LaserSpeed® is solving a range ofmanufacturing application challenges

>> OLGThere’s been some real traction in Europe with using LaserSpeed for cut control applicationsin paper, plastic film, tapes, and labeling. Many plant operators are faced with measurementinaccuracies from rotary encoders (as high as 2%), requiring them to continuously check thecut length accuracy via hand or weight measurements and adjust the product line to keepcut lengths within specification. This positions LaserSpeed as the optimal solutionbecause of its materials measurement versatility, customizable pulse rates (up to 5MHz),and high accuracy and repeatability (±0.05% to 0.02%). Another big selling point is thatLaserSpeed is MID certified and meets the 2004/22/EG standard for length measure-ment.

In the Americas, we’ve seen increased interest from paper manufacturers and roofingmaterial producers. For example, a paper manufacturer was giving away 2.5% of itsproduct due to inaccurate length measurements and having problems with flying spiceapplications (splicing a new parent reel of paper with the tail of the expiring reel at highspeeds to ensure continuous length). LaserSpeed is offering an estimated savings of $370,000/yr. Another example isa roofing felt manufacturer experiencing roll length and cut-to-length inaccuracies of 1.5% due to unreliable rotaryencoder readings. After implementing LaserSpeed, the manufacturer eliminated $88,565/yr in product lengthgive-away. For more information, read the application notes in the Partner Toolbox.

Beta LaserMike presents technical paper on recent advances in lasernon-contact measurement to steel producers at ABM Brazil 2011>> MetalsLes Jensen, LaserSpeed product manager at Beta LaserMike, will be delivering a technicalpaper presentation to steel producers on the latest breakthroughs in non-contact laser mea-surement technology at the upcoming ABM Brazil 2011 technical conference in Santos, Brazil(October 24-27). The technical paper is entitled “Overcoming Mechanical Issues in ObtainingAccurate, Stable Length and Speed Measurements in Steel Mills and Billet Caster Applications.”

The technical paper is a must read and an excellent sales reference tool for those wanting tobetter understand how LaserSpeed provides highly accurate length and speed measurementsin applications such as billet casters, slab casters, plate length, cold rolling mills, and tensionstretch leveling. Les sets the stage as follows: “Steel manufacturers have tobe more efficient and improve product quality to be more competitive. Thekey is to replace inaccurate, contact-type measurement devices with highlyaccurate non-contact gauges like LaserSpeed throughout the manufacturingprocess. LaserSpeed offers ±0.05% accuracy and applications flexibility, enabling manufacturers to realize numerous bottom-line benefits in quality, productivity, and waste reduction.” This technical paper will be available inlate October. Offer a 4-axis scanning solution for flaw detection

>> Wire & CableHave you ever run into a competitive situation where more than 2-axis scanning wasrequired for a flaw detection application? Well, we have a solution that enables youto offer customers a 4-axis measurement system. It stems from our “specials”systems work and includes the use of two 2-axis AccuScan diameter gauges coupledwith a DataPro 3100 controller to give you 4-axis measurement capabilities. Thecombination provides greater coverage around the circumference of the product soyou can perform better ovality measurements and detect more flaws, such as lumpsand neckdowns, with higher certainty. This is especially critical on larger productswhere there is more area to scan. We’ve had great success with this solution withseveral customers.

The dual 2-axis AccuScan setup enables you to offer a flaw-detection measurementsolution that cannot be accomplished with a 2- or 3-axis system. From a price versusperformance standpoint, this system offers real value that enables customers todetect a higher percentage of flaws at an appealing price point. If you have a unique flaw detectionapplication, please contact your regional sales manager to discuss the details. Ask for the “flaw detectioncalculator” to help you determine the right system solution. The calculator enables you to enter the size ofthe flaw to detect and product circumference to measure to determine the appropriate number of axes forthe application.

Golf Anyone?>> Medical Extrusion/MetrologyBeta LaserMike designed a unique setof BenchMike fixtures for the UnitedStates Golf Association (USGA) tomeasure golf grips. The fixtures consistof a standard Beta LaserMike DigitalReadout Slide (p/n 83617) and a specialrotating chuck designed for the DROslide. Chuck sizes include:

> AM7845 – Chuck Size 1/8” to 5/8”

> AM7902 – Chuck Size 0 to 1/2”

Using these two fixtures, users canrotate a part via BenchMike’s fixtureoutput andget the linearpositionoutput fromthe DRO slide. This information is displayed onBenchMike. The encoder function onthe DRO slide enables users to accu-rately measure the same location onmultiple rotating parts while usingBenchMike’s measurement functions.

While initially developed for the USGA,these fixtures can be used in anyapplication that requires the measure-ment of multiple positions along arotating part as well as TIR/Ovality ormax/min sizing.

Unique system configuration offers competitiveadvantage in tube production

>> Tube & PipeBeta LaserMike offers several different system configurations for tubeproduction applications. For example, System Configuration -22 is widelyused by medical and tubing manufacturers. This configuration includesAccuScan to measure the product OD and UltraScan in the trough tomeasure the wall thickness and calculate the ID. Recently, one of ourcompetitors (a company by the name of Z-something) has added a featureto their tube production system solution that makes it similar to ourconfiguration -22 …and they’re using it to aggressively compete on projects.

We need to let customers know that Beta LaserMike has offered thissystem configuration for many years before the competition. In addition,we also offer a System Configuration -23. It’s basically the same setupas configuration -22, but offers the added capability to measure theproduct OD in the trough with UltraScan. This allows tube makers tomeasure product shrinkage between the Ultrascan OD and AccuScan ODmeasurements. Plus, UltraScan offers the added advantage of our patentedSnap Technology which is simple to use. To learn more about the variousTube Production System Configurations, visit our Partner Toolbox.

Optimizing calibration of your laserdiameter gauge (by Dave Bochenek)

Often times we’re asked if there is any way to improve theperformance of our diameter gauge. In some cases wecan. It depends on the diameter gauge and the size ofproduct the customer is measuring. Here are some tips:

> If the size range is only a small portion of the total gate area, we cancalibrate the customer’s equipment using standards that are closer tothe actual product.

> As a rule of thumb, you cannot go below 25% of the gate area.

> For example, a customer using a 1” gauge must use two pins that are at least .25”.

Following these simple guidelines will deliver the added diametermeasurement performance your customer is looking for.
