Friday, March 1st at 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM Tickets: $25 in advance - $30 at door The term “blue-eyed soul,” originally coined in the 60s, refers to musicians who were influenced by soul rhythm and blues. Bring Back That Lovin’ Feelin' promises a soulfully sensational eve-ning with a full band and powerhouse vocals!

THE LIMELITERS

Tuesday, March 5th at 3:00 PM (ADDED) and 7:00 PM Tickets: $20 in advance – $25 at door The unique blend of surging vocals, thrilling harmony, whacked out humor and classic folk music of this unique trio continue to earn them their title as The Fabulous Limeliters! The Limeliters launched their career in 1959 at San Francisco’s famous “Hungry i” and before long, founding members Alex Hassilev, Lou Gottlieb, and Glenn Yarbrough emerged as one of the dominant voices of the early 1960’s folk music scene. A string of best-selling albums for RCA Records and television appearances quickly made The Limeliters a household name. Throughout the ensuing years, the lineup has featured several spectacularly talented new members, but The Limeliters have never deviated from the integrity of the fabulous sound they pio-neered. With an undiminished energy and enthusiasm, current members Don Marovich, Andy Corwin, and Gaylan Taylor re-main as exciting an act as the genre has produced.

ARIZONA GHOST TOWN DOUBLE FEATURE: Ghost Town Trail and Ghost Towns of Old Arizona

Two Films by Phil Wenstrand

Wednesday, March 6th at 7:00 PM

Tickets: $10 in advance - $15 at door The Ghost Town Trail isn’t necessarily a real place but is com-posed of the few images and stories that remain of Arizona’s frontier past. The “Trail” takes the viewer down a path that leads to riches, treasure and murder. Jimmy Pierce was just eating his lunch when he discovered a fortune. The Haldeman brothers were just defending themselves but they became the victims of “The Last Hanging” of Tombstone. Frontier Arizona was a very hostile place. Forbidding deserts, heat and unfriendly natives made pio-neering here as tough as any place in the west. As miners dug in search of riches, others built camps that turned into towns. These films will take you into these fascinating and often dangerous places as filmmaker Phil Wenstrand follows the stories and lives of those who braved frontier Arizona.

JACK LASSETER The Spanish History of California

Tuesday, March 12th at 7:00 PM

Tickets: $15 in advance - $20 at door California, the land of Disneyland, movie stars, freeways, and the ocean, was for some 300 years (from Cabrillo’s time in 1542 to the end of the Mexican War in 1848) part of the Spanish world. Although Cabrillo and other Spanish mariners sailed along its coast as far back as the 1500s, its first Spanish settlement didn’t come until 1769 with the establishment of presidios at San Diego and Monterey, and in the following year of 1770 with the estab-lishment of the mission at San Diego, which would be the first of that whole string of California missions along El Camino Real. Jack will tell us all about those missions, their importance to the development of California, their treatment of the Indians, and the effect of their secularization; as well as the founding of San Fran-cisco in 1776 by a Tucson boy, the Bear Revolt, the discovery of Gold at Sutter’s Mill, its importance in the Civil War and more.

ONGTUPQA A Film by Levi S. Davis Wednesday, May 1st at 7:00PM Tickets: $10 in advance – $15 at door This 50-minute film features stunning images of Grand Canyon, an explanation of Hopi cultural connections to the canyon, live music footage, and much more. It helps explain Grand Canyon as a living landscape, something Hopi people equate to a house of worship. At the completion of the film there will be a question and answer session and musical demonstration by Matthew Nel-son and Gary Stroutsos. Music has the power to connect people to place in a profound way. With the Desert View Watchtower perched on the edge of one of the world’s most important cultural and geographic land-scapes, a trio of musicians with strong connections to Grand Can-yon recorded music inside the Watchtower on a project called Öngtupqa. Öngtupqa is the Hopi name for Grand Canyon and features the oldest instruments from this corner of the world. Clark Tenakhongva, Gary Stroutsos and Matthew Nelson use their mastery of voice, flute and clay pot percussion to bring the acoustics within the Watchtower to life. Öngtupqa is an acoustic soundscape intended to honor the surrounding landscape through music created on-site that could never be replicated in a studio far from the views and spirit of Grand Canyon. Öngtupqa is the first audio recording within this location, whose architecture is in-spired by Ancestral Puebloan ruins.

“My only hope is the music we offer will resonate with the world,” said Tenakhongva, who is a renowned Hopi singer, ka-china carver, and works as the Vice Chairman of the Hopi Tribe. “As Hopi, we were born within Grand Canyon and when we are done we return back to this place to rejuvenate life of a new be-ginning. This is the cycle. This is the Hopi way. And these are songs about that special place – Öngtupqa.”

COMBINING DRAWING WITH PAINTING

Instructor: Rick Wheeler Dates: Every Tuesday, January 8 to April 23, 2019 Time: 9 AM - 11:00 AM Fee: $40/2-hour Session Scratchboard is fundamentally a drawing medium, popular in the early 1900's for book illustration. Scratchboard makes for some very dramatic black & white renderings, but with this class, the students will discover how adding color - using traditional watercolor - can enhance their drawings.

Color mixing, brush and paper choices, how to stretch your own paper will be covered, along with the importance of good drawing skills and such techniques as working light-to-dark, wet-into-wet, wet-over-dry, glazing, blending, and loose vs. tight painting. ACRYLIC LANDSCAPE:

A PAINTERLY APPROACH Instructor: Rick Wheeler Dates: Every Tuesday, January 8 to April 23, 2019 Time: 2:00 AM - 4:00 PM Fee: $40/2-hour Session "Painterly" is a term often used among other painters. If one painter calls another artists work, "painterly" it's con-sidered a compliment. The term is used to describe a style of work that allows for visible brushstrokes, thick applica-tions of paint, dry brush, and blocking-in, while incorpo-rating a more generalized, less detailed approach to paint-ing. All of these techniques, and several others will be covered.

BALANCING OPPOSITES:

THE YIN & YANG OF COMPOSITION

Instructor: Jane Davies Dates: April 29-30, May 1-3 Time: 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM Supply Fee: $10 Class Fee: $610, Early Bird Special $550 if paid by Feb 25 The concept of composition is elusive. Approaching com-position from the standpoint of Balancing Opposites can be an enlightening way to tackle the subject. In teaching, I find myself repeatedly saying things like: “all of your col-ors are saturated. How about balancing that out with some neutrals?” or “your piece is very busy; how about some quiet space?” In this workshop we will explore the ele-ments and principles of composition in terms of pairs of opposites: bright/dull; large/small; textured/smooth; busy/quiet, and so forth. You will come away with the tools to create dynamic compositions, and a deeper understanding of how to balance the Yin and Yang of composition!
