Not too long ago, someone asked me about “Bible study” in our parishes, and I directed this person to the “Faith Sharing” group. I found myself wishing that I could di- rect this person to more opportunities, at different times and places. Thirty years ago, when I was serving at a very large Springfield parish, I looked at people rushing past each other, and I had the same realization as that found at the climax of the play Our Town, when Emily exclaims: “It goes so fast. We don’t have time to look at one anoth- er.” If our identity as a Eucharistic community makes sense if we find our worship to be the “peak” experi- ence it is supposed to be the peak must have a founda- tion, in faithfilled relationships we share with a few peo- ple. For many years since then, at four of my previ- ous assignments, I have been involved in “small faith communities” which are Bible studies in the sense that the main order of business is reflecting on the upcoming Sunday Scriptures. One difficulty I found in setting up these groups is that everybody wants to be in the group the priest is in. I understand that potential leaders of groups may not feel qualified to lead discussions on the Scriptures. We can, however, lean on a variety of publi- cations which can help us navigate the Word of God. You may have noticed some information in these pages on Cursillo, in which I have not yet participated. I know enough to tell you that the initial Cursillo experi- ence is followed by people forming small communities in which we can develop our lives in accord with our faith. Once a month I go to University City to take part in a discussion group facilitated by Commonweal maga- zine, a venerable American Catholic publication. Com- monweal’s discussion materials take as given that mem- bers of such groups are seeking to explore the connec- tions among faith, politics, and a more just society. I have considered trying to get a similar group started on this side of the Mississippi. For now, however, I am en- joying being a member of a group and am not feeling any urgency to start a group. SMALL GROUPS

Recently I enjoyed a second visit with the St. Jerome “Faith Sharing” group which meets on Tuesdays at 10:00 am in the lower level of the church building. Not too long ago, someone asked me about “Bible study” in our parishes, and I directed this person to the “Faith Sharing” group. I found myself wishing that I could di-rect this person to more opportunities, at different times and places.

Thirty years ago, when I was serving at a very large Springfield parish, I looked at people rushing past each other, and I had the same realization as that found at the climax of the play Our Town, when Emily exclaims: “It goes so fast. We don’t have time to look at one anoth-er.” If our identity as a Eucharistic community makes sense if we find our worship to be the “peak” experi-ence it is supposed to be the peak must have a founda-tion, in faithfilled relationships we share with a few peo-ple.

For many years since then, at four of my previ-ous assignments, I have been involved in “small faith communities” which are Bible studies in the sense that the main order of business is reflecting on the upcoming Sunday Scriptures. One difficulty I found in setting up these groups is that everybody wants to be in the group the priest is in. I understand that potential leaders of groups may not feel qualified to lead discussions on the Scriptures. We can, however, lean on a variety of publi-cations which can help us navigate the Word of God.

You may have noticed some information in these pages on Cursillo, in which I have not yet participated. I know enough to tell you that the initial Cursillo experi-ence is followed by people forming small communities in which we can develop our lives in accord with our faith.

Once a month I go to University City to take part in a discussion group facilitated by Commonweal maga-zine, a venerable American Catholic publication. Com-monweal’s discussion materials take as given that mem-bers of such groups are seeking to explore the connec-tions among faith, politics, and a more just society. I have considered trying to get a similar group started on this side of the Mississippi. For now, however, I am en-joying being a member of a group and am not feeling any urgency to start a group.

In this is love… (1 John 4)

From the time I was young, coming up through Catholic school, I had always experienced a certain relationship with God. Now skeptics, selfproclaimed intellectual atheists or agnostics with a “scientific” approach to reality try to explain away such things as mere imaginative illusions or delusions which crop out of unmet human needs or emotions this is what they say even in regard to such realities as human love, reducing it to mere emotion or a quantifiable chemical/biological/neurological function. But they are seriously mistaken. I say this because an experience of the love of another for us is not of something that comes from within our own self but is truly an experience of a reality from outside of self, communicated to us from the other. And it isn’t mere emotion, simply a feeling of wellbeing that one only imagines to be something greater, or something we explain away by calling it “love” or “God,” but a reality which is active and alive.

