Notes on the Scripture Either with family or friends, I love to gather around the table to share a meal. Every time we do it we are brought closer and we learn more about each other. Meals can have that kind of power. Think of a meal where you sat down with strangers and departed with new friends. Per-haps that is why a meal—the Eucharist—is at the center of our worship and why meals figure so prominently in the gospels. We all know of the Last Supper and the Wedding Feast at Cana. But less often remembered is the story of the dispirited disciples who, after the Crucifixion, head to Emmaus and along the way encounter a stranger. They do not recognize that it is the risen Christ who walks be-side them until they all sit down to a meal and he breaks bread with them. A good meal has that revelatory power—we can come to know and be known for who we truly are. Share a meal today with someone you want to know better. Watch what happens when you break bread together! Congratulations Speaking about the meals together. This weekend we are celebrating our First Communions and some of our second graders are approaching the table of the Eucharist for the very first time. As they experience God through the Eucharistic Meal I hope and pray that they can grow closer with Him and our church community. Congratulations!!! Our Lady of Fatima Novena We joyfully thank God for the great gift of Our Lady’s apparitions in Fati-ma, Portugal 100 years ago. The closeness of Our Lady to us and her call to return to the Gospel through prayer, sacrifice and conversion are as important for us today as they were in 1917. Please, join us, for the novena celebrations (9 days of prayers) at 8:30am, starting on May 4th until May 13th. Thank You The Holy Week was so wonderful and the church looks beautiful! I hear many of those comments and I think we all agree with them. At the same time it takes a lot of hard work to make it so nice, and so I want to take another opportunity to express my gratitude to all the ministers, helpers and volunteers for their hard work. It is impossible to maintained every-body by name, but I am truly grateful to all of you. Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!

The Lights of the World by Josh Zubik

To do small things with great love is one of the most important missions we are called to carry out as Catholics. We are all called to this universal mis-sion, this universal ministry to be the salt of the earth and lights to the world, perhaps not in a big way, but neverthe-less in a significant way. Over the past four years, I have all been called to an additional ministry, my parish, St. Francis of Assisi’s, Youth Ministry. There I have learned a great deal on how to share this immense love. During the three mission trips, the four days at the Na-tional Catholic Youth Confrence, and the numerous food pantry visits, this ministry has introduced me to many saints. For example, there’s Ms. Lillie who is a beacon of hope caring for an entire Detroit neighborhood. Or Carrie Prendergass who is the only person that I know who can serve a week at the Twin Cities’ Catholic Heart Youth Camp and work as a full-time nurse the next. Or even my wacky Youth Lead-er, Matt Toohilll, who always knows how to light up a room and bring a smile to your face no matter how bad your day was. All three exemplify the role of being Salt and Light. More than that, they show me a way to continue and share my faith. Not only have the adults that I have encountered within this group been beacons of light, but also my peers. One of the most surprising things that I have gained through Youth Ministry has been, well, my friends. Their joy, laughter, and kindness have been such a welcomed and helpful presence in my life. More than that, I val-ue our shared spirituality because I know that they are coming from a good place and are guiding me to becoming the best Christian I can be. In this way, they are also role models and lights in my life. Because of the friendship and fellowship that they share with me I am a better person. Not only has Youth Ministry given me role models, both adult and teen, but it has


also given me an opportunity to let my light shine. This group has been a catalyst and a passage way for me to get off my pew and act on what I heard during the homily. I can tell you with the truest sincerity that the best part about this ministry was the service. In the prayer of St. Francis, there is a line that says, “For it is in giving that we receive.” We recited this prayer daily in my class at my grammar school, but I never knew what it meant until I began Youth Ministry. I would like to take you back four years to my first major activity with Youth Min-istry. It was a mission trip to Missouri. There we helped open a Salvation Ar-my that would benefit the tornado re-covery effort for the surrounding com-munity. The best part about that trip was not the food or that time I jumped off a waterfall, twice, it was strangely the nine hour ride back to civilization at the end of the trip. I remember just hav-ing this really innate, inward joy. It was then that I learned that when we are lights of the world, we gain as much as we give. In the same way, when we an-swer the call to this universal ministry, to do small things with great love, we also receive that same great love. You are all in this room today because you have shown this love. I hope and pray that you continue to share this love, continue to be salt of the earth and lights of the world. Thank you.

