DANII FOUNDATION UPDATE

#NOMOREFEAR 2018 AND BEYOND: SUPPORT FOR EVERY AUSTRALIAN LIVING WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES

Our social media pages have been overwhelmed with personal accounts of how CGM technology has changed the lives of t1d’s and their families, parents have experienced sleep, and teenagers have regained confidence and positivity for life. Many also report very real improvements in their HBA1C. HBA1C is glycated haemoglobin. Measuring it enables clinicians to get an overall picture of what average blood sugar levels have been over a period of weeks/months. In some cases there have been massive improvements and stability unknown to the individual in the past.

The documented health benefits of well controlled diabetes cannot be underestimated. When we see the serious morbidity or poorly controlled diabetes, including the high health costs of kidney disease, blindness and limb amputation it is easy to understand the very real cost saving of CGM over the medium to long term.

As a result the Foundation did not wait long to start the campaign for those over 21 living with diabetes. In July 2017 we launched the #NOMOREFEAR campaign, targeting every Federal politician to support an extension of CGM funding. In late 2017 we submitted a Pre-budget submission calling on the government to make a modest increase to the program assisting those adults with high needs (hypo-unaware and pregnant women). Unfortunately in the recent budget we found that our submission was not successful in either CGM funding or in Education in Schools. We are however hopeful to again see a bi-partisan election commitment. DANII Friends are working very hard to achieve this, close to 100 politicians have been visited with more meeting requests to politicians every week.

DANII is the only organisation to provide free 2 week trials of CGM and an extensive scholarship program. To date we have provided over 120 x 2 week trials and 25 x 12 month CGM scholarships. Our focus is now on adults, with young people receiving access to CGM funding and a recent increase in the insulin pump program for those under 18 years. We understand the limitations of government funding and the need for a staged approach. We are now making calls on the government to release any data they have on the first 12 months of CGM funding. We believe there will be a wealth of evidence to support our stream of anecdotes that demonstrate life renewed.

Our commitment to political advocacy is considerable, despite the Foundations limited resources we engage a lobbyist to influence the political agenda and also to support our friends when they engage politicians and the media in their local community. Our first round of success was overwhelming and achieved in a very short timeframe. Now we are focussed on supporting and educating our support base in order to continue our success in saving and changing lives.

After a massive 2017, this year has been somewhat quieter on the government relations front. DANII played a leading role in securing and implementing the $54m funding package for Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM), announced by Minister Hunt in April. Immediately thereafter the Foundation was funded by the Department of Health to undertake a national communications roadshow, taking in 17 locations in 42 days. While this was a mammoth task it reaffirmed why the Foundation exists. DANII exists to impact on the “here and now” to help improve day to day lives of every Australian living with Type 1 diabetes (t1d), and through that their family and loved ones.

ABOUT US

A WIN FOR TYPE 1 KIDS, BUT THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER…It is just over 6 years since our world was turned upside down. My 11 year old daughter, Monique was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) when an unexplained autoimmune response killed all the insulin producing cells in her pancreas. Life cannot exist without insulin, so there is no time to gather your thoughts, treatment commences and never ends. To keep her alive I became responsible for calculating and administering a lethal drug that if miscalculated could have catastrophic consequences.

Every minute of every day is spent fearing for the future of your child, no matter what age they are. Type 1 Diabetes never ends. You never outgrow this disease, it doesn’t become more manageable with age or maturity, it never rests or takes a holiday, it is 24/7 for the rest of your life. I cannot adequately describe the fear that responsibility invoked from that day. And that was nothing compared to the fear that overcame Monique, ultimately resulting in a diagnosis of anxiety disorder. I could not believe in an age of technology and medical advancement, such archaic methods were used to manage this relentless disease. So began the search for answers, and standards of care in other parts of the world.

This led me to the newly established DANII Foundation, and two grieving parents, who were living my worst nightmare. Daniella’s death could have been prevented. A Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) would have saved her life, but the Australian T1D community were in the dark. Donna and Brian made a promise to their Angel, not to stop until this device was approved, affordable and readily available to every Type 1 Diabetic. I’m so grateful I crossed their path.

