The design and maintenance of the Pacuare Lodge have at their very core our commitment to minimal environmental impact, social responsibility and maximum education and enjoyment!.

Your stay at the Pacuare Lodge directly contributes to protecting the fragile rainforest environment, as well as enriching the lives of the area`s local inhabitants. Part of the funds collected through our lodge are used to purchase and protect additional tracks of primary rainforest. The Project began in 1993 with an original purchase of 12 hectares (29.6 acres), and by 2008 we have managed to acquire and protect 340 hectares (836 acres) with the sole purpose to preserve the primary forest, the water sources, and the rich biodiversity found within.

Also the lodge, support three local primary schools, maintain roads and provide employment opportunities to local residents, including the people from the small town of Bajo del Tigre and the native Cabecar population.

The respect for the local people idiosyncrasy, their culture and traditions is part of our commit-ment, and we have encouraged the creation of employee committees in Communitarian Development, Rescue of Cabecar Culture, Recycling and training.

Pacuare Lodge has well-defined Sustainability policy for those who are interested in knowing it more widely.

Please remember that we want to keep everything at the lodge as in touch with nature as we possibly can, so do not be surprised to find a few insects here or there. Although we try to keep their populations under control as much as possible, they are an integral part of the forest ecosystem. The best way to protect yourself is to keep your bungalow door and screens shut (bugs are attracted to light) and use insect repellant if needed.

Su estadía en nuestro Lodge contribuye directamente no solamente a la protección del bosque tropical lluvioso pero también al enriquecimiento del nivel de vida de los habitantes de la zona. Parte de los fondos que se obtienen en el Pacuare Lodge son utilizados para adquirir tierras y proteger el bosque lluvioso de la Zona Protegida del Pacuare.

Iniciamos el proyecto con 12 hectáreas en el año 1993 y a la fecha hemos logrado adquirir y proteger 340 hectáreas de bosque.

Igualmente el Lodge apoya tres escuelas locales, colabora en el mantenimiento de caminos veci-nales y es el mayor empleador de mano de obra en el sector Turismo de la zona, que incluye al poblado del Bajo del Tigre, Santa Marta y la reserva indígena Cabecar Nairi Awari.

El respeto por la idiosincrasia de los pobladores, sus culturas y tradiciones es parte de nuestro compromiso y en este sentido hemos impulsado la creación de comités de colaboradores del lodge en áreas de Desarrollo Comunitario, Rescate de la Cultura Cabecar, Manejo de Desechos y Capacitación.

El Pacuare Lodge cuenta con una política definida de sostenibilidad la cual está accesible para todo aquel que desee conocerla más ampliamente.

Por favor recuerde que deseamos mantener todo el entorno lo más amigablemente posible con la naturaleza por lo que le pedimos que no se sorprenda si encuentra algunos insectos aquí y allá. A pesar de que tratamos de mantenerlos alejados de las instalaciones, debemos entender que este es su medio ambiente natural por lo que le recomendamos mantener cerrada la puerta de su habitación (los insectos son atraídos por la luz) y usar repelente de insectos en caso de necesidad.

Safety Recommendations

Safety is our primary concern, and we spare no effort to provide the highest quality, most enjoyable experience possible. Our guides are trained to assist you in case of emergency.

For your own safety, please follow these recommendations:

• Wear Shoes when walking outside We do our best to keep the grounds around the lodge clean and orderly, as well as cobbled paths. Although there’s little risk of being bitten by anything more dangerous than a mosquito, we recommend that you always wear shoes (sneakers or hiking boots) when walking outside.

• Don´t go Hiking in the Forest Alone We do not recommend our visitors hiking into the forest alone. Please let your guide know if you want to go hiking in the forest and someone will accompany you. Stay on the path and be careful when you cross the streams because the wet rocks can be very slippery. The hanging gondola that carries you above the river can only be operated by our staff.

• Keep the door of your bungalow shut Maintain your bungalow door shut at all the times to avoid insects and other critters of the rainforest out-side. Remember to close the door each time you leave.

• Don´t forget to blow the candles out Please remember to extinguish the candles in your bungalow when leaving, or before going to sleep so that they do not become a fire hazard. Pay special attention to extinguishing your candle before lowering the mosquito net. We provide flashlights to each bungalow for your convenience.

• Locate the fire extinguisher in your Bungalow Please locate the fire extinguisher in your bungalow and read its instructions. In the unlikely event of a fire, the mosquito net and the palm-thatched roof of your bungalow would burn very quickly.

• In- Room Safety deposit box In order to provide you with safety for your own goods, we recommend you to store your valuables in your digital safety box. Pacuare Lodge will not be responsible for objects or valuables that have not been placed in the respective safety box.

• Follow the emergency route from your bungalow or suite Please locate yourself in the Pacuare Lodge map and follow the emergency route to the meeting point of the lodge in case of emergency. Each suite has its own map, and you can also find them in the main office and meeting point.

Recomendaciones de Seguridad

La seguridad es vital en nuestra actividad y nos esforzamos en proveer la más alta calidad y experiencia posible. Nuestros guías están capacitados para brindarle la atención primaria en caso de necesidad.

Por su propia seguridad, por favor siga las siguientes recomendaciones:

• Use calzado cuando camine en las afueras de su bungalowTratamos lo más posible de mantener las zonas de jardín limpias y ordenadas lo mismo que los senderos de piedra, sin embargo existe siempre el riesgo de ser picado por algo más que un mosquito, por lo que recomendamos usar calzado cuando camine fuera de su bungalow .

• No vaya a caminar solo en el bosqueNo le recomendamos que vaya a caminar solo en el bosque, informe a su guía sobre su interés de realizar una caminata y alguien de nuestro personal le acompañará. Manténgase siempre en los senderos y tenga cuidado cuando cruza riachuelos pues las piedras mojadas tienden a ser resbalosas.

• Mantenga la puerta de su bungalow cerradaMantener la puerta de su bungalow cerrada evitará que insectos u otras criaturas del bosque ingresen a su habitación. Recuerde cerrar la puerta cada vez que sale. No se olvide de apagar las candelas o velas.

Por favor, recuerde apagar las velas en su bungalow, especialmente si se ausenta de la habitación. En caso de que haya bajado el mosquitero, asegúrese de apagar cualquier vela que esté próxima a la cama.

Durante la cena nuestro personal encenderá las velas de su bungalow para facilitar su regreso a la habitación en la noche.

• Ubique los Extintores de Fuego en su BungalowPor favor, ubique el extintor de fuego en su bungalow y familiarícese con las instrucciones de uso del mismo. En el desafortunado evento de un incendio, considere que el mosquitero y el techo de paja de su bungalow se quemaran rápidamente.

• Caja de Seguridad en los bungalowsA fin de proveerle seguridad para sus bienes le recomendamos el uso de la caja de seguridad digital que tiene a su disposición. El Pacuare Lodge no se hace responsable por objetos que no han sido colocados en la respectiva caja de seguridad.