Anyway, I was aware of the reality of God’s presence and love for me as long as I can remember, although I became more keenly aware of it in my teen years, especially when as a junior in high school I went on a “Teens Encounter Christ” weekend. It was during this weekend that I came upon the passage from the first letter of John which is today’s second reading. Upon my first reading I understood it intimately: “Love consists in this: not that we have loved God, but that he has loved us.” This is one of my favorite passages from all of Scripture; it is the pivotal truth for my life, the truth that changes everything: God loves God IS love and nothing else matters. Nothing else I encounter, no problems or difficulties, no sins I commit or even think of, nothing I do or produce of my own create or can ever alter this reality. God loves us. God’s love is something that no one can explain away; it is a reality far too vast and deep to ignore or deny. When we encounter the Risen Lord Jesus, when we experience his loving presence, his Spirit, it is an undeniable reality. And the only response is to love others as we have been loved.

And that is what conversion is: to be changed by love. And no one is ever converted by arguments or apologetics, or faith statements spouted from the Catechism, but only by true, active love for the other, just as we have been loved.

Nurturing Our Faith Sr. Linda Mary, Pastoral Associate for Faith Formation

From “The Gospel for All Ages”, Pflaum Gospel Weeklies:

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus shares the depth of his love for us. It is simple and everlast-ing. He calls us to love one another, as God loves him and as he loves us. Jesus explains that we will be happy and fulfilled only when we keep this one command: Love one another. But perhaps it’s not so simple. This love may require putting others first and giving up a special treat, or being a friend to someone who is not easy to love. “Remain in me,” Jesus instructs us. Following him will make our “joy complete,” and we should “love one another.” Jesus loves us and brings us joy, and we bring joy to others through love. During the Sign of Peace, try to see Jesus in each person you greet and smile at them with love.

Life Question: Whose friendship is lifegiving for you? With whom do you share your joy to make it more complete?

Gospel Question: How do you experience the Spirit at work in your discomforts with the Church today?

One pathway to bring love to others: Become a

Springfield Dominican Associate!

TheSpringfield Dominican Associate Pro-gramwas formed as a means for laypeople to participate in our congregation’s mission. As a vowed sister in the Springfield Dominican congre-gation, I invite anyone interested in connecting more closely with what we are about to chat with me, or view our website: springfieldop.org Dominican Associates are men and women who embrace the Dominican traditions of prayer, study, community and ministry. They are called to share the Gospel with others and “preach with their lives.” Associate candidates meet once a month for nine months, typically at the Springfield Domini-can Motherhouse. Depending upon the group, we could perhaps video conference from Troy. Each candidate would have a sponsor, either a Sister or an Associate in the area. The next group begins this coming August with a retreat day.

Lord, show us how to love and bring joy to others. Amen, Alleluia! Pax,

Weekly column brought to you byyour Parish Finance Council

Dear Dave,

My husband and I are trying to buy a house, but we both have low credit scores, so we’re hav-ing trouble securing a loan. We’ve heard you talk about getting a mortgage loan with no credit score. Is this the same as a low credit score?

Laura

Dear Laura,

No, it is not. No credit score, means you don’t have any credit or your credit score is “indeterminable.” A low credit score indicates you’ve had or still have debt in your life, and you haven’t done a good job of paying creditors on time.

Two things will help solve the problem of having a low credit score. One is time. If you’ve had instances of late payments from years ago, time will help heal that to a de-gree. The older late issues become, the less they count against you.

But my guess is you two probably have some bad debt. By bad debt, I mean things that were never paid, or accounts that are in collections. If that’s the case, you need to con-tact those people, and settle those debts in full and in writing as quickly as possible. Officially close the ac-counts, too, before you try to buy a home.

When it comes to buying a home, Laura, I always advise folks to first be debtfree and have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses set aside.