Yet, facing fear, anxiety and over-whelming sadness can lead to embracing a new life. It is possible to once again know happiness and live with a full heart. A F will offer a morning of reflection on the journey of a grieving spouse. Widowed at the age of 25 and with an infant son, Amy is a grief coach and helps people who are grieving a life-changing loss.

It was wonderful to see so many attending Easter Mass and the Holy Week liturgies! I was pleased to celebrate some of these liturgies and then, with re-lief, as the retired pastor, to have limited responsibility for all that is involved. Thanks and Praise for all who did so much to allow all to celebrate so well this Feast of Faith. And thanks to Fr. Artur for his invitation to assist. A few people mentioned that they enjoy reading these reflections. I was pleased to hear that – and some offered comments for the future – which I will fol-low up. Since we do no “market research” I have no way of knowing your re-sponse, so if you have com-ments or suggestions, please send them, [email protected] These next weeks will re-turn to the principles which our building committee de-veloped. The topic for this section is: A SPACE DEDICATED TO WORSHIP “The worship space we seek to create will, above all else, serve as a suitable environment for the liturgi-cal prayer of the parish. We envision this space as be-ing liturgically flexible*, not a multi-purpose facility. It will be space totally dedicat-ed to prayer. We will be guided by the norms set out in the General Instruction of

and in the Eucharistic ele-ments of bread and wine. Therefore great care and attention will be given to the baptismal font, the place of proclamation, (ambo) and the table of the Lord (altar). Because each signifies a way in which Christ lives among us. The baptismal font is placed at the entrance of the Church to remind us of our entrance into the church through the waters of Baptism. Our font is large enough for a baby to be baptized by immersion – the water is heated. (Many mothers worry about this method, so most babies are baptized by pouring). The water continually flows to communicate that the water of Baptism is life giv-ing. There is a large bronze plate at the font. This is removed at the Easter vigil and underneath is a place for adults to kneel when they are baptized. At a funeral, the casket is wheeled in and placed on that bronze cover. This gesture recalls that we begin and then end at the font. The priest bless the casket with the water from the font and then covers the casket with a “white pall” to remind all of the life of faith which began at Baptism.

God’s law was necessary for this. When the people departed from God’s law, this led to sin and often to disaster. So, a prophet saw the signs of the times and understood the conse-quences by divine revela-tion. “He speaks from the perspective of God as perceived from the per-spective of his own situa-tion.” (Abraham Heshcel) The prophet was a mes-senger of God who stood in the presence of God. He had a very difficult task because his mes-sage was challenging and one of impending disas-ter. However, the mes-sage always ended with mercy, hope, and re-demption. Could the Old Testament prophets see the future? The prophets are often seen as fortune tellers. However, they are more like weathermen. The people who predict the weather look at tempera-tures, barometric pres-sure, radar information, etc. Based on this infor-mation and the help of a computer, they can rea-sonably make a weather forecast. They can predict disasters like tornadoes and hurricanes because the conditions are right for these storms. Prophets understood the signs of their times. They could see a storm coming. A prophet was given a divine understanding of a human situation. He knew that God wants justice and righteousness from His people. If the people were in a right relationship with God, this would lead to their happiness and wellbeing. Obedience to

Whether you enjoyed a peaceful and quiet brunch or dinner alone or with family on Easter Sunday or after that magnificent meal you made was finished and the cleanup began, it was a wonderful day. Even though the jelly beans (especially the smashed ones) were scraped from the uphol-stery, peeps removed from their hiding places and the chocolate was gently wiped from the drapes, there were no real glitches except for the little one who cried because she didn’t like green beans. I really love the Easter season. There are so many things to do in preparation, so many things to think over. We are truly blessed. How else do we get so many chances and choices to redeem ourselves. Out comes the kindness and thoughtfulness to our brothers and sisters: the charity and giving of our-selves as we are remind-ed that this is what Jesus taught. We remember, regret and repent for the wrongdoings. We pray and witness. The excitement of the Easter vigil and renewal

of Baptismal vows and the welcome to those who are new; it is a fantastic start; new light, new life.

May the joy of this time penetrate deeply into our souls so that we do not push its meaning aside and soon forget the rea-son for this celebration.

