Welcome to the Neighborhood!

Summer has just begun, and the weather has become quite warm and exceptionally Hot in Cleveland, yet we here at CBS Studio Center are already into fall… the fall television season that is! We are happy to welcome our returning shows back into the fold and are excited to greet those new to the lot, who are certain to provide us all with some Entertainment Tonight and every night!

So here’s the scoop I got from hanging out at the local Parks and Recreation areas in town.

The Millers just moved into the neighborhood and have become fast friends with Melissa & Joey, who have been Playing House for quite some time now. Also new to region is Kirstie, who recently contacted the Brooklyn Nine Nine to help locate her Baby Daddy. The Talk is that he is a bit Twisted, and may be hiding out with his Big Brother, a Bad Teacher who was recently fi red after all his students failed their fi nal exams. Also new to the neighborhood is The Republic Building. That large yellow house at the intersection of My Three Sons Street and Gunsmoke Avenue has been remodeled and transformed into just over 6500 square feet of production offi ce space! How did the building get its name, you ask? Well, let us delve into the rich history of CBS Studio Center and it will become clear.

Mack Sennett, aka The King of Comedy, built this studio back in 1928 where he successfully produced two-reeler comedies, with the likes of Charlie Chaplin and W.C. Fields, and later several singing short subject fi lms with an unknown actor named Bing Crosby, until the Great Depression forced him into bankruptcy in 1933. For the next two years the studio was known as Mascot Pictures, and the main product was the Saturday matinee serial thriller (which is best recollected by picturing that unfortunate heroine tied to the railroad tracks as a train hurtles toward her and “continued next week” appears on the screen).

In 1935 Mascot Pictures, Consolidated Film Industries and Monogram Pictures joined forces with a bunch of independent producers and they took over the studio, forming Republic Pictures. The studio quickly became a major force in the industry, with membership in the Motion Picture Association of America. Republic was known for its fi rst class production facilities, effi cient use of stock footage, superior editing equipment and possibly

the largest scoring stage at that time. The studio produced over fi fty fi lms per year, starring such huge talent as John Wayne, Joan Crawford, Gene Autry, and that well known couple Roy Rogers and Dale Evans (whose namesakes we have already honored with the R & D Building).

In the 1950’s Republic grew with the times and ventured into television production, successfully producing specials and series until 1963 when CBS Television Network became the major lessee of the studio and later purchased the lot.

So as Republic was such a big part of the studio’s history, it seems only right to remember its contribution with a lasting tribute! The fi rst occupants to set up shop there will be TV Land, Brooklyn Nine Nine, and ET.