• En caso de emergencia siga la ruta indicada en el mapa Por favor ubique su bungalow en el mapa y en caso de emergencia camine hacia la ruta de emergencia hasta llegar al punto de encuentro. Cada bungalow tiene un mapa y también puede encontrarlo en la recepción.

• Is it safe to drink water directly from the faucet? Yes. Our tap water comes directly from an uncontaminated spring originated in the mountains high above the lodge, which is protected from the same place it springs up. Additionally, we use UV purification system to guarantee the maximum water quality.

Pacuare Lodge contributes to reduce the amount of disposable water bottles by using only refillablebottles. If you forgot to bring your bottle you may purchase a stainless steel one at the lodge. We do not sell bottled water at the lodge.

• Is there electricity at the Pacuare Lodge? The Pacuare Lodge’s philosophy of simplistic luxury and oneness with nature is enhanced by the romance of operating our bungalows without electricity. Our energy is generated by a hydroelectric micro-central turbine using a local water source to provide electricity for our communication system, to light the pathways to the suites and for our kitchen appliances.

• Is smoking permitted? According with Costa Rica Anti-smoking Law No. 9028, smoking is not permitted at Pacuare Lodge.

• When is food served at Pacuare Lodge? All our meals are served at Nairi Awari Restaurant.

Breakfast is served at 8:00 am, and includes a healthy assortment of eggs, banana pancakes, French toasts, homemade granola , tropical fruit, yogurt, homemade bread, gallo pinto, Turrialba cheese, juice, coffee and tea.

Lunch is served at 1:00 pm and it is a three course meals that tends to be a pasta meal, a traditional Afro Caribbean dish, couscous with chicken, chicken stir fry or a variety of salads accompanied by soup, dessert, coffee & tea.

Before dinner you can have snacks and drinks in the second floor of Nairi Awari main lodge. A superior selection of wines may be purchased from our cellar with the evening meal. Additionally, our bar includes a nice variety of spirits and liquors that may be purchased separately. Alcoholic drinks and non- alcoholic mixed drinks are not included in your package.

Dinner is the main meal at our lodge at 7:00 pm. Here you will enjoy a candlelit three-course meal that features a soup or salad entry, a choice of prime cuts of beef or chicken/fish with vegetable side dish, dessert, coffee or tea. With advanced notice we can usually fulfill most special meal requests. So if you are a vegetarian or require a special meal, please advice our staff.

• Where can I charge my camera, mobile and Ipad batteries?You may charge batteries in one of the outlets located at our Reception area.

• Is internet service available at the lodge?Yes, we have free WIFI available at the reception area, however, due to our remoteness, the internet connection might go off line suddenly.

• Is there an accessible telephone? We have an IP communication system, if you need it, please consult with our manager. In addition every bungalow is equipped with a telephone for in house communication.

• Are insects and mosquitoes a problem? Although we are located deep in the jungle (too deep for the mosquitoes to even find us!!), we have had very few complaints about bugs from our guests. Our bungalows are well screened, nevertheless it is im-portant to keep your bungalow door closed at all times. We recommend a good dousing of insect repellant for outdoor activities.

• Why do you provide liquid soap? We provide soap and shampoo dispensers because it is more ecological –there´s less waste because guests use only what they need. Additionally, the soap and shampoo is biodegradable.

• Why do we provide one towel per guest? Guests are given only one towel for both ecological and logistical reasons. Using fewer towels reduces the wash load, which in turn reduces the amount of detergents we have to use.

The second reason is related to keeping our load light, since all towels and other supplies must be rafted in to the lodge. If you need extra towels, we will be happy to provide them upon request.

• Why we ask our guests to remove footware before entering your suite? We kindly ask that guests who have participated in tour activities please remove muddy footware before entering the suite. This helps us avoid using strong and excessive amounts of detergents and electricity to clean mud off white towels and bedding.

• What happens with the garbage? We work under the principles of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling; therefore we appreciate the use of the respective waste baskets located in different parts of the Lodge to deposit your garbage. If you use water bottles, we have a big container so you can refill them up when necessary, and after using them, please deposit them for recycling.

At the lodge, we use the organic waste for the bio -digester and separate recyclable materials which are rafted out for three hours & then transported to recycling companies

• Are tips included in the rate? Tips are not included in the rates. It is customary to tip bellboys, housekeepers, guides, cooks , spa and other members of our staff at your convenience. If you requiere recommendations about tipping please consult our Resident Manager.

• Is laundry service available in Pacuare Lodge?Pacuare Lodge offers laundry service at and additional charge. Guests wishing to make use of this service should place their items in the laundry bag located in your suite, complete the checklist and leave the bag in your room for housekeeping staff to collect. The laundry cloth bags “A Mano Tirrases” (Hand made Tirrases) were designed and hand made by women mostly heads of family living in Tirrases, one of the poorest areas in San Jose . If you would like to purchase a cloth bag and support this initiative please ask our guest relation staff.

• How do things arrive at the Pacuare Lodge? Most supplies at the Pacuare Lodge, from the beds and furniture to the food and drinks, have been rafted in on the river. Much of the lodge´s allure and rustic charm is due to its remoteness and that it is not ac-cessible by road.

• ¿Es seguro beber agua del grifo? Sí, nuestra agua proviene directamente de una fuente que se origina en las montañas, la cual está pro-tegida desde el mismo lugar en que brota. Adicionalmente utilizamos un sistema de potabilización UV para garantizar la máxima calidad del agua. Como una medida para reducir el consumo de plásticos, no proveemos agua embotellada, sin embargo disponemos de botellas de ácero inoxidable para la venta.

• ¿Es permitido fumar? De acuerdo a la Ley Anti Tabacco No.9028 de Costa Rica no es permitido fumar en ningun area de Pacuare Lodge. Le solicitamos respetar esta ley para evitar sanciones al respecto.

• ¿Cuál es el horario del servicio de alimentación en Pacuare Lodge?Todas las comidas son serividas en el restaurante Nairi Awari.

Desayuno: se sirve a partir de las 8:00am e incluye una selección de huevos al gusto, pancakes de ba-nano, frutas tropicales, queso Turrialba, gallo pinto, jugo de naranja, pan hecho en casa, yogurt, granola hecha en casa, café y té. Almuerzo: Se sirve a la 1:00 pm y consiste de una comida de tres platos que incluye entrada, plato fuerte y postre que podría ser una pasta, Rice & Beans que es un plato tradicional Afrocaribeno, couscous con pollo grillado o una ensalada con lechugas variadas de la huerta acompanda de atun fresco o pollo grillado, postre, café y té.

A las 5:30pm puede visitar el segundo nivel del edificio principal Nairi Awari para disfrutar de bebidas y snack previo a la cena. Disponemos de una amplia selección de vinos los cuales puede comprar de nuestra cava para acompañar su cena. A su vez en nuestro bar encontrará una agradable variedad de licores para la venta. Las bebidas alcohólicas y cocktails sin alcohol no están incluidas y deben pagarse por separado.