KNOWLEDGE AND PRAYER PROGRAM

“PROTECTING YOUR CHURCH”

We have plans for emergencies in our schools, shopping centers, and movie thea-ters. Why not our churches? Come to St. Francis of Assisi Center, 15050 S. Wolf Rd. Orland Park, 7 PM on Tuesday May 16th to find out what needs to be done. The purpose of the "Protecting Your Church" program is to bring to the attention of Church parishioners and leaders, the dangers that we could all face today in our own Churches. The presentation will high-light the fact that MOST of the churches in the USA have no plan what-soever in place about how to respond to a "dangerous incident" and who at the church would be responsible to respond to such an incident. In general, our churches are not at all prepared or equipped to deal with danger-ous or inflammatory situations. The presenters are both well versed in person-al safety and personal security matters. Bruce Johnson, is the President of Integrity Security Personnel, and is a 25 year veteran of the Illi-nois State Police. Tim Dilbeck, is a personal safety instructor, and is active in the pro-life movement in Chicago. The program will enlighten all of us as to what to expect during a dangerous incident, and how to respond responsibly. The presentation is based upon the premise that it is not so much "if a dangerous incident may occur", but how to respond to a dangerous situation "when it occurs". With all that is happening to Church's throughout the world, now is the ide-al time for such a program. Your attendance is welcomed and appreciated. This unique program is sponsored by the Re-spect Life Ministries of St. Bernard’s, St. Fran-cis of Assisi, St. Michael, Our Lady of the Woods and Annunciation Byzantine in co-operation with Knights of Columbus local councils.

MILITARY CHAPLAIN SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Archdiocese of Military Services USA has 800 positions for chaplains but only have 210 active duty Catholic priests serving the brave

men and women of our Armed Forces.

The Knights of Columbus are actively supporting the scholarship of

seminarians to help fill this vacancy. Currently 5 men have been recently ordained

and 37 seminarians are in the program.

On May 20 and 21, Armed Forces Day and weekend, men of our council will be stationed

in the narthex and the bell tower after each Mass to “pass the helmet” for any donation

you can give to help support this important cause.

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima apparitions. To honor this special occasion, you are invited to participate in our parish novena (9 days) of prayer. At 8:30 am, starting May 4, the rosary and nove-na prayer will be recited in the Church. On Saturday, May 13th, a special Mass to hon-or of Our Lady of Fatima will be celebrated at 8:30 AM, followed by May Crowning.

We celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13th. On this day in 1917, Our Lady made her first appearance to three shepherd children, Jacinta (age 7), Francisco (age 9) and Lucia (age 10), at Fatima in Portu-gal. She appeared to them once a month from May through October. The lives of the three children of Fatima were entirely trans-formed by the heavenly apparitions. While fulfilling the duties of their state with the great-est fidelity, those children seemed now to live only for prayer and sacrifice, which they of-fered in a spirit of reparation to obtain peace and the conversion of sinners. They deprived themselves of water during the periods of great heat; they gave their lunch to poor children; they wore around their waists thick cords that even drew blood; they ab-stained from innocent pleasures and urged one another to the practice of prayer and pen-ance with an ardor comparable to that of the great saints.

Religious Education Religious Education meets on alternating Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays for Grades K-8, and on Saturdays for Grades 1-8, at the Religious Education Center. Grades K-4 meet from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. and grades 4-8 meet from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday sessions meet from 8:30—10:00 a.m. Children's Liturgy of the Word meets on Sun-days during the 9 & 10:30 a.m. masses for children 4-years-old to 4th grade, September-April. The Joseph Cardinal Bernardin School, located on the campus of St. Elizabeth Seton parish at 167th and 94th Ave., is the elementary Catholic regional school for parishioners of St. Francis. For registration information, contact the school at 410-6525.

Become a Catholic R.C.I.A. - The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Anyone interested in becoming a Catholic, please contact the parish office at 460-0042.

Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated every Monday, immediately after the 7:45 a.m. Mass. Those of advanced age or suf-fering from a chronic or serious illness are invited to be anointed. The priests are available to offer the Sacrament whether the ill person is at home or in the hospital. Please call 460-0042.

Baptisms

Baptisms usually take place on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sundays of the month at 1:30. Prior to the Baptism, parents need to call the office to make arrangements. A baptismal conference will be set up with the parents.

Marriages Weddings need to be scheduled at least four to six months in advance upon approval of a priest. Couples are reminded to secure the church date before the reception hall. Please check our website for more de-tails.

Sacrament of Reconciliation Communal celebration of the Sacrament will be held during Advent and Lent. Individual confessions are heard on Saturdays at 11:30-12:00.