The Foundation took on the unenviable task of lobbying our government for approval of CGM followed by the gruelling campaign for its prohibitive cost to be subsidised. They started raising awareness about “What is type ONE” and fundraising through events like tonight’s Jelly Bean Gala Ball to bring to Australia the device and provide CGM trials and Insulin Pump/CGM scholarships to assist those most at risk. Those who are hypo unaware, or pregnant managing erratic hormone affected bloods sugars, or the T1D suffering complete burnout from years of managing this relentless disease, and families like mine - sleep deprived and struggling to provide proper diabetes care to their child crippled with debilitating T1 related anxiety. These trials and scholarships have changed hundreds of lives, including mine.

5 years of relentless campaigning and the impossible was achieved. In April 2017, “DANII’s Gift” was partially realised. CGM was made available through Federal Funding to all T1D’s under the age of 21. I cannot describe the relief I felt. This device has had such a positive impact on absolutely every aspect of my entire family’s life. I had lived for 5 years in a constant state of sleep deprivation, compromising the care of my children, my ability to work, to manage my home and care for myself. I can now Sleep! I rely on CGM technology to alarm and

Firstly I want to say thank-you for being here tonight, supporting the foundation that changed our lives...

EVERY CHILD GROWS TO BE 21 YEARS ~ EVERY AUSTRALIAN DESERVES ACCESS TO THIS LIFE-SAVING AND LIFE-CHANGING TECHNOLOGY

wake me when Monique’s blood glucose falls or rises too quickly. During the day I can finally breathe, knowing an alarm will alert Monique or her teachers at school. She can attend a party or sleepover without the gut wrenching worry that something could go terribly wrong. She now has the space and freedom to be more independent, to be a “normal” teenager, to take on a part-time job and to learn to drive. But the biggest gain has been watching my beautiful, happy girl return. CGM has given her, her life back.

This makes me feel both gratitude and guilt. Why is Monique’s life more important than the 21 year old starting out in life, the 31 year old starting a family, the 41 year old trying to hold down a job and raise teenagers or..... Why is my sleep deprivation or my fear more valid than the mum of the 50 year old, living alone in another state? This privilege is not shared by an estimated 120,000 Type 1 Diabetics over the age of 21. They continue to live in fear, or bear the enormous costs of self-funding this life saving device, because unlike a pacemaker, it is not funded by Medicare or private health insurance.

Donna and Brian’s’ and the DANII Foundation’s mission was and still is all about saving lives. No just preventing death, but allowing all T1D’s and their families to be free of overwhelming fear and really live their lives.

My plea tonight is for each and every one of you to commit to saving the life of all Type 1 Diabetics’, by supporting the work of The DANII Foundation. Can you help us FIGHT ON and provide DANII’s Gift to every single T1D. We need your help to continue raising awareness, to provide education about advancements in T1D care, to continue providing support and education through loan and scholarship programs to improve the lives of T1d’s today and to change the status quo by lobbying for CGM to be made available and affordable for all T1’s.

For whatever contribution you can make, we say a heartfelt thank-you, because without the work and support of Donna, Brian and the DANII Foundation, I can honestly say Monique and I would most definitely not be “living life.”

Rachel & Monique Cambrey, Vic

“That’s my ambulance pulling away after responding to a Dexcom alarm. That’s the drive away after they come in bust in my door load me with IV dextrose bring me back sit with me for an hour until I level off. No CGM=no life for me. This is the grim reality. CGM’s are needed. Absolutely needed. Coverage is a must. I’m Ella and I support the DANII Foundation” Ella Arden Grace

“First day on CGM trial and it’s an absolute life changer!! I’ve gone back to work after insertion and caught a hypo before it happened. I can already see how beneficial this technology is. It shows my up and down trends making planning my next doses more accurate. Thanks so much DANII Foundation, looking forward to amazing numbers over the next 13 days.”Mitchell Cole

DANII FOUNDATION VISION AND VALUES

To make affordable, life-saving alert technology a reality for people with type 1 diabetes. To educate

and advocate for a Type ONE Voice.

