A big thank you to all of the members who performed patrols and water safety this year, as we continue to provide an amazing volunteer service to the community. Whilst this is a great step forward, it does not mean that the money has been secured yet. We still need to secure funding from Lotterywest and a number of approvals from government departments before we can say we are ready to go. We will continue with our planning and securing the support to go forward. Hopefully, in the next couple of months, we will be able to report that all is going ahead. For some, the season has now come to an end. For others, things are just starting to get busier. Patrols finished last weekend, and it was another amazing effort from our members, providing a service to the community and protecting them from any potential dangers which may exist.

Whilst our summer competition may have come to an end a couple of weeks ago, our winter program is just starting up with the first IRB Racing and Pool Rescue competition event running this weekend.

A couple of weeks ago I attended the last few days of the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast, and our very small team had an outstanding result. Whilst we did not bring back any medals this year, we did compete in 8 finals. Our 3 Boat teams and 8 competitors, including the supporting team, were certainly well represented throughout the carnival. Our investment in the water and surf boat competition continues to reap great results. Many competitors will now take a small break until our winter training programs begins. So keep an eye out for notices about these events.

A big thank you to all of the members who performed patrols and water safety this year, as we continue to provide an amazing volunteer service to the community. We have achieved more than 11500 hours on patrol and water safety, with more than 190 first aid cases and, more importantly, we completed more than 530 preventative actions which could have resulted in an injury or worse.

Our Club celebrations will continue in the coming weeks with the Mullaloo Awards of Excellence, where we celebrate the

fantastic effort of our members in all areas of the Club. This event gives our Club a chance to recognise the work that our members do throughout the season. It is a special night of celebration, where member’s efforts are recognised by their peers in every section of the Club.

In the last couple of weeks we went to the City of Joondalup council meetings to put our case forward for funding of the 1st floor refurbishment. With some great work from the Building Committee, led by Vicki Rasmussen, our local councillors, the Mayor and the many members who attended these sessions, we managed to get our proposal accepted for consideration in the next financial year’s budget.

The Board and Executive Committee continue to plan for next season. We are reviewing what has gone well and things that can be improved. There are always areas that we can improve and changes to the organisation in response to the challenges we face. If there are any ideas that you have, we are always happy to hear from you. You can email the office with your ideas and address them to the Executive Committee.

Thank you for another wonderful season and I look forward to seeing you all again for the next season.

See you on the beach.

2015/16 IRB Racing SeriesCompetition Season has finished?

No it has just started. IRB Racing Series is here. The 2015/16 SLSA WA Competition Season is launched by the IRB Racing Series. This exciting competition is for those amongst us who like to test their lifesaving skills under some pressure and interesting conditions. The objective of the IRB race is to rescue a “patient” or “patients” from the water in the quickest possible time. If I was in trouble in the water, I would want these guys and girls to be coming to get me.

There has been an IRB Racing team at the club for the last couple of years after the MSLSC Board, supported by the Executive Management Committee, decided to invest time and funds to kick-start the sport again after a break from competition for some years. The decision has paid off. A dedicated group of young club members have found a niche within the club framework to keep them involved with the club. They have been rewarded with success in the State Championships in the last two seasons, with a number of finals and two bronze medals.

The current team have been together for a couple of years and have continued to attract new members each season. This season there are a couple of new faces, and there is always room for more. See http://www.mullaloosurf.com.au/surf-sports/irb-racing/ for more information.

Terry (Uppy) Upston got the team up and running and coached them for the first couple of years. The team is now coached by Cameron Rapley, who took over last year. Cameron, in a past life at Sorrento SLSC , was a seasoned competitor, competing at State and National level. His knowledge and skills are now being used to raise the team skills to another level where they now can challenge some of the stronger clubs, as well as themselves.

The 2015/2016 Season is run over a number of rounds on a Sunday morning over the next couple of months, culminating in the State Championships at the end of June. With winter swells well and truly running, it makes for exciting racing.

Keep in mind the dates below, in particular the event at Mullaloo on May 24th and the State Championships on the 28th June. Come on down and support this intrepid young bunch of lifesavers. The team will head back to the club after each competition on Sunday at 5pm to review the day’s results and maybe show some photographs or video of the day’s events.

The 2015/16 event calendar is below.

SURF SPORTS

Aussies 2015 at North Kirra and Tugan in QLD.What an impressive effort from our athletes at the 2015 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships 11-19 April.

This year marked 100 years of Aussies and the inaugural Youth Championships. Harry Jones was our only competitor in the Youth Championships and kicked off the competition flying the Club flag in the opening grand parade.

