I was TIRED of being sick & having
no hope of getting better. I didn’t
desire a LIFE of meds!
I have been a believer of chiropractic medicine since childhood,
but it wasn’t until I came to HealthWorks my LIGHT was turned
on.
A friend referred me to HealthWorks . After taking the exam, Dr.
Taylor explained the personal care program she recommended.
At that very moment, my LIGHT turned on. Everything Dr. Jen
was describing, subluxation, nutrition, whole foods, etc. was the
refreshing healing ray of hope I was searching for.
I’m a proud HealthWorks FAMILY member since January 2012
and my journey has been a body, spirit and soul AWAKENING.
My journey results include:
20 lbs. lighter without feeling starved or
deprived (a doable life style)
No high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or
diabetes.
Off all prescriptions as of Sept. 1 (MD
approved). Including: Estrogen and ADD
prescriptions.
No body pain, headaches imbalance or
depression.
High levels of energy and strength
Increased awareness regarding food and their
nutritional healing power
Awareness regarding strength training
Proof eating natural organic food IS budget
friendly
Thank you, Dr. Taylor, Dr. Porterfield
and HealthWorks staff, for TURNING
MY LIGHT ON!
“If only someone could reach up
under my skull and fix that area of
the spine, my life would be
better.”

Practical Paleo
by Diane Sanfilippo,
BS, NC
$24.99 at COSTCO on
I-75
4.5 stars
This book is 1/4
explanation of body
processes and
nutrition, 1/4
customized meal
plans for different
body conditions and
types, 1/2 recipes.
PROS: Lots of grain-
free and low carb
recipes to tempt your
taste buds. So far
we’ve tried the Swirly
Crustless Quiche, the
Chorizo Meatballs,
and the (drumroll….)
BACON-ase! Yes,
that’s exactly what it
sounds like. All three
recipes got thumbs up
from the teenagers.
CONS: Paleo in
general dismisses
legumes and dairy,
both of which have a
place in traditional
diets. So, feel free to
add a side of soaked
beans or cheese.
Additionally, several
places in the
cookbook recommend
“skimming off the fat”
which we know is
extremely important
for our health. In
some recipes a
microwave is used,
which we know
degrades the nutrition
of the food and should
only be used to store
bread, never cook
with. One last caveat,
none of the recipes
remind you to presoak
the nuts so keep that
in mind and pre-plan.
I’ve been using the
term “paleo” to find
adaptable recipes to
widen our traditional
diet fare. There’s
LOTS available online,
but one distinct
advantage to owning
an actual cookbook is
that this baby gives
me ideas I’d never
think to search for…
like baconase.
Paleo Comfort
Foods
by Julie & Charles
Mayfield
$18.99 at COSTCO
4.5 stars
This cookbook
contains some 300
southern comfort type
recipes ranging from
fried chicken, fried
okra, gumbo and pie
crusts.
PRO: Where else are
you going to find tried
& true improvements
to your favorite
comfort foods? Eating
healthy doesn’t have
to mean sacrificing
taste. In fact, TRUE
health foods should
taste delicious full of
savory and rich
flavors.
CONS: Again,
because this is a paleo
cookbook it doesn’t
mention soaking nuts
(or legumes, which are
excluded all together).
Also, dairy is absent,
so you’ll have to work
it in yourself if you’re
a lactovore.
Another highly
recommended! Let
me know what your
favorite recipe is!

Butternut Squash Pancakes
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, squash, syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla until well-blended. In a smaller, separate bowl, whisk together the almond flour, salt and baking soda. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing just enough to ensure there are no lumps.
Lightly grease a griddle with your fat of choice (butter, lard, coconut oil, etc) and heat just until a drop of water placed on the griddle sizzles briefly before evaporating. Using a ladle or small measuring cup, pour the batter by the scant 1/4
cupful onto the griddle and cook just until bubble appear on the surface. Carefully flip and cook on the other side until the pancake is done, about one
minute more.
Place on a plate, cover and keep warm; repeat the previous steps until all of the batter has been used. Serve warm with additional maple syrup, if desired.
Nutrition (per serving): 184 calories, 10.5g total fat, 93mg cholesterol, 176.5mg sodium, 335.4mg
potassium, 15.8g carbohydrates, 3.9g fiber, 8g sugar, 3.7g protein.
2 large eggs 1/2 cup butternut squash, roasted and mashed
2 tablespoons maple syrup 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 2/3 cup almond flour 1/8 teaspoon kosher or sea salt 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

to reserve seating.
Mindful Mommy to be:
Designed to empower couples looking for an optimally healthy pregnancy and birthing experience. Understanding basic nutrition- why your body and your baby need certain foods
- allows you to make nourishing choices. Effectively using positive talk, relaxation techniques, and stress coping tools can allow you to embrace birthing instead of fearing it. Knowing the process of pregnancy and how a woman’s body develops along with the baby
eases the process and reduces stress. $20 for each couple.
Weston A Price Chapter Meetings:
Tired of confusing nutrition "trends"? Learn how to prepare and eat traditional foods like our ancestors. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member to attend chapter meetings. To find out more about WAP Foundation, visit www.westonaprice.org. Free for all.

Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is the psychological acupressure technique I routinely use in my practice and most highly recommend to optimize your emotional health. Free for all.
Taming the Sugar Beast:
This sweet poison is hidden in many places we wouldn’t even expect- it hurts our immune system and causes premature aging. Find out where it’s hidden and SAFE alternatives. Free
for all.
Book Club:
We choose two books a year that focus on an aspect of health & wellbeing to read and discuss as a group. Books are typically 2-300 pages and read over the course of 3-4 months. This is a laid-back, easy way to expand your health knowledge. Free for all,
practice members receive complimentary books.

Thanksgiving is a time for us all to be
thankful.
Thankful for friends and family that support us throughout the year.
And a time to think about those who need our support.
The kids at Renner Middle School are in need:
According to the US Bureau of Statistics, Plano is 6.2% unemployed, and this is
hitting the students of Renner Middle School especially hard. Teachers at the school
have asked for support from our community to help these students as the cold winter
months approach.
We often think of poverty as a problem a far off country might face, not right here in
our own community. HealthWorks is dedicated to doing everything we can to
combat need in our own backyard.
This year’s Thanks for Giving event will be held from
November 1st - November 31st.
In exchange for a donation HealthWorks will be providing complimentary
consultations, exams and spinal screenings for new patients to the office.
Current members of the practice will be entered into a drawing to win a Healthy
Families prize pack in acknowledgement of their donations.
The most-needed items include new or very gently used jeans and coats, or gift
cards for clothing (all sizes are accepted, but large preteen sizes are most needed).
All donations will support the needy students of Renner Middle School.
