  • Fr. Matt’s Corner: . . . That the world might

be saved through Him . . . My dear friends in Christ, The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the

fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. The

Father so loved the world that he gave [sent] his only

Son all the way from heaven to the very gates of hell.

All the while, though, the Son was ‘tethered’ to the

Father by the Love that they share (i.e. the Holy

Spirit). Why did God ‘stretch’ Himself so greatly?

John tells us: so that everyone who believes in him

might not perish but might have eternal life. For God

did not send his Son into the world to condemn the

world, but that the world might be saved through him.

On this Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, we

remind ourselves once again that love is not simply

something that God does – Love is who God is. God is

the eternal relationship of 3 Persons – Father, Son, and

Spirit – giving themselves away for the purpose of Life

[salvation]. God is not merely a rock on which to

build our life; but He has also opened Himself –

exposing the inner beauty of the three Persons united

in love – in order to share His life with us – that the

    world might be saved!

Marriage and family life are an image of God

(that’s why we can’t mess around with these things, by

the way). We are created in the image of the Triune

God to open ourselves up to God and one another for

the purpose of new life. Within the Triune God, it is

the person of the Father who eternally initiates this gift

of Himself to Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Within the

family, it is to be the person of the father who

continually initiates the giving away of himself to and

for his wife and children – forgetting himself for the

good of his family. It is the father’s role to lead his

bride and his children to The Father so that through

The Father’s embrace, they might not perish but might

    have eternal life.

It is a tragedy in our society that so many men

have turned aside from their God-given greatness and

rejected the role of real fatherhood. By divorce,

neglect, sloth, pride, lust, greed, indifference, and

anger – too many have become too unlike God. As we

look forward to next Sunday, let us thank those men

who have said “No” to themselves and our culture of

death; let us thank those men who have said “Yes” to

God; let us thank those men who – for us – have

become fathers in The Father’s image. May you and I

become more and more God-like by meditating today

and always on this beautiful mystery of the Holy

    Trinity.

Peace to all of you this holy day and to all who

love the Lord in simplicity of heart,

    Fr. Matt

Ask Father: This week’s question: What does it mean to ‘fear God’?

What a perfectly-timed question following on the

heels of Pentecost, and as we come now to the Solemnity of

the Holy Trinity! So, as always, thanks for asking!

The Bible states (in Psalm 110 and several places in

Proverbs) that the beginning of Wisdom is fear of the Lord.

We also know (from Isaiah 11:2) that ‘fear of the Lord’ is

one of the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Clearly, these are

both good things, and so we should seek to have more ‘fear

of God’. But St. John (also in the Bible) says that God is

Love, and Perfect Love (that would be God) casts out all

fear – for fear has to do with punishment. So, this is a ‘fear

of God’ that rather than seeking more of, we ought to hope

to grow out of. Is the Bible contradicting itself here?

Actually, no. We’re talking about 2 different kinds

of fear of God. The latter example (from St. John) is

talking about a servile fear – one that seeks to avoid

punishment. Now, avoiding punishment is generally a

good thing – it’s a strong motivating force for learning to

do the right thing (to obey the Law – both human and

Divine Laws). But if avoiding punishment is the only

reason we ever do good, then we will never mature – we’ll

be thinking and acting in childish ways always.

That’s why St. John says that Perfect Love casts out

this kind of fear. When God’s love is perfected in us, we

will most certainly avoid the eternal punishment of Hell,

but that won’t be our constant preoccupation. Rather than

looking over our shoulder wondering in fear whether or not

we deserve punishment, we will be lifting our hearts up to

the Lord in trusting love of His great mercy.

Now, that brings us to a second type of fear – what

we might call filial fear (the fear of disappointing someone

we greatly love and admire). When a child passes from

servile fear to filial fear, there is much less need for harsh

discipline. An imperceptible sigh or a downcast glance

from a parent is enough to make the child never want to

commit the least infraction ever again!

Finally, there is a third (and shall we say a more

perfect) type of fear. That is the disorienting entrance into

an awe-filled wondrous mystery. This is the fear that we

experience when we recognize our smallness in the

presence of some immense greatness. It might be the

dizziness of looking out from a great height, or it might

come from having a huge whale suddenly emerge from the

depths as you’re swimming in the ocean. Always, it comes

from contemplating the Face of God. This is One who is

far beyond me and my puny ideas. This is Wonder and

Awe, this is true and perfect ‘fear of the Lord.’

Wow, I better end this right here before I wet

myself. Thanks again for another great question, and until

next week, may God bless you and your loved ones!
