Be Like Mike
Kenneth Pinckley
In the 1990’s Michael Jordan was the man! It seemed that no one
could stop him on the court. The Chicago Bulls won 6 NBA
championships and he won the MVP award several years. At
Michael Jordan’s (MJ) career was at his peaked he appeared in
movies like Space Jam. He sparked a special expression and later a
movie. The expression is “Wanna be like Mike.” Basically meaning
that we want to be like Michael Jordan. Is there a similar expression
in the Bible or our lives? Who would you want to “be like?”
Several people come to mind initially. Men like Paul, Peter, James,
John, Luke, and Barnabas. All great men to imitate in our lives. First
and foremost the one I believe gives us the best example is Jesus
Christ (Heb 4:14-16). We can all strive to imitate Jesus Christ on
earth. Yet there is a lesser known character. A man that we might
overlook because his role is minor. A man who is overshadowed by
his brother Peter. A man named Andrew.
Andrew dropped everything to follow Jesus. A trait we all need in
our lives. We must be willing to drop the things that distract us from
following after Jesus. Andrew left his family, friends, and his
occupation in order to learn and serve along side Jesus. Jesus has
called each of us to deny themselves and pick up his cross and follow
after me (Matthew 16: 24-28; Mark 8:34-38).
Andrew continually brought people to Jesus. He brought his brother
Peter. Andrew heard the message of Jesus and knew Peter needed to
hear it. So he left to find his brother to bring him Jesus. Andrew also
was the one who brought the boy with 2 loaves and 5 fish to Jesus.
So the question is who was the last one you brought to Jesus? Are
you actively seeking someone who is lost? While much is not written
about Andrew’s ministry after Jesus, we can apply his efforts of
bringing souls to Jesus to our lives.