A world where people with type 1 diabetes live without fear of never waking up.

Innovative, compassionate, inspirational, caring, driven, focused, brave.

What is Type 1 DiabetesDIABETES THE FACTS: Type 1 diabetes is the fastest growing chronic disease in Australian children. There are over 130,000 Australians with type 1 diabetes and with five new cases every day Australia has one of the highest rates in the world. The number of Australian children being diagnosed with this disease is increasing by almost 5% every year. Typically striking young people, type 1 diabetes destroys the ability to produce insulin, which is vital for life. It requires an essential daily regime of multiple injections or continuous infusion of insulin through a pump, as well as up to 12 finger-prick blood tests. Type 1 diabetes is associated with a significantly increased risk of serious health complications. An autoimmune disease, type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by a complex mixture of genetic and environmental factors but not by an unhealthy diet or obesity. The number of Australians diagnosed with diabetes is expected to grow to 3.5 million by 2033.

A DAY IN A LIFE

I HAVE A DIABETES STORY..!!

In 2013 my happy bubbly little 2 year old Aiden was not quite himself, he stopped dancing around stopped playing and laughing like he usually would. Instead he put himself in his room where he was super quiet and would just lay on his bed or floor and kept to himself.

Aiden was drinking litres of water every single day, his nappies would be soaked every single time including his pants and even his bedding overnight.

At this time I had my Mum living with us whom herself is Type 2 on Insulin, she knew the signs. I went to the Dr on a visit for myself and I told him of my concerns, he then said it was normal for young kids to drink so much but he also said it wouldn’t hurt to bring him in for a finger prick.

On September 11, 2013 my world was shattered and so was Aiden’s but he was too young to realise exactly what was going on. We were taken out the back to the Nurse’s station to have his finger prick done, first reading HI - cleaned his hands and then second reading HI.. Why, why my little boy what did he or I do to deserve this..!! I was in tears, his little worried face looking at mine wondering why mummy was so upset. I remember this day all too well, feels like yesterday.

We walked out of the Dr Surgery, I was a blubbering mess. We got across the road and the Dr had called and told me to go straight to hospital with Aiden. So for the next 6 nights this was our life. I was 37 weeks pregnant with my second child, laying on a fold out bed next to my then 2 year old son whose life was turned upside down. No longer could he just

eat what he wanted, without being given an injection. How is a parent supposed to inject their child every single day? Let me tell you, I had to wake up to myself and realise this is now our life, if I didn’t inject my child he would die. Obviously this was no option, I overcame my fear and I injected Aiden not only once but 3-4 times a day with a numerous amounts of finger pricks also.

Aiden was so brave, so strong he didn’t mind having his injections because to him - he was just like his Nanny. He use to help Nanny have her injections so to him he was ok with it.

We are now 5 years into life living with Type 1 Diabetes. We still struggle with levels daily however we are incredibly grateful to the DANII Foundation who fought for mum’s and dads like us to get the Australian Government to fund life-saving and life-changing Continuous Glucose Monitor. Before the funding it was financially difficult for us with Aiden’s disease. The CGM helps me keep our busy Aiden in range. Still with a youngster it’s a challenge, like walking a tight-rope measuring carbs, balancing exercise, sickness and so the list goes on. I will NEVER GIVE UP, as his mum, I will do my absolute best to make sure Aiden lives the life he deserves.

Now that the CGM is free for Aiden, I hope one day soon it will be funded for all Australian’s that live with Type 1 - we can see our child’s levels no matter where they are, so too should all T1Ds regardless of age. After all EVERY CHILD GROWS UP TO BE 21 ONE DAY – and so will our Aiden!

YOUR STORY IS OUR STORY

TRAVELLING DANII BEARSIn less than 6 months each of our bears have supported over 50 t1d’s with the specific goal to bring friendship and comfort and help spread awareness about “What is type 1 diabetes” across the globe!

While our DANII Friends ‘bear-sit’ they document their day to day lives of living with type 1 diabetes and all that entails. The travelling bears programme is gathering a rich collection of personal stories and importantly forging greater links between our supporters. New friendships have been formed, stories and experiences shared and even more support established.

