for safety reasons.
If you do not have access to a
mobile, there is also a public
phone outside the entrance to
the acute wards.
Smoking
Swallownest is a no smoking
site. RDaSH is a smoke free trust
and no smoking is allowed on
the grounds at all. All patients
who smoke will be offered
nicotine replacement therapy
to help manage their nicotine
levels.
Outside space
Each of the wards has access to
external courtyards for patients
to use during the day and
evenings.
Finance office
This is situated in reception and
can be used by patients for the
storage of money, bank cards
and items such as house keys
which you may not want to
keep in your personal safe.
Meal times
Breakfast: 8am until 9am
Lunch: 12 until 1pm
Tea: 5 until 6pm
Visiting times
Mon to Fri: 3pm until 5pm
6pm until 8pm
Sat and Sun: 2pm until 5pm
6pm until 8pm

you please contact the ward
direct to make an alternative
arrangement.

Visiting areas
Most visits occur on the ward
area. However if any of the
visitors are aged under 18
or if anything confidential or
potentially upsetting needs to
be discussed, the family room
which is off the ward can be
pre-booked. Simply talk to the
ward staff to arrange this.
Personal recovery plan
You will be offered the
opportunity to develop your
own wellness recovery action
plan (WRAP) / recovery plan to
support you in your recovery
journey and help you maintain
positive mental health after
discharge.
Additional facilities
Complementary newspapers are
provided for each of the wards,
with a mobile library service and
daily mobile tuck-shop available
to all.
Multi-disciplinary team
You will be cared for by many
different professionals including:
• Your consultant doctor and
medical team
• Your named nurse, ward
manager and nursing team
• The therapy team including
occupational therapy (OT)
and physiotherapy staff
• Disciplines such as
psychology, social work and
pharmacy
• Staff from services such as
advocacy and chaplaincy
departments
• The carer’s team and
appropriate community
teams.
Being in hospital can be
a confusing time and we
encourage patients to approach
ward staff if they are unsure
of who their named workers

are or how to contact them.
The hospital staff do not wear
uniforms but can be identified
by their name badges and staff
photo boards.
Other facilities on the site
Gym
The gym is available most
days, with a ladies only gym
session once a week. You can
be referred to the gym by your
nurse, doctor or OT and the
physiotherapist will come and
have a chat with you before you
start. Check the board on your
ward for an updated timetable
of opening times.
Activities
The therapy department works
closely with the nursing team
to provide activities both on
and off the ward. These include
self catering, arts and crafts,
gardening, walking, games.
Check the board for up to date
timetables and events.
Rehabilitation
The team will support you with
your individual needs including
supporting independent living
skills, taking leave from the
ward, symptom management,
reintegration back into the
community and links with
outside agencies.

Patient experience meetings
Patients are also invited to
attend the ward patient
experience meetings. These
run monthly and are your
opportunity for you to have your
say on the services provided and
ideas for improvement. See the
information board for details of
times and dates of meeting.

Just a polite notice to remind
everyone that the hospital is
based in a residential area and
we must show consideration for
our neighbours. This includes
not dropping litter,being mindful
about where we park our cars
and not smoking in groups near
the entrance.