With a small but mighty team – 7 water competitors, 1 beach competitor and 3 surf boat crews – we made 8 finals and 11 semi finals! Ben Jones had a cracker of an Aussies and good effort for Wes Gould and Paige Wood competing up age groups to make teams.

This Aussies had its fair share of kinks…

• With a less than savoury injury on the first day of masters surf boat racing I (Sandy Clarke) was out for the remainder of the competition. Hats off and big thanks to Rebecca Singleton for flying over on short notice in lieu of her 18th birthday to fill the seat.

• Paige Wood was a trooper nursing a gash to the shin only a week out from the Championships.

• Rob Szweczak had himself in “stitches” just getting out of a boat!!

• Seasoned competitor Jeff Davidson unable to attend the Aussies due to an accident a few weeks prior to the Championships – missed you!!

Was an enjoyable Aussies campaign with great camaraderie and team spirit. A fitting end to the 2014/15 competition season.

With the Aussies on the Sunshine Coast in 2016… let’s bring it!!

IT’S HERE – 2015/16 COMPETITION SEASON!!!Yes, the competition season starts this Saturday with Pool Rescue Round 1 at HBF Stadium and Sunday with the first round of IRB Racing at Leighton.

Also, coming up is the Longboard Surfing State Championships at Secret Harbour on 13 June, 2015. The short board Surfing State Championships will be later in the year in August.

Huge thanks to the below for volunteering their time to our athletes.

Andrew Mosel, Carlo Tenaglia, Mandy Lee, Lyn Brosens, Mike Bubrzycki, Sandy Clarke, Chris Hainsworth, Jenni Wood, Terry Upston, Jared Clarke, Andrew Doyle, Kirsten Fortmann, Penny Fortmann, Eric Fortmann, Edgar Coello, Declan De Mamiel, Emma De Mamiel, Simone Pastor, Rick Hawke, Wes Gould, Brett Gould, Mark Hills, Andrew Ridley, Mark Cleary, Tayla Tenaglia, Laura Edmunds, Clara Theide, Simon Gidley, Brett Warner, Rob Amos, Stuart Clarke, Terrence Colby, Mark Donnely, John Gilbody, Tim McFarlane, Mark Platt, Cameron Rapley and Laurie De Mamiel, Tom Bubryzcki.

Currently IRB racing training is in full swing with the IRB States fast approaching. Pool Rescue training will commence next week. Planning is underway for the winter training program, please look on the Mullaloo Website Calendar for training updates.

JUNIORS

Well, we have been enjoying what can only be described as an Indian summer, with an early morning nip in the air. The ocean has been calm which has given our U13’s transitioning to Mals a great opportunity to get accustomed to the bigger boards before the surf picks up. With over 20 attending the first session, it was a great turnout and for many, merely carrying the board down the beach proved to be a challenge. It is hard to believe that next season these kids, many I have known since U7’s will, with an SRC qualification, become our newly qualified patrol personnel. What a journey!

For those with time to spare, the Pool Rescue series is just beginning and, with something to suit everyone, the club welcomes and needs your participation in these events. This is a great opportunity to learn new skills in a pool environment and participate in a State Championship event in July. The series has been opened up to kids in the U10’s and U9 age groups and for these younger groups, separate information will be issued, explaining the mechanics of competition and what’s involved. Good luck to all those who will be competing in the first series on Saturday.

Behind the scenes meetings are taking place with key personnel to identify what improvements can be made to the Junior Development program to make your child’s experience more enriching. It is an ideal opportunity, when the pace slows down, to actually evaluate the services we offer.

For the kids, I see the value in keeping those that are keen, socially engaged in surf club during the winter period. As mentioned in the last newsletter, the plan is to organise off season social events and I am in the process of identifying suitable social activities at a price that suits all budgets. Watch this space!

Finally, for the adults, support your surf club and book a seat at the Annual Awards night at Joondalup Resort next week. It is the Oscars equivalent for Mullaloo. A great event in a perfect venue with good food, a DJ and more importantly great company!

‘God bless that potential that we all have for making anything possible if we think we deserve it.’

See you on the beach!

COLLECTING FOR THE BALI NIPPERS PROGRAM

Do you have surf gear that your child no longer uses, like goggles, bathers, rash vests or old club shirts?

Every year a group of our Trainers and Assessors head off to Bali to train the local surf clubs and we take donated equipment to help out. Over the last few years their Nipper programs has steadily increased and they are desperate for gear.

If your child no longer has any use for their equipment or has outgrown it we would dearly love it!! I will be collecting on the following dates or there will be a collection bin available.

If you have items that you would like to donate but these dates and times don’t suit please contact me directly on 0407479760. Lucy Cleary