This programme symbolises the mantra DANII lives by of impacting on the here and now, helping to improve daily lives. The photos tell us just how much we are making an impact. Our members stories, their trials and triumphs are woven into the organisation and carried forward in everything we do. These interactions are so simple yet very powerful in demonstrating the need to support Australians with type 1 diabetes, today and every day.

Can you support the travelling DANII bears programme? DANII Friends can buy a bear either here tonight or online at our website Shop and donate them back to the Foundation to help us spread the bear-love and much needed T1 diabetes advocacy work into wider communities.

In 2018 the Travelling DANII Bears Project was accelerated with the goal of connecting young and old children with type 1 diabetes across the globe.

Australian Girls ChoirThe Australian Girls’ Choir was established in 1984 by Judith Curphey OAM. Today there are over 4,000 girls learning to perform across Australia. DANII joined AGC when she was 7 and remained with the Choir for 12 years. We are thrilled that The AGC has accepted our offer of a DANII Foundation scholarship that was first awarded in 2013. In 2014 the DANII Foundation commenced a dual scholarship nationally – One to always go to a girl in NSW and the second scholarship to go to a girl in another Australian State.

DANII Foundation Australian Girls’ Choir Scholarship 2018CONGRATULATIONS go to Libby Abadee – Sydney, NSW & Olyvia Reimers – Adelaide, SA for winning our 2018 DANII Foundation Australian Girls’ Choir Scholarship. We believe Libby and Olyvia both 100% embody the characteristics required of the DANII Foundation Scholarship awards with some of their individual qualities that mimicked DANII being:

• She is an incredibly enthusiastic, eager and attentive member of the group

• She is a friend to all

• Her attendance at choir is outstanding, she never wants to miss it

• She is a very talented singer and performer

• Her leadership skills are starting to blossom

• She is always smiling and having a laugh

LIBBY ABADEE – Sydney, NSWLibby has been a part of the AGC since 2011 and is now a member of the most senior group, Performing Choir. In addition to her involvement in the Cantissimo and Canto specialist groups, Libby took part in the 2015 National Tour to South Australia and the 2016 International Tour to New Zealand. Libby is bubbly, dedicated and eager to learn.

OLYVIA REIMERS – Adelaide, SAOlyvia joined the AGC in 2014 and quickly progressed to the senior level, Performing Choir. Olyvia has been a member of the specially selected Canto vocal group and Danzare dance ensemble, and she was took part in the 2016 International Tour to New Zealand. Olyvia has received an obvious boost from the DANII Foundation scholarship; she displays a new found confidence that is infectious to the group.

Congratulations to both Libby and Olyvia. DANII wishes you every success for your future with the Australian Girls Choir and your future entertainment endeavours.

CAITLIN GOODINGCaitlin was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2012 at the age of 9 and is now 16 years old.

Caitlin is an incredible young lady who strives to make every day better than the last.

After experiencing years of deep depression and anxiety Caitlin was unable to participate in a normal school environment for close to 2 years. In 2017 Caitlin was awarded a scholarship for the DANII Foundation Jelly Bean Educational Cruise, an experience that was her turning point in her acceptance of living with Type 1 Diabetes. Meeting other young people who understand her challenges and the mentorship provided by others with T1D has helped Caitlin to build self-confidence and a level of respect for this ugly disease. With the support of her many new friends Caitlin made the decision to return to school in 2018 and is again participating in her passion for drama, singing and literature.

Caitlin would like to thank the DANII Foundation for the wonderful opportunities first in attending the life changing cruise and of course for the opportunity to perform tonight at the 2018 Jelly Bean Ball.

HITS N BEATS are a fresh and innovative band presenting a new style of party entertainment. Band Manager Brent Murphy and his team have supported DANII since creation of the Foundation.

In a post EDM world, Hits n Beats meld a rockin’ live band (with both male and female lead vocals) with the beats and loops that make a contemporary dance floor come alive... a continuous stream of blockbuster hits, Hits n Beats are exactly what the name suggests.

