Holy Mass The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days is removed during these emergency circumstances of the lockdown, and for as long as they last. This pandemic is the serious reason why this obligation does not apply at this time.

The Vatican II document Lumen Gentium (“Light of the Nations”) describes our homes as “the Domestic Church” for this is the first place we learn about our

faith and continue our journey of faith through our daily living. We are encouraged to develop ways in which we can renew

and deepen still more our spiritual relationship with God in our homes at this time when we are unable to gather or pray in our Churches.

Sacrament of Reconciliation The Congregation for Sacred Worship, speaking about the pandemic, reminds the faithful who cannot receive sacramental absolution, that ‘perfect contrition, rooted in love of God who is to be loved above all things, expressed in a sincere request for forgiveness, insofar as the penitent is able to make it at that moment, and accompanied by the firm intention to go to confession as soon as is possible, obtains forgiveness of all sins, including grave sin (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1452). Confessions cannot be heard over the telephone. Services of General Absolution cannot be held as this involves travel and the gathering of people.

All liturgies, parish activities and meetings are postponed until further notice

  • Thirty Second Week of Ordinary Time

Entrance Antiphon Cf. Ps 87: 3 Let my prayer come into your presence. Incline your ear to my cry for help, O Lord.

The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Collect Almighty and merciful God, graciously keep from us all adversity, so that, unhindered in mind and body alike, we may pursue in freedom of heart the things that are yours. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading Wisdom 6:12-16 Wisdom is bright, and does not grow dim. By those who love her she is readily seen, and found by those who look for her.

Quick to anticipate those who desire her, she makes herself known to them. Watch for her early and you will have no trouble; you will find her sitting at your gates. Even to think about her is understanding fully grown; be on the alert for her and anxiety will quickly leave you. She herself walks about looking for those who are worthy of her and graciously shows herself to them as they go, in every thought of theirs coming to meet them. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 62(63):2-8

For you my soul is thirsting, O God, my God.

O God, you are my God, for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting. My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water.

For you my soul is thirsting, O God, my God.

So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory. For your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise.

For you my soul is thirsting, O God, my God.

So I will bless you all my life, in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul shall be filled as with a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy.

For you my soul is thirsting, O God, my God On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night for you have been my help; in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.

For you my soul is thirsting, O God, my God.

Second reading 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 We want you to be quite certain, brothers, about those who have died, to make sure that you do not grieve about them, like the

  • other people who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and that it will be the same for those who have died in Jesus: God will bring them with him. We can tell you this from the Lord’s own teaching, that any of us who are left alive until the Lord’s coming will not have any advantage over those who have died. At the trumpet of God, the voice of the archangel will call out the command and the Lord himself will come down from heaven; those who have died in Christ will be the first to rise, and then those of us who are still alive will be taken up in the clouds, together with them; to meet the Lord in the air. So we shall stay with the Lord for ever. With such thoughts as these you should comfort one another.

Gospel Acclamation Mt24:42 44 Alleluia, alleluia! Stay awake and stand ready, because you do not know the hour when the Son of Man is coming. Alleluia!

Gospel Matthew 25:1-13 Jesus told this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were sensible: the foolish ones did take their lamps, but they brought no oil, whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps. The bridegroom was late, and they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a cry, “The bridegroom is here! Go out and meet him.” At this, all those bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps, and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, “Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out.” But they replied, “There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves.” They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding hall and the door was closed. The other bridesmaids arrived later. “Lord, Lord,” they said “open the door for

us.” But he replied, “I tell you solemnly, I do not know you.” So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.’

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

  • Prayer over the Offerings Look with favour, we pray, O Lord, upon the sacrificial gifts offered here, that, celebrating in mystery the Passion of your Son, we may honour it with loving devotion. Through Christ our Lord. Communion Antiphon Cf. Ps 22: 1-2 The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose, near restful waters he leads me. Prayer of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen (St Alphonsus Liguori)

Prayer after Communion Nourished by this sacred gift, O Lord, we give you thanks and beseech your mercy, that, by the pouring forth of your Spirit, the grace of integrity may endure in those your heavenly power has entered. • November is the month of the Holy Souls …

Traditionally during the month of November the names of our deceased family and friends are held especially in our thoughts and prayers and also in a basket on the sanctuary. Please place names in an envelope with your offering if you so wish and post through the letter box of the Presbytery clearly marked “Holy Souls”. Names can also be emailed to the Parish Office and

    added to the basket.

    Fr Michael…

Fr Michael is recovering slowly and making steady progress. He is very grateful for your prayers and messages of support at this time but his main aim now is rest and recuperation.

    Parish Finances…

All contributions made by parishioners are very much appreciated at any time, but the generosity of those of you who have continued to give via online banking and standing order, during this difficult time, has been valued greatly. We also realise that the current emergency is affecting many people’s income and they may not be able to continue their level of offerings. If this is the case, we fully understand. Many parishioners contribute through Planned Giving Envelopes or loose plate and we are asking you, if your circumstances allow, to re-consider your way of giving and use either Online Banking or, if you are not online, the paper standing order method.

Thank you to all those who have changed to a standing order! Your support is very much appreciated

    The advantages to this are:

Usually free of charge for both payer and payee

Quick and easy to set up

    Useful for making recurring contributions

Helps the Parish to have a reliable income each month to assist in forward planning

You can increase or decrease your offering at any time by contacting your bank

Less cash handling within the parish

Increased security as less cash being kept on Church premises and being taken to the bank

Setting up a Standing Order with Online Banking If you have internet access and your bank account is online you can set up your standing order with the Parish bank details which can be given to you by the relevant Parish Office on the telephone or emailed to you on request. Please use as the reference your surname and first name with the prefix Z if you Gift Aid e.g. ZSMITHJANET with Gift Aid or SMITHJANET without Gift Aid. Please remember if you are a taxpayer gift aid can be claimed from your donations. If you donate £20.00 per month this would become £25.00 at no extra cost to yourself. If you wish to Gift Aid as a taxpayer, you will need to sign a Gift Aid declaration, again available from the Parish Office or downloaded from the Diocesan Website. If you do not have access to Online Banking but still wish to contribute by standing order, please request a form from the Parish Office If you would like your new supply of envelopes posting to your home address please contact Fr. Michael by email or telephone and we will arrange this for you

    Support during Lockdown…

Marriage Care Through our relationship counselling service, now available via webcam, we accompany, with compassion and practical wisdom, couples who find themselves in need of support on their journey. Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, we know that increases in family stress and impending threat of relationship breakdown will plunge many more into financial difficulties. We are unique in asking couples who come to us for counselling only to pay what they can afford, reflecting our commitment to support those most in need. Please encourage couples to connect with us today at www.marriagecare.org.uk

Recent research, August 2020, by University College London and Sussex University has shown that the coronavirus lockdown has provoked a mental health crisis among the LGBTQ community, with younger people being the most seriously affected. The diocese has responded by setting up a specialist pastoral network in all the areas within the diocese, to give advice or offer pastoral support to families or individuals who might need help. To make contact please email in confidence to the diocesan coordinator: [email protected] A Mass with the intention to reflect the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on LGBT+ people will be celebrated in Advent at St Alban’s, Derby, on Thursday 3rd December at 7pm, with a period of Exposition before Mass, starting at 6.30pm. You can view virtually through the “Derby Catholics Live” https://www.derbycatholiclive.co.uk/
