Dear Holy Family, St. Mary and St. Anthony Parish:

“Do what ever he tells you.” (John 2:5)

It’s a marvel those servants didn’t say to Mary “Why should we?” “What good is it

going to do?” “It’s not going to work.”

They simply trusted that there were forces at work far greater than their

understanding. And low and behold, the wedding hall was filled with rejoicing

when the water turned into wine.

Because I am gone this weekend I want to put in writing what we know and what

we don’t about both agenda items for the Joint Parish Council meeting this

Thursday: the potential use of the St. Anthony Convent and the proposal to change

the Sunday Mass Schedule.

I completely agree with all those who are concerned about the safety of our school children and neighbor-

hood and would never want to have people living next to the school who could be dangerous. I would not be

a part of anything I believed would endanger our school children. Because of the plentiful feedback we’ve

been getting on possible uses of the Convent our thinking has gone away from a Homeless Shelter to a

Transitional Living Center. If used as a Transitional Living Center the present Convent would house two or

possibly three families who are committed to getting out of poverty and off of public assistance. They would

sign a contract agreeing to work with area agencies to learn how to handle their money, prepare for

employment and develop healthy living skills. Such a program usually lasts about three months.

It is just a proposal at this point and would take six to nine months to turn into a reality. But it is a proposal

Catholic Charities is so excited about that their director, Roberto Partarrieu, will be coming from La Crosse

to our Council meeting Thursday. There are many questions to address but both he and we are hoping that in

the end this will be a program administered by Catholic Charities, located in the St. Anthony Convent and

fully supported by our three parishes.

Catholic Charities has just opened a Transitional Living Center in Wausau. Roberto said building bridges to

help people get out of poverty is Catholic Charities’ number one priority and they are very interested in start-

ing a project in a rural part of the Diocese. We will also bring to Thursday’s meeting letters of support from

Clark County Social Services. Thursday evening, our Social Concerns Committee, that brings this proposal,

is simply asking for permission to study the feasibility of the proposal which would involve approaching area

services and agencies in the name of our parishes to determine their level of support. Perhaps by the next

Joint meeting of the councils in May a final decision could be made.

There seems to be some confusion about the other item on the Council agenda as well. In response to the

very troubling attendance figures at St. Anthony’s and Holy Family, St. Mary’s Pastoral and Finance

Councils most kindly offered to bear some of the burden of there being fewer Masses available by adjusting

the Sunday morning schedule from 8:30am and 10:30am to 7:30am and 9:30am. And they invited

St. Anthony’s to choose which one they wanted. At their November meeting St. Anthony’s Councils were

very grateful for the offer and chose the 9:30am Mass.

For the last month members of both Councils have been exploring the issue with parish members to assess

the level of support for this change. At our meeting Thursday, Council members will share what they have

learned. Then, as the people we have elected to lead us, they will decide. If there is to be a change they will

also address the question of when. Any change of this importance would certainly require at least a couple of

months advance notice.

If you haven’t expressed your thoughts to a Council member yet and would like to do so, their names are

listed in this bulletin. But I ask a couple of things of you. Please think of our parishes as one family. That

would mean, at least, that we are concerned about the impact a decision has on other members of the family

as much as we are about its impact on us. And secondly, trust. If God is at work here, and God most

certainly is, than difficult situations can have miraculous outcomes. Water can be turned into wine.

Fr. Steve

St.Anthony’s PCCW is looking to create a DEDI-

CATED Group of people to form a Funeral Dinner

Circle. We would like to create a team of about 25-30

people who also enjoy providing a service to members

of our church when they are facing a difficult time in

their life. We are encouraging and hopeful to get some

men to help out too. Those kettles are getting

heavy! We would create two groups from this list of

people, those able to work weekdays and those who

can work Saturday funerals. We would like to imple-

ment this by the end of March, so if interested please

contact Millie Larson at 715-267-1478 or Julie Loos at
