Skåne’s food cluster has its roots in Agriculture, Food and

Ingredients coupled with Biotech, Processing Technology,

Packaging, Transport and Logistics. The synergies in the clus-

ter are created by the close interaction between the indus-

trial and science bases.

The industrial base

The Skåne region accounts for a third of Swedish agricultural

production. Forty-five percent of the turnover of the Swedish

food industry, including packaging and equipment, is related

to companies in Skåne.

Here you will find production units for big international

food corporations such as Campbell Soup, Findus and Unilever

Best Foods, along with Swedish and Nordic companies such as

Arla Foods, Procordia, Cerealia and Skåne Dairy.

The food ingredient area is well represented by Danisco

Cultor, Karlshamns AB and Lyckeby Culinar, for example. On

the packaging and processing side Skåne is home to world-class

companies such as AlfaLaval, TetraPak, Rexam and ABB.

The science base

Scandinavia’s largest unit for academic research, Lund Univer-

sity and SLU (the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences),

is located in Skåne. The region houses half of Sweden’s total

R&D resources within the food area and forty percent of the

Swedish biotech and crop science industry. As a part of the

Öresund region (Medicon Valley), Skåne is ranked as one of

Europe’s leading Biotech areas.

Successful synergies

As a result of the close interaction between the industry and

academia, the Swedish government recently invested in an SEK

100m programme to support Skåne’s continued development

as a food and health cluster (Innovations at the interfaces).

“The food cluster in Skåne has emerged as one of the most innovative in Europe. Together with the Öresund region of Denmark, Skåne forms Europe’s most comprehensive food cluster, and the two regions also form one of the largest life sciences and biotech clusters in Europe, known as the Medicon Valley.”

IHN, Ingredients, Health and Nutrition, Feb 2004

The proximity of so many different industries and academic

disciplines within Skåne makes it possible to innovate through-

out the value chain, finding the right solutions from medical

research to a successful commercial product. The innovations

are often found at the interfaces between science, food and

consumers. This is just a brief list of examples.

PrimaLiv – a yoghurt with oat muesli that leverages the health properties of Oat Beta Glucans. ProViva – the world’s first probiotic fruit drink, developed in a cooperation between the biotech company Probi and Skåne Dairy. Oatly – oat drink and oat milk products, developed and commercialised by the research company Ceba Foods.AXA Magiform – by Cerealia and BioDoc; a patented process creates cereals with therapeutic properties for consumers with gastro-intestinal problems.Life Top™ Straw – a delivery system for probiotics for ambient consumer products, developed by the biotech company BioGaia and TetraPak.Life Top™ Cap – BioGaia has developed a screw cap, Life Top Cap, featuring a protective blister that allows protected storage of probiotic cultures, sensitive ingredients, etc., which are then released upon consumption of the beverage. Bioett TBB Chilled – a time and temperature monitoring system for food products in the chill chain, developed by Bioett and Lund University. Ecolean – an environmentally friendly packaging material based on calcium carbonate, also known as chalk, with plastic as the binding agent. Developed and marketed by the company with the same name.Tetra Recart – TetraPak has developed the world’s first retortable carton, is a new paperboard laminate material designed for food products traditionally packed in cans.

The first real functional foods market in Europe

Sweden was the first country in Europe to introduce specific

regulations on how health claims may be used in functional

food marketing. The country’s regulatory system for functional

foods works in cooperation with the food industry, the govern-

ment and retail and consumer organisations.

The key stakeholders in the dynamic Swedish functional

foods development, such as Lund University’s Functional Foods

Science Center and the Swedish Nutritional Foundation, to-

gether with research-based companies and university spin-offs,

are all found in or around Ideon Science Park.

“ The functional foods business is a new Scandinavian area of cooperation that blends biotechnology with the traditional food industry, and it has grown up from a great collaborative spirit involving government, industry and academia. The key players in the functional foods industry are based in Skåne, a province known as the breadbasket of Sweden.” From the US-based newsletter ScienceNextWave, May 2003

Bioett

A The Bioett system has the potential to mini- mise the well-known problem of food poisoning due to excessive temperature abuse in the supply chain.C The system was developed in close collabora- tion with Lund University’s Dept. of Biotech- nology and Ideon Agro Food.E Private entrepreneurs, with international experience from the packaging and food business, started Bioett, which was later financed by Industrifonden, Malmöhus Invest and TeknoSeed.F Partnerships were established with specialist companies in the areas of RF circuits and electronics, both in Sweden and abroad.G Bioett handles both marketing and production.H The Bioett system is business-to-business, with the potential to be used on consumer packages in the long term.