Cena: es la comida principal y se sirve a las 7:00pm. Usted disfrutará de una cena de tres platos a la luz de las velas que ofrece una entrada de sopa o ensalada, de plato fuerte puede ser un corte de carne de primera calidad o un pescado o pollo acompañado de vegetales y un delicioso postre.

Con suficiente anticipación nuestra cocina podría preparar una solicitud especial. En caso de que usted sea vegetariano o requiera una dieta especial por favor infórmelo a nuestro personal.

• ¿Hay electricidad en el Pacuare Lodge?A inicios del 2008 se instaló una pequeña turbina para producir energía hidroeléctrica con el fin de proveer electricidad para los sistemas de comunicación, alumbrado de pasillos y cocina. Hemos encon-trado que el hecho de no tener electricidad es uno de los factores más atractivos del Pacuare Lodge, usted tendrá la oportunidad de experimentar nuevas sensaciones y ser parte del magnifico entorno natural.

• ¿Donde puedo cargar baterias de Ipads, celulares y camara? Es posible hacerlo en el area de recepcion donde disponemos de varios conectores para su uso.

• ¿Hay internet en el lodge?Si, disponemos de WIFI gratuito en el area de recepcion, sin embargo debido a lo remoto de nuestra ubicación podria suceder que la conexion se desconete repentinamente.

• ¿Hay teléfono accesible?Tenemos un sistema de comunicación IP, en caso de necesidad consulte con la recepción.

• ¿Cuál es el horario de Jawa Juu Spa?El Spa está abierto a partir de las 10:00 am y el último tratamiento se realiza a las 6:00 pm.

• ¿Cómo llegan las cosas al Pacuare Lodge?Casi todos los objetos en el Pacuare Lodge, desde las camas y muebles hasta la comida y bebidas han sido transportados en balsa por el río. Mucha de la belleza y encanto del Lodge es el hecho de su ubicación remota y difícil acceso.

• ¿Los mosquitos e insectos son un problema?A pesar de que estamos ubicados dentro del bosque lluvioso (bien remoto para que los mosquitos no nos encuentren!!) hemos tenido muy pocas quejas de molestia por este tema, sin embargo nuestros bungalows tienen cedazo mosquitero en sus ventanas, por lo que le recomendamos mantener cerrada la puerta.

Igualmente es recomendable el utilizar repelente de insectos para sus actividades al aire libre.

• ¿Por qué proveen jabón líquido?Utilizamos jabón líquido en dispensadores como parte de nuestro compromiso con el medio ambiente y la sostenibilidad. Evitamos de esta manera cualquier desperdicio y tanto jabón como shampoo son biodegra-dables.

• ¿Porqué proveen solo una toalla por huésped?Fundamentalmente por razones ecológicas. El menor uso de toallas implica directamente un menor uso de jabón en el lavado. Del mismo modo toda la línea de ropa blanca debe ser transportada del Lodge por el río; ingresar una vez lavada por esta misma vía y el espacio en las balsas es limitado. Si usted necesita toallas extras con todo gusto se las proveeremos.

• ¿Porqué solicitamos a nuestros huéspedes retirarse su calzado antes de ingresar a su bungalow? A nuestros huéspedes que han participado en actividades o tours en la reserva del Pacuare Lodge, les pedi-mos quitarse el calzado con lodo antes de entrar en los bungalows y limpiarse el barro con agua. Esto nos ayuda a evitar usar cantidades excesivas de jabón y energía eléctrica para limpiar de lodo paños o sábanas.

• ¿Qué pasa con la basura?Trabajamos el principio de Reducir, Reutilizar, Reciclar, por tanto agradecemos la utilización de los respec-tivos basureros ubicados en diferentes sitios del Lodge. Si utiliza botellas de agua, tenemos un contenedor grande para que las rellene cuando sea necesario y luego las disponga para su reciclaje. La basura orgánica se trata en sitio y el resto de los desechos se separa y se transporta en balsa hasta Siquirres en donde se pro-cesa de acuerdo a su origen. Le agradecemos su colaboración al respecto.

• ¿Hay servicio de lavandería?Si disponemos de este servicio a un costo adicional. Por favor coloque su ropa en la bolsa de lavandería ubicada en su habitación, llene la lista de lavado y deje la bolsa para ser retirada por nuestra camarera. Las bolsas de lavandería son confeccionadas a mano y diseñadas por mujeres jefes de hogar de la comunidad de Tirrases ubicada en San José bajo la marca “A Mano Tirrases”. Si desea comprar una bolsa de tela y apoyar esta iniciativa puede consultar a nuestro personal de recepción.

• ¿Las propinas estan incluidas en la tarifa?Las propinas no están incluidas en la tarifa. Se acostumbra dar propina al personal que transporta el equi-paje, mucamas, guias , cocineros , personal del spa y otros miembros de nuestro staff a su conveniencia. Si requiere recomendaciones acerca de este tema existe una guía que nuestro Gerente Residente podrá facilitarle.

The Pacuare Canopy Adventure Experience

This thrilling ride through a tropical rainforest canopy offers you the opportunity to explore the treetops from a totally unique perspective – from above! A short hike will take you to our first platform, where a series of transverse cables allows you to travel from treetop to treetop with professional gear in a safe and enjoyable way. Face the exotic beauty of the rain forest head on, feeling the thrill of dramatic views; and some of the exceptional characteristics of this tour are its difficult topography, the high mountains, the majestic Pacuare River and the beauty of the rainforest. The tour finishes near the main building, just close to your suite!

Duration: approximately 1 ½ - 2 hours Difficulty: easy to intermediate Minimum Age: 8 years old accompanied by a tour guide

El tour de aventura en el Canopy del PacuareEste excitante recorrido a través de las copas de los árboles del bosque tropical lluvioso le ofrece la oportunidad de explorar las partes altas de los árboles desde una perspectiva única y diferente, desde arriba! Una caminata de 20 minutos le llevará hasta la primera plataforma desde donde varios cables transversales le permitirán viajar de un árbol a otro deslizándose con equipo profesional de montañismo en una forma segura y divertida. La belleza escénica del bosque tropical lluvioso que rodea al Lodge es sencillamente espectacular. Las vistas que ofrece este tour son inigualables esto debido a lo quebrado de la topografía, las altas montañas, el majestuoso río Pacuare y la dramática belleza del bosque lluvioso. El tour termina a metros de la recepción y justo cerca de su suite!!

Tropical Canyoning Experience

The adventure includes a hike through the rainforest and exploration of El Tesorito Creek Canyon, where you’ll make several short rappels perfect for learning the technique before an exhilarating rappel down a 30-meter (90-foot) rock wall.

