WORKSHOPS

(PICK ONE) Effective Volunteer Engagement Learn ways to identify and engage local volunteers, to provide meaningful experiences for them, and to retain them with your organization. Facilitators: MDS Volunteer Team

MDS Construction Standards and Problem-Solving A panel of MDS construction supervisors will address common problems areas and discuss solutions and best practices on the job site. Convener: Harold FriesenPanelists: Ivan Shirk, Region 1; Clete Yoder, Region 2; Jordan Miller, Region 3; Harold Miller, Region 4

Tools for Telling the MDS Story Media interviews, church presentations and even elevator rides give us opportunities to tell the MDS story. This workshop will help you craft articulate messages that tell the MDS story and convey the passion we all share for rebuilding and restoring lives. Facilitator: Jesse Huxman

Case Management by MDS MDS Canada is most often required to provide their own case management. This workshop will offer training on how to do unit-based case management in order to ensure a good match with MDS’s mission. Facilitator: Evelyn Peter-Rojas

SPEAKERS

Joel ShortRev. Joel Short is the pastor at Hopewell Mennonite Church in Kouts, Indiana where he has served for 10 years. He and his wife Karen have two children. Joel enjoys reading, hiking, astronomy, and travel with his family. In January 2017 Joel and several others from Hopewell served in MDS in Clearlake, California following wildfires in the area.

Emily Kirby Rev. Emily Kirby grew up in metro-Atlanta and is a Provisional Deacon in the North Georgia Annual Conference. Emily currently serves as the Volunteer Coordinator for the South Carolina Annual Conference Disaster Recovery Team. As a life-long United Methodist, Emily understands the love of God as grace abundant. In addition to ministry Emily loves spending time with her husband Adam Kirby and their precious,

precocious 13-month old son Judah. At the end of the day Emily’s goals are to love God, love people, and be in God’s beautiful natural creation as much as possible!

Cristina Cornejo Cristina is Program Manager for the Rebuild Texas Fund, a collaborative project of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and the OneStar Foundation established to support the rebuilding efforts in communities impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The Rebuild Texas Fund raised $100M, all of which is at work on the ground in affected Texas communities. Cristina has worked directly with grantees to assess and prioritize critical community needs in order to obtain private

philanthropic funds. Cristina and the Rebuild Texas Fund team will be working alongside these communities through 2020 to complete all 290 funded projects.

Gabe and Rachel WarrinerGabe and Rachel have a long-term approach to flood recovery. Their passion is to see Grand Forks, British Columbia not only return to its preflood living condition, but that it would be even better. They both continue to work with incredible organizations like Samaritans Purse and Mennonite Disaster Service to ensure that

Grand Forks recovers fully and completely. They are also working alongside other churches and organizations that desire to see Grand Forks fully restored. In life, they are passionate about their family and value spending time with their kids and hope that grandkids are in the near future. They love to travel locally and internationally and are expectant about the good things God has in store for them.

Brenda D. Phillips Brenda D. Phillips is the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Indiana University South Bend. She is the author of Mennonite Disaster Service, a book about Hurricane Katrina and the therapeutic healing effects of volunteer work. Her new book, Disaster Volunteers, will be out in 2020. She is a graduate of Bluffton College and The Ohio State University. Her career has been spent studying and teaching about disaster

recovery and socially vulnerable populations. She has volunteered to help MDS with a variety of tasks from assessing their efforts to supporting the development of disaster courses and programs at Hesston College and Canadian Mennonite University. She has also taught courses on humanitarian leadership at Eastern Mennonite University and is a graduate of the EMU STAR program. Brenda and her family moved to South Bend, Indiana in 2018.

Hubert E. YatesRev. Hubert Yates is currently completing his second three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (MSVOAD) organization representing the Mississippi Baptist Convention Disaster Relief (MBDR) efforts where he serves as a member of the Overhead/Management Team. He is serving his second consecutive term as Board President for MSVOAD. Prior to representing Mississippi

Baptist Disaster Relief with MSVOAD, Hubert served with Winston STRONG, a Community Based Recovery Committee serving Winston County, Mississippi, as Volunteer Operations Manager in recovery efforts following the April 2014 eF4 tornado resulting in 35 complete rebuilds and over 115 major repair projects through the efforts of volunteer organizations including Mennonite Disaster Service. Prior to entering the volunteer disaster relief area, Hubert served for 28 years in the Fire/EMS/EMA arena in both career and volunteer positions. Hubert is a believer in Christ and has served the past 26 years as a bivocational pastor for Baptist congregations in East Mississippi. He is married to Tracey P. Yates (36 years) and has two adult children.

MISSION STATEMENT

Mennonite Disaster Service is a volunteer network of Anabaptist

Churches that responds in Christian love to those affected by

disasters in Canada and the United States. While the main focus

is on cleanup, repair and rebuilding homes, this service touches

lives and nurtures hope, faith and wholeness.
