What is AP?

• Advanced Placement courses give students access to college level coursework but with the support of high school teachers and peers.

• Advanced Placement courses provide the opportunity to EARN COLLEGE CREDIT through AP Exams taken at the end of the school year.

• AP courses tend to be fast paced and cover more material.

• More time, both in and out of the classroom, is required to complete assignments and homework.

• AP teachers expect students to think critically, analyze and synthesize facts and data, weigh competing perspectives, and write clearly and persuasively.

• Gwinnett County awards an additional 10 points to your semester average for each AP course taken.– For example, if you earn a “natural” 82%, the

teacher will add the additional 10 points to the gradebook for a FINAL AVERAGE of 92%. The grade of 92 will be recorded on your official transcript.

How does this affect HOPE?

• The HOPE scholarship committee removes the weighted portion of the student's grade and performs a recalculation in order to determine eligibility for the HOPE Scholarship. – 4.0 Grading Scale is 90-100 = A (4.0); 80-89 = B (3.0);

74-79 = C (2.0); 70 – 73 = D (1.0); 69 and below = F (0.0)– For example, HOPE takes the “natural” 82% and converts

to a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 grading scale) and adds .5. The final HOPE calculation would be a 3.5 and the final TRANSCRIPT would show a final grade of 95.

AP Exams

• Administered by schools across the nation on set dates each May

• Exams are usually 3 hours and contain both multiple choice and free-response questions

• Students take their first exam for free after a $10 registration fee. Additional AP exams are $89 per exam.

• Scores range from 1 – 5. Many colleges grant credit based on a score of 3 or better on the exam.

• Visit with teachers to find out about the curriculum, pre-requisite coursework, and amount of time required outside of class.

• Talk with students who are currently in AP courses. What advice can they share with you?

• Talk as a family about your child’s academic goals for high school as well as plans for college