You’ll hike for about 15 minutes through the rainforest from the main lodge to a point where you begin your descent into the narrow canyon of El Tesorito Creek. The canyon exploration provides a great intro-duction to rappelling, since it includes five short rappels of between 2 and 20 meters (6-65 feet) that will prepare you for a final rappel of more than 30 meters (90 feet). After that, you’ll hike briefly through the creek and the forest back to the lodge.

Pacuare Tropical CanyoningEste tour le permite experimentar el deporte de cayoning, el cual combina escalada, caminata y rapel.La aventura incluye una caminata por la selva y una exploración de la quebrada en el Cañón El Tesorito, donde tendrá la oportunidad de realizar algunos pequeños descensos, perfectos para aprender la técnica y generar confianza antes de comenzar un estimulante descenso vertical por una pared de piedra de 30 metros.

Desde la recepción se emprende una caminata de 15 minutos a través del bosque lluvioso, hasta el pun-to donde inicia el descenso en el angosto cañón El Tesorito. La exploración del cañón permite una fácil introducción al rapel, debido a que incluye 5 descensos entre 2 y 20 metros que lo prepararan para el gran descenso final de 30 metros. Seguidamente una caminata a través de la quebrada y el bosque para regresar al Lodge.

Cabecar Indigenous Hike

The Talamanca Mountains are host to the Cabecar natives, the largest indigenous group in Costa Rica, and one that retains many of its traditional customs and beliefs.

The experience to walk to these family clans is a challenge due to the difficult conditions of the trails; nevertheless, the trail offers a wonderful opportunity to discover many secrets of the forest, interact with the ecosystem, and hike the same trails the Cabecar´s have for centuries. After visiting with a Cabecar family, we will begin our trek back down to the lodge.

Tour de Caminata a los Indígenas CabécaresLa zona Protegida de Pacuare es anfitriona de la cultura Cabecar que es el grupo indígena más grande de Costa Rica y que se encuentra disperso en ciertas partes de la cordillera de Talamanca. Viven en grupos familiares llamados clanes, sus casas son tradicionales de su arquitectura, cultura y costumbres. Tienen su propia lengua aunque algunos también hablan español. La experiencia de caminar hasta este clan familiar es todo un reto por lo empinado del terreno y las condiciones del sendero que son difíciles, sin embargo el trayecto ofrece una oportunidad maravillosa de descubrir muchos secretos del bosque, interactuar con el ecosistema, caminar por senderos que han sido utilizados por esta cultura por cientos de años y vivir la experiencia de ver cómo vive este grupo indígena de Costa Rica.

Bajo del Tigre & Nairi Awari Reserve Hike

On this walk, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the two communities closest to the Pacuare Lodge: Bajo del Tigre, a typical rural Costa Rican village where many of the Lodge’s staff live, and a small Cabécar Indian community inside the 25,000-hectare Nairi Awari Indigenous Reserve. This adventure starts at the lodge and continues into the jungle, climbing up to a tiny indigenous community with primary school, which you’ll be able to visit. We’ll then descend to cross the Pacuare River, via a a rustic gondola suspen-ded from a steel cable used by the Cabécar and hike past patches of secondary forest, streams, crops and homes in the small village of Bajo del Tigre. You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch here before heading back into the rainforest on a trail that winds its way down to the Pacuare Lodge. We’ll then cross the Pacuare River again, via a cable and arrive at the lodge.

Caminata a Bajo del Tigre y la Reserva Nairi Awari En esta caminata tendrá la oportunidad de visitar las dos comunidades más importantes y que son aleda-ñas al Pacuare Lodge. El Bajo del Tigre, un pequeño caserío en donde vive un gran número de staff del Lodge y la reserva indígena Nairi Awari, compuesta por 25 mil hectáreas de bosque tropical lluvioso en donde en pequeños parches en medio de la selva, se encuentran pequeños caseríos indígenas, uno de los cuales alberga la escuela primaria Cabecar, la cual tendremos la oportunidad de conocer. Esta caminata se inicia en el Lodge y ascenderemos por uno de los senderos que nos lleva hasta el caserío indígena. Continuamos descendiendo por el bosque hasta llegar a la margen alta del río Pacuare el cual cruzare-mos por medio de un cable de acero con una góndola que es utilizado por los indígenas Cabecar. Bosque secundario, riachuelos, cultivos de culantro silvestre y el pequeño caserío del Bajo del Tigre con su vida campesina, serán los atractivos de esta segunda parte del recorrido. En este lugar tendremos el almuerzo, podremos ver la forma de vida de esta pequeña aldea y luego continuaremos el sendero en medio de la selva que caminan día a día la mayoría de los miembros de nuestro Staff. Cruzaremos nuevamente el río en un cable de acero y góndola para llegar a Pacuare Lodge..

Ancient Trails & Hidden Waterfall Hike

This is the most challenging of our hikes, making it a good option for people who enjoy hiking into remote and wild areas. Departing from the Pacuare Lodge, it begins with a steep hike through the jungle to reach the legendary sendero de las mulas (mule trial), which is one of the main routes used by the Cabécar Indians to travel longer distances and has been used for generations. After the first climb, we’ll take the jabas trail, which includes a series of switchbacks, to the ‘path of puma.’ This will take us to the ancient mule trail, which we’ll follow deep into the Nairi Awari Indigenous Reserve to reach the highpoint of this excursion: the hidden waterfall. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at this scenic spot before hiking back along the trail to a Cabécar indigenous community. After exploring that traditional village, we’ll continue down another rainforest trial back to the Pacuare Lodge.

Caminata :Ancient Trails & Hidden Waterfall Esta experiencia es un excelente reto para los amantes de caminar en sitios remotos. La salida es desde el Pacuare Lodge y se inicia con un fuerte ascenso en busca del legendario sendero de las mulas, que es una de las principales rutas de caminata de los cabécares y que recorre las más largas distancias de la zona y por las que por siglos ha servido de ruta para generaciones de indígenas. Luego del primer ascenso, se continua en el sendero de las jabas que son una serie de columpios para conectar con el sendero del puma y de ahí llegar al sendero de las mulas en donde continuaremos adentrándonos en la reserva indí-gena en busca del premio del día, las cataratas perdidas. En este lugar tomaremos el almuerzo y después de un tiempo de gozar de este lugar emprenderemos el regreso por senderos que nos llevarán por una aldea indígena y luego al Pacuare Lodge.

Cabécar Indian Rancho and Rainforest Hike

Since time immemorial, the Cabécar Indians – Costa Rica’s largest tribe – have lived in harmony with the rainforest in the mountains near the Pacuare River. These indigenous people traditionally live in small family groups scattered across the jungle, which has helped them to maintain their customs, language and culture. At the Pacuare Lodge, we offer an opportunity to experience their way of life in relative comfort and without invading their privacy. We helped members of a clan that lives in the nearby Nairi Awari Indigenous Reserve to build a typical Cabécar Rancho (thatched house) a short hike from the lodge, where the son of a local shaman provides visitors with an introduction to his people’s culture and customs. There are two options for visiting the Cabécar Rancho. You can start with a moderate, 30 -minute hike through the rainforest, which allows you to see some of the flora and fauna that these indigenous people have long relied on. Or you can take a more direct route, which entails a short walk from the Lodge. Breakfast or Lunch will be served at the Rancho, where you will have the opportunity to learn about this ancient culture.