PAULINI CURUENAVULI With her incredible voice, stunning looks and engaging personality, Paulini is one of Australia’s most uniquely talented performers. The Fijian-born singer songwriter enthralled the nation on the inaugural series of ‘Australian Idol’. Audiences instantly fell in love with Paulini’s impressive octave range – a voice still unrivalled, and like no other in this country.

Since then Paulini has forged a hugely successful career. Originally hailing from humble roots, her rise to the top has been nothing short of inspiring. She is still one of only 10 Australian female solo artists to have a #1 album on the Australian ARIA Charts.

Most recently, Paulini played the lead role in the international award-winning musical The Bodyguard. Paulini is reprising the impressive lead musical role which her idol Whitney Houston made so famous in The Bodyguard in 1992.

With an illustrious career already, now back in Australia, looking and sounding more incredible than ever, Paulini is excited to be embarking on her theatrical debut and sharing her voice yet again with her fans and new audiences both here in Australia and internationally.

TYPE 1 DIABETIC JOURNEY ~ FIGHT ON…It’s 3 a.m.

You wake up in a cold sweat with your heart pounding. As you try to quietly sneak out of bed without waking up your boyfriend/girlfriend you can feel your blood sugar crashing.

You stumble to the kitchen and wonder why you didn’t wake up. Your hands shake like crazy while you gather carbs and manually check your blood sugar.

2.1 flashes across the screen.

As you instinctively feel this number dropping you start consuming carbs. Juice, crackers, glucose tabs, etc. YOU CANNOT STOP. Your mind is in survival mode and it literally feels like you are dying. You want to eat until the racing heartbeat, trembling hands, dizziness, and cold sweat goes away. Afterwards you feel guilty for not following the “diabetic rule” of eating/drinking 15 to 30 carbs and waiting.

Slowly you your body starts to relax. You feel like you are finally in control again. You recheck your blood sugar after a short amount of time and see it’s at a normal level.

You can barely keep your eyes open because you are so exhausted. Do you stay up longer to see if rises above 5.0 or have faith that it will stay and remain steady at 4.4 without dropping again? Sleep sounds so good after this.

This is a glimpse of living with type 1 Diabetes. There is no cure. Technology that is available today would help me so much. Like me, there are many diabetics who can’t afford CGMs (Continuous* Glucose Monitoring) devices. Most people have to depend solely on their self-awareness or trust in their loved one to find them. Many are even unable to wake up when their blood sugar is low. Do you know what happens for them? I will give you a clue: Hypoglycaemia or “low blood sugars” while sleeping is one of the main causes of death in MY Type 1 community. D e a t h.

Diabetes is not a joke. It is a CONSTANT mental, physical, and emotional battle we deal with 24.7. You cannot see the fight we fight or the effect it has on us. Living with an “invisible” disease is what we do every single day. There is no pause button or stopping it.

This is just a small glimpse of living with Type 1 Diabetes. My disease is more than just a punchline. CGM made affordable would be a life-saver and game-changer for so many T1D’s just like me. I pray every-day that our Australian Government will recognise that just because you turn 21 doesn’t mean that my Type 1 will go away!

TROY’S STORY

LIFE-SAVING DEVICE FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES TOO EXPENSIVEContinuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is a technology where patients have a small filament inserted into the skin that sends a blood glucose reading to a monitor every five minutes, day and night.

Since trialing the technology through a grant from type 1 diabetes advocacy charity the DANII Foundation, Mr Wilkins said the device has saved his life by alerting him to dangerously low blood sugar levels.

“I had no idea before I started that my blood sugar levels were dropping critically low every single night,” he said.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease which destroys the insulin-creating cells in the pancreas, leaving the patient to rely on daily insulin injections and around-the-clock monitoring. There is no known cause or cure.

While CGM offers the most effective and least intrusive way to monitor the condition and avoid “dead in bed syndrome”, Mr Wilkins said he won’t be able to continue after his trial because the cost is too high.

“I’m worried that I’m not going to wake up the next morning because I’m going to have low blood sugar overnight,” Mr Wilkins said.