Rancho Cabecar y caminata por el bosque lluviosoDesde tiempos inmemorables, los Cabecares han habitado en las selvas tropicales de la zona del Pacuare. Inmersos en lo profundo de la selva, este grupo indígena vive en pequeños grupos familiares manteniendo sus costumbres, idioma y cultura. En Pacuare Lodge, queremos compartir la experiencia de conocer la forma de vida y cultura del mayor grupo indígena de Costa Rica y para lograr un cómodo acercamiento a la cultura, sin invadir su privacidad, se ha construido por parte del clan de la reserva Nairi Awari, un modelo de Rancho indígena, en donde se podrá compartir con uno de los hijos de quien fuera el Shaman, y aprender sobre su cultura y costumbres. La experiencia cabecar, nos permite acercarnos a sus costumbres y forma de vida sin invadir su privacidad en un ambiente único. Para llegar al Rancho Cabecar, tiene la opción de participar en una caminata guiada por el bosque tropical lluvioso, que le permitirá disfrutar de la naturaleza y caminar por los senderos que por décadas estos habitantes autóctonos han llevado a cabo en la zona del Pacuare. Rural Experience

Close to the Pacuare Lodge, on the far bank of the river, there is a small village called Bajo del Tigre; most of our employees come from there. Guided by a naturalist guide , explore the river region and rain forest, and visit the community of Bajo del Tigre, a small hamlet of farmers dedicated to the harvesting of species, roots, and tubercles , among others. You`ll visit the home of a local family and try a typical Costa Rican snack, such as “picadillo”, while seeing how they live. You will then visit the community`s one-room schoolhouse (during weekdays) where one energetic teacher teaches all grades.

La caminata se inicia desde el Lodge, para luego cruzar el andarivel sobre el río Pacuare y continuar ascendiendo por el sendero que atraviesa una zona de bosque secundario, que nos llevará luego al inicio de las pequeñas parcelas de culantro coyote, yuca, platanos, entre otros y de ahí al centro comunal, la plaza de futbol y un poco más allá la escuela, donde si es día lectivo podremos conocer y compartir con los niños de esta pequeña comunidad. Visitaremos la casa de una familia para conocer su estilo de vida y disfrutar de un snack tìpico preparado por ellos. El regreso se hace por el mismo sendero o bien se puede tomar el camino rural que igualmente lleva al punto del andarivel.

Birdwatching at Dawn Experience

As sun rays invade with their light the last hours of darkness, it begins a life concert, where bird songs prevail harmonizing with the sound of the river. Life in the rainforest becomes active, especially for birds, which offer a wonderful opportunity to know, along with a specialized guide, an important diversity of species of birds, some of which vary according to the season. This tour is a delight for nature lovers. The area around the lodge is home to over 150 species of birds.

Pacuare River Inflatable Duckies Experience

The Pacuare Lodge’s newest outdoor adventure lets you paddle down a relatively calm stretch of the Pacuare River in an inflatable kayak. You’ll enjoy gorgeous riparian scenery, spot some of the local birdlife, and paddle through class-II rapids.

After breakfast, we cross the river in a cable basket and board a 4x4 vehicle for the drive to the Pacuare River put in. An experienced river guide will teach you how to paddle duckies and provid detailed safety information, ensuring that you are comfortable and capable of maneuvering the kayak before you begin paddling downriver. You’ll then begin a nine-mile trip down that scenic waterway at a leisurely pace that allows you to admire the surrounding nature and paddle through small, but exhilarating rapids. *We operate this trip only under low water conditions.

Jaguar Room

Since 2009, Pacuare Lodge has supported research under the Jaguar Program of The National University of Costa Rica. Research in the Pacuare Reserve, the Nairí Awari Indigenous Reserve and Barbilla National Park has provided important discoveries & data about this endangered feline. At our Jaguar Hall located in our main building we share information about where they live, their reproduction cycle, eating habits and why the Pacuare River protected area is so important for their survival.We welcome our guests to be-come part of the Jaguar Project with their donations to ensure the future of this important specie. La Sala Jaguar está ubicada en nuestro edificio principal y allí compartimos valiosa información acerca de los resultados obtenidos en estos años de investigación así como datos tales como su ciclo de reproducción, hábitos alimenticios, y porque la zona Protectora del Río Pacuare es tan importante para la supervivencia del jaguar. The Pacuare Lodge’s kitchen staff is made up of young people from nearby communities. There is no head chef; we’ve simply developed the talent of local people and taught them the secrets of great food. We like to surprise our guests with combinations of flavors, local ingredients, innovative recipes and presentations. While not fancy, the simple fare is delicious enough to warrant opening a bottle of good wine, which is why we keep our cellar well stocked with vintages from around the world.

Just as the birds that abound at Pacuare Lodge make their nests high in the trees, we’ve built our own nest: a platform 20 meters (60 feet) high in a treetop, where guests can enjoy a meal in a uniquely splendid setting. The culinary adventure begins as you glide down a 130-meter cable to the platform high in the branches of a Ceiba: a tree that was sacred to the ancient Mayans. The details are yours for the choosing – the menu, the wine – but the setting is incomparable and the experience is guaranteed to remain etched in your memory forever.

From the Farm to your Table

A memorable meal begins with the selection of the best, freshest ingredients. At the Pacuare Lodge, you’ll enjoy delicious, fresh food that is organic and locally grown. We produce much of the fruit, vegetables and tubers served at the lodge’s restaurant on our own organic farm, Las Nubes de Tuis, in the mountains above the Pacuare River. There, we grow organic produce for the Pacuare Lodge’s kitchen with care and enthusiasm, because we know that our guests will appreciate the quality. We’ve also taught local farmers organic farming methods, so that they can supplement our farm’s production. To expand our culinary se-lection, we’ve started making organic goat cheese, which is used in various dishes, as well as the traditio-nal Turrialba cheese that we serve with breakfast and other meals. It’s all part of our attention to detail and our commitment to supporting local communities, protecting the environment, and ensuring that every guest has a natural, healthy and enjoyable stay.

De la Huerta a la Mesa

La buena cocina empieza con la selección de los mejores y más frescos ingredientes. Pacuare Lodge pro-duce gran parte de los vegetales, frutas, raíces y tubérculos que servimos en nuestro restaurante los cuales son cultivados en nuestra propia finca orgánica , Las Nubes de Tuis , ubicada en las montañas que rodean el río Pacuare. Allí cultivamos con esmero y pasión lo que sabemos será apreciado por nuestros huéspe-des. Hemos invertido también en capacitar a los campesinos locales en métodos de cultivo orgánico para apoyar la producción. Sin embargo, ese deseo de mejorar nuestra oferta gastronómica, nos ha llevado a producir un delicado queso orgánico de cabra que podrá degustar en diversos platos, así como el tradi-cional y sabroso queso Turrialba que servimos en desayunos y otros platos del menú.

Commintment to Sustainable Tourism

At the Pacuare Lodge, we are dedicated to sustainable tourism and have adopted an array of best practices. We go to great lengths to limit the negative environmental impacts of our operations while supporting con-servation and providing benefits for nearby communities. This policy isn’t limited to the Lodge – it extends through our entire company, from the main office to the warehouses where we store our rafts.

The following are some of the steps we’ve taken, or are taking to improve our relationship with the en-vironment:

• The Costa Rican Tourism Institute awarded the Pacuare Lodge it’s highest rating – level five – in its Cer-tification for Sustainable Tourism. The CST’s fundamental purpose is to make sustainability a practical and necessary reality within the con-text of the country’s competitiveness in tourism, while looking to improve the way that natural and social resources are used, encourage the active participation of local communities and provide a new source of competitiveness within the business sector.

• Pacuare Lodge was built with a minimum impact on the surrounding forest and river. No trees were cut to make room for the bungalows and main lodge, which were built with lumber from a reforestation project run by small farmers.

• Over the years, we’ve purchased 340 hectares (836 acres) of primary rainforest along the Pacuare River for conservation and in order to offset the atmospheric carbon created by our vehicles. In 2008 alone, we invested half a million dollars in buying land for conservation. Some of that forest was in danger of being cleared, but is now strictly protected in order to conserve its flora and fauna. • The lodge and bungalows operate without electricity and are illuminated with candles. What little elec-tricity we use at the lodge is clean energy generated by a a hydroelectric micro-central turbine and the source of energy comes from a creek located in the upper part of the lodge. Two micro turbines that use 4,2 litres of water per second have been set up and connected to a transformer that sends electricity to a bank of batteries which store energy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This supplies the energy needs of the lodge including communication, kitchen, refrigeration, office, and lighting of the trails, among others. This clean energy system with a low environmental impact will meet the lodge’s projected needs for the next 20 years, rendering the operation even more sustainable.

• Pacuare Lodge has set out to increase its sustainability and benefits to the local community by partne-ring with a small farm to grow organic fruit and vegetables.The farm is located in the little town of Nubes de Tuis, an hour drive away from Pacuare Lodge, in an agricultural area rich in volcanic soils at a perfect altitude for vegetable farming. Today, the orchard produces a wide diversity and sufficient amount of ve-getables, fruits, roots and tubers sustainably that can be used daily as fresh ingredients in the preparation of Pacuare’s meals. Additionally to the vegetable garden, we have a goat project to produce high quality cheese, and a coffee plantation has been also established with coffee wet mill for Pacuare Lodge´s use.

• The Pacuare Lodge Private Reserve captures more than 21,000 tons of carbon dioxide that threatens our global climate.

• The lodge’s bathrooms are equipped with biodegradable soap and shampoo and the water for their showers is heated with a gas system . All the lodge’s wastewater flows into state-of-the-art septic systems to avoid pollution of the nearby river.

• Aventuras Naturales & Pacuare Lodge spearheaded the Ecological Blue Flag Program for the Pacuare River in conjunction with local communities and the Costa Rica’s water institute AyA. On March 2009 the Pacuare River became the first river in Costa Rica to be awarded with a Blue Flag in recognition of its clean environment, making it a pioneer project.

• We are founding members of the Barbilla Biological Corridor Subcommittee and active supporters of this initiative. The aim of this Biological Corridor is to conserve enough habitat between the Central Vol-canic Mountain Range and Barbilla National Park to allow wildlife such as jaguars to move between those two conservation areas of Costa Rica.

• With the help of our guests, we´ve reforested former pastures in the Pacuare River watershed with native tree species to offset our carbon emissions and to improve the area’s environmental health. As those trees grow, they will absorb tons of atmospheric carbon while providing habitat for an array of wildlife.

• Pacuare Lodge/ Aventuras Naturales together with the National University’s Wildlife Management Pro-gram is spearheading since 2009 a study to determine the jaguar population that resides within the Pacua-re Protected Zone. We encourage you to visit the Jaguar Room, learn about the Project and check some of the images captured by the digital cameras placed on game trails. • We have a program for reintroducing howler monkeys, which were wiped out in the area by indigenous hunters years ago. We have successfully rescued the first troop of 8 monkeys from an endangered patch of forest in our region and re introduced them into our forest reserve.

• We have a rigorous recycling program that extends from the main office to the lodge. Our office staff is dedicated to the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. At the lodge, we use the organic waste for the bio -digester and separate recyclable materials for transport to recycling companies. For lunches served on our Pacuare River trips, we have reusable plates, cups and cutlery rather than the disposable plates and cups used by other rafting companies.

• On September 2010 we initiated a program committed to the construction of recycling centers for local schools. The first unit was built at Santa Marta Primary School. Our goal will involve all different schools located close to the lodge. This action is part of the educational program that we host at nearby commu-nities.

• The Long Run is a not-for-profit organization driving global sustainability through nature-based tourism business members. It is built around membership and supporters, its 4C framework and the Global Ecos-phere Retreats® (GER) standard that has been called “the world’s best standards for privately protected areas” (Dr. Jeff A. Langholz). The Long Run guides, connects and supports its members to achieve and ex-ceed the highest standards of sustainability through a holistic balance of 4Cs– Conservation, Community, Culture, Commerce. Pacuare Lodge is an active member of The Long Run since 2012 and is in its final process to obtain the GER standard.

The following are some of the steps we’ve taken, or are taking to improve our relationship with local communities:

• 100% of Pacuare Lodge staff comes from nearby communities of Bajos del Tigre ,Nairi Awari Indigenous Reserve (This figure does not include the approximately 18 river guides who live in Turrialba, 34 kms away from the lodge). According to a demographic study, we can say that tourism represents an 18% of the jobs at Bajos del Tigre community and Pacuare Lodge represents the largest source of work that the tourism sector provides to this community, achieving a 67%. Our Resident Manager and our Operation Manager are from Turrialba as well.

• Seven Cabecar natives – most of them heads of families living in the nearby Nairi Awari indigenous reserve – work at the Lodge. Those seven men have formed a Cultural Rescue Committee with other work-mates to strengthen Cabécar culture and its appreciation. They have drawn up an annual cultural calendar for celebrations with traditional events , and presentations on medicinal plants.

• Our company has launched an environmental education program for eight schools & six hundred chil-dren in the communities closest to the Lodge and Pacuare River. A group of river guides and Pacuare Lodge employees were trained to give presentations at the schools in the communities of Bajo del Tigre, Linda Vista, Santa Marta, Guayacán, El Coco, Betania, Moravia & Morazán.