The technology costs between $3500 and $6000 per year. The DANII Foundation was involved in lobbying the federal

government for funding of CGM for under 21 year olds.Cofounder of the DANII Foundation, Donna Meads-Barlow,

said the technology could have saved her daughter, Daniella, who died overnight in November 2011.

“We’ve got about 140,000 Australians living with type one diabetes and approximately 20,000 are under 21,” Mrs Meads-Barlow said.

A SMALL DEVICE HAS REVOLUTIONISED THE LIVES OF THOSE WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES, INCLUDING THE LIFE OF BURNIE MAN TROY WILKINS.

“That’s still 120,000 not covered by the government funding.”

The foundation provides scholarships for T1D educational cruises and for CGM trials for people, including Mr Wilkins.

“To see the transformation in his life and the help that he’s received is so gratifying, that is what keeps us so inspired to keep doing what we do,” she said.

Fund a type 1 into a LIFE-CHANGING Educational Scholarship through The DANII FoundationSponsor a type 1 and their parent or carer into a life changing educational experience. The annual Jellybean Cruise changes the lives of Type 1 diabetics and their families by providing the best education and support in a ‘one stop shop’ that is not offered anywhere else. So many Type 1’s don’t receive adequate education and support to safely manage their diabetes. This is the difference between good management, and risking the terrible consequences of poor management, which include blindness and amputation. Your donation will enable a Type 1 and their carer this very unique education and support experience. The Foundation will offer scholarships to low income families and individuals who would normally be unable to attend. Help transform the day to day life of a T1d and their carer with $3000 *Multiples Available

27/5/18 2:29 pm

Tonight we have over 120 Silent Auction items - these will all be featured in a separate Ballot Bidding Brochure prepared by Helping Hand.Tonight for our Silent Auction Items, we are running a system called Ballot Bidding. On your table, each of you will find a Ballot Bidding form which lists all of the amazing items on offer. Some which you may have already seen displayed in our Jelly Bean Auction Gallery when you arrived.

To place a bid please fill out the required information on the top of this form and place your desired one time only maximum bid amount in the space next to the item/s you like.

Please note you may be successful on more than one of your bids. The items designated as ‘one only available’ will be sold to the highest bidder only and the items designated as ‘multiples available’ will be offered in order from the highest bidder down (until the limited quantities are sold)

Once your form is completed, please hold it up in the air and one of our helpers in the DANII shirts will collect it from you. Alternatively, you can place your completed forms in the Ballot Boxes provided.

Ballot Bidding will close 15 minutes after the Live Auction, so remember to listen for the closing announcement.

All successful bidders will be notified by SMS and one of our friendly helpers in the DANII shirts will come to you at your table, to finalise the payment and arrange your item(s).

Remember: you only get one chance to bid, so make your bid count!

“2 more sleeps until Joshy gets to use the CGM (Continuous Glucose Moitoring) to help with his Type 1 diabetes. This is only made possible because of the funding approval from the govt. But that was only approved because of the active lobbying from the T1D community here in Australia - led by Donna Meads Barlow and the DANII Foundation. We are very grateful recipients of all your tireless work.” Julina King

A CHILD

#isupportdaniifoundation

Will not outgrowType 1 Diabetes.

Type 1 is not reversible and

Exercise and healthy eating

Will not cure it.

#isupportdaniifoundation

No matter how hard they try as children, or how hard they work as an adult, the blood glucose levels of a person with Type 1 will not truly “stabilise”. Life with type 1 means good days, highs, lows, constant monitoring, insulin dosing, carb counting and adjusting.

There’s reallyno such thing as“under control”

#isupportdaniifoundation

A person with Type 1 Diabetesmust take insulin every day or

they will die.No amount of healthy eating,

exercise or carefully concocted

herbal remedy will ever eliminate

the need for insulin.

#isupportdaniifoundation

There’s noprevention.Nothing the person (or patient) did or did not do could have prevented the onset of Type 1 Diabetes. No amount of healthy eating or exercise can stop the unknown trigger that causes the body to mistakenly attack and destroy the insulin producing cells within the pancreas.