• We have also coordinated donations from guests that have been used to buy computers and varied supplies for the school in Bajo del Tigre and the Cabecar Indigenous Village, the closest communities. The company also supports school and community events there and helps them maintain their road.

• We launched an essay contest at the school with the theme of “Origins of Bajo del Tigre.” Children have to research and write a story about the history of their village and area, interviewing grandparents and older neighbors. The author of the best essay won a mountain bike. The historic information that resulted from this essay is used by our guides during the “El Bajo del Tigre Horseback Tour”.

How can you help us?

• We encourage you to make the best use of water; it is a non renewable resource and we have to take good care of it. You can leave the towel sign on your bed if you don`t need to change it for a new one.

• Make the best use of candles and electricity when you can. Even though electricity is produced with a hydroelectric micro turbine, we need your help to make the best use of it.

• Use the classify trashes when you dispose most of your wastes. We have them all over the lodge.

• In your rooms, please use the paper bags for your disposals. We provide bags for paper, aluminum, plastic and organic disposals.

• Follow Pacuare Lodge philosophy and please don`t extract any plants, commercialize / keep species in captivity, or feed the animals.

• All the facilities and grounds at Pacuare Lodge including our suites, main lodge and deck are non-smoking.

• Join our Jaguar research program and donate a camera for the Pacuare Lodge private natural reserve.

• We greatly appreciate filling out our after trip survey at the end of our trip as it allow us to evaluate our sustainable programs and service.

• If you would like to visit any protected areas, please contact any of our staff and they will transfer you with one of our travel consultants.

Story of Bajos del Tigre

Bajos del Tigre is the closest town from Pacuare Lodge, and this is the story told by Jerlin Fuentes, a student from the Los Angeles School in Bajos del Tigre…

I would like to tell you the story of how the Bajos del Tigre community was born, and why it has this par-ticular name. My granddaddy told me that this place was a great mountain long time ago, and you could see a great variety of wildlife, including the tiger, and since we are right where the tiger passed, people started calling it “Bajos del Tigre” (The Tiger lowlands).

When my granddaddy was very young, his father brought him to Bajos del Tigre; on those days, they had to work very hard to build their farms and their houses, they had to cut the trees with axes and plant their own food. In 1960, locals began to build the first road to the community; and it was finished up to where there is now the school of Los Angeles. To build the first school in 1980, the local parents organized them-selves and they formed a Committee. This first school was built with great effort and it was very beautiful but small.

To bring electricity to our community, we had to fight hard, and until mid-1998, the first light poles where placed. I cannot describe how happy they were the first day that the street lamps lit, and the whole street was illuminated. With electricity, we also had some additional benefits, such as the telephone, the refrige-rators, TVs and other things that made the community’s life easier.

The road is not finished yet, and now the new generations of Bajos del Tigre, have to keep fighting every day for our community‘s progress, as it was done bravely by our grandparents before. Maybe someday in the future, I will be the one who has the opportunity to tell the story my granddaddy told me, to one of my descendants. I am sure that I will treasure this story in my mind and in my heart to keep alive the memories of my grandfather and the founders of this beautiful community.

The story does not end here; the inhabitants of the Bajo del Tigre will continue writing it day by day.

Nuestro compromiso con la sostenibilidad turística:

En Pacuare Lodge estamos comprometidos con el turismo sostenible lo cual significa contrarrestar el impacto negativo que produce nuestra operación mediante acciones concretas que bene-ficien la conservación y a las comunidades cercanas. Esta política no se limita únicamente al lodge sino que abarca toda la empresa, desde la oficina central hasta nuestro centro de operaciones donde almace-namos nuestras equipo y balsas.

A continuación detallamos algunas de las acciones que realizamos o que estamos en proceso de realizar para mejorar nuestra relación con el medio ambiente:

Los siguientes son algunos de los pasos que hemos adoptado, o estamos adoptando para mejorar nuestra relación con el medio ambiente:

• En agosto del 2010, Pacuare Lodge obtuvo el nivel 5 en la Certificación de Sostenibilidad Turística (CST). Este nivel es el más alto que otorga el Instituto Costarricense de Turismo. El CST es un programa que pretende la categorización y certificación de empresas turísticas de acuerdo con el grado en que su operación se aproxime a un modelo de sostenibilidad.

• El Pacuare Lodge fue construido con el mínimo impacto sobre el bosque circundante y el río. Ningún árbol fue cortado para la construcción de los bungalows e instalaciones. Para ello se utilizó, madera de proyectos de reforestación a cargo de pequeños agricultores. Los techos de paja fueron hechos al estilo tradicional Cabecar con hojas de palma recogidas de una manera sostenible.

• Con los años, hemos adquirido 340 hectáreas (836 acres) de bosque primario a lo largo del río Pacuare con fines de conservación y para compensar la huella de carbono producida por nuestros vehículos. Sólo en el 2008, invertimos medio millón de dólares en la compra de tierras para la conservación. Parte de ese bosque estaba en peligro de ser deforestado, pero ahora está estrictamente protegido.

• El Lodge y las habitaciones funcionan con electricidad limitada y la mayor parte de sus instalaciones se ilumina con linternas y velas. La poca electricidad que utilizamos en el Lodge proviene de una fuente de energía limpia generada por una micro turbina ubicada en un afluente cercano. Se instalaron dos microturbinas que utilizan 4.2 litros de agua por segundo las cuales se conectan a un transformador que envia la electricidad a un banco de baterias que almacena energia por 24 horas 7 dias a a la semana. Esta turbina suple la energia que utiliza el lodge para operar su equipo de comunicacion, la cocina, refrigera-ción y para iluminar los senderos entre otros. Este sistema de energia limpia de bajo impacto ambiental suplira la demanda de electricidad requerida por los proximos 20 anos, hacienda nuestra operacion aun mas sostenible.

• Pacuare Lodge produce gran parte de los vegetales, frutas, raíces y tubérculos que servimos en nuestro restaurante los cuales son cultivados en nuestra propia finca orgánica, Las Nubes de Tuis, ubicada en las montañas que rodean el río Pacuare. Hemos invertido en capacitar a los campesinos locales en métodos de cultivo orgánico para apoyar la producción. También producimos queso tipo Turrialba y queso de ca-bra en forma orgánica en nuestra finca en en Tuis de Turrialba que se adquirió para la producción de estos quesos y la producción de hortalizas orgánicas que se consumen en el lodge.

• Con la ayuda de nuestros clientes, estamos reforestando antiguos pastizales en la cuenca del río Pacuare con especies de árboles nativos para compensar nuestras emisiones de carbono y para mejorar la salud ambiental de la zona. A medida que los árboles crecen, absorben toneladas de carbono de la atmósfera mientras que proporcionan hábitat para una gran variedad de vida silvestre.

• Pacuare Lodge / Aventuras Naturales junto con el Programa de la Universidad Nacional de Manejo de Vida Silvestre, impulsamos desde el ano 2009 un estudio para determinar la población de jaguares que se encuentra dentro de la Zona Protegida del Pacuare. Lo invitamos a visitar nuestra Sala Jaguar ubicada en el segundo nivel de la recepcion para ver algunas de las imágenes captadas por las cámaras digitales colocadas en los senderos de la Reserva Privada del Pacuare Lodge y conocer acerca de este felino.

• El mono congo es una especie común en Costa Rica , sin embargo a raíz de la cacería este animal des-apareció del bosque alrededor del Pacuare Lodge hace ya varios años. Pacuare Lodge unió esfuerzos con un equipo de biólogos de la Universidad de Costa Rica para reintroducir esta especie en nuestra reserva privada. En el año 2008 se efectuó el primer rescate de una tropa de ocho monos de un pequeño parche de bosque ubicado a una hora del lodge que ofrecía condiciones muy precarias para la supervivencia de estos animales.

• Nuestro riguroso programa de reciclaje se extiende desde la oficina principal hasta el Lodge. Estamos comprometidos con las tres erres: reducir, reutilizar y reciclar. En el lodge, hacemos compost con residuos orgánicos y separamos los materiales reciclables para su transporte a empresas de reciclaje. Para los almuerzos que servimos en el tour del río Pacuare, usamos platos, vasos y cubiertos reutilizables, en lugar de los platos y vasos desechables que utilizan otras empresas de rafting.

• En el Lodge, la ropa de cama sucia se transporta por balsa hasta Siquirres, donde cuidamos el uso del agua y utilizamos solamente detergentes biodegradables.

• Los baños del Lodge están equipados con jabón y shampoo biodegradables. Las aguas residuales del Lodge van a tanques sépticos para evitar la contaminación del río cercano.

• Aventuras Naturales y Pacuare Lodge encabezaron el Programa de Bandera Azul Ecológica para el Río Pacuare, en conjunto con las comunidades locales y AyA de Costa Rica (Instituto de Acueductos y Alcan-tarillados). En marzo del 2009, el río Pacuare se convirtió en el primer río en Costa Rica en ser premiado con Bandera Azul Ecológica , haciendo de este un proyecto pionero.

“The Long Run “es una organización sin fines de lucro fundada en el 2009 por la Fundación Zeitz que promueve la sostenibilidad a nivel global por medio de empresas turísticas especializadas en viajes de naturaleza y cultura. Su razón de ser es apoyar y conectar a sus miembros con el fin de lograr los están-dares más altos de sostenibilidad por medio de un balance entre las 4C que comprende Conservación, Comunidad, Cultura y Comercio. Pacuare Lodge es miembro activo de The Long Run desde el año 2012 y practica los estandares del Global Ecosphere Retreats® (GER) que ha sido reconocida internacionalmente como una de los mejores estándares para áreas protegidas privadas (Dr. Jeff A. Responsabilidad Social

El Turismo sostenible debe mejorar la calidad de vida de las comunidades más inmediatas a nuestro Lodge y con esto en mente hemos desarrollado proyectos y donaciones concretas que beneficien dichas pobla-ciones. La infraestructura en esta zona remota es muy escasa y de bajo mantenimiento.

Los pobladores tienen muy pocas opciones de empleo y debido a ello estamos muy comprometidos con la generación de empleos para la comunidad local. Detallamos a continuación algunas de las acciones que hemos puesto en práctica:

• El 100% del personal de Pacuare Lodge proviene de las comunidades locales de Bajos del Tigre y la Reserva Indígena Nairi Awari ( esta cifra no incluye los 18 guía de río que viven en Turrialba a 34 kms del lodge. De acuerdo a un estudio demográfico podemos decir que el turismo representa el 18% de los em-pleos de la comunidad de Bajos del Tigre y Pacuare Lodge es el principal generador de empleos turistico de esta comunidad con un total del 67% de los empleos. •Siendo consecuentes con la filosofía de Pacuare Lodge de beneficiar a las comunidades aledañas moti-vamos la creación de microempresas que suplan de algunos servicios que son necesarios para la opera-ción del lodge. En dicho proceso nuestra empresa apoya estos emprendimientos mediante financiamien-to y capacitacion.

• Siete indígenas Cabécar – en su mayoría jefes de familias, que viven en la reserva indígena Nairi Awari trabajan en el Lodge. Estos colaboradores han formado un Comité de Rescate Cultural, con otros compa-ñeros de trabajo, para fortalecer la cultura Cabécar y su reconocimiento.

• Nuestra empresa ha puesto en marcha un programa de educación ambiental para más de 8 escuelas en las comunidades más cercanas al Lodge y el río Pacuare. Un grupo de guías de río y colaboradores del Pacuare Lodge fueron entrenados para dar presentaciones y charlas en las escuelas de la comunidad de Bajo del Tigre, Linda Vista, Santa Marta, Guayacán, El Coco, Betania, Moravia y Morazán.

• También hemos coordinado las donaciones de huéspedes para la compra de equipos y suministros diversos para la escuela de Bajo del Tigre, la comunidad más cercana. La compañía también apoya a la escuela y en el mantenimiento de caminos vecinales.

• Estamos comprometidos con la educación ambiental y con la divulgación de nuestras prácticas soste-nibles entre nuestros huéspedes, personal y la comunidad local.

• Compramos alimentos y comestibles a proveedores locales y apoyamos la agricultura orgánica.

• Organizamos un concurso de ensayos en la escuela con el tema “Orígenes de Bajo del Tigre.” Los niños tuvieron que investigar y escribir un relato sobre la historia de su pueblo y la zona, entrevistando a los abuelos y vecinos mayores. El autor del mejor ensayo ganó una bicicleta de montaña.

¿Cómo puedo ayudar?

• Lo motivamos a hacer el mejor uso del agua, es un recurso no renovable y debemos cuidarla. Puede dejar el rotulo de toalla encima de la cama si usted no desea cambiarla por una nueva.

• Por favor, haga el mejor uso de las candelas y la electricidad cuando sea posible. A pesar de que la electricidad es producida mediante una turbina de agua es necesario hacer el mejor uso de este recurso.

• Utilice los basureros de clasificacion de desechos para disponer de los residuos. Tenemos estos basure-ros en distintos puntos del lodge.

• En su habitacion tenemos bolsitas de papel para disponer de sus residuos las cuales estan rotuladas para papel, alumnio, plástico y orgánico.

• Por favor sea consecuente con la filosofía de Pacuare Lodge y no extraiga plantas, comercialice o man-tenga especies en cautiverio ni alimente animales del bosque.

• Todas nuestras facilidades, jardines incluyendo las suites, edificio principal, terrazas son de no fumado.

• Lo motivamos a unirse a nuestro programa de investigación Jaguar y done una camara para colocarla en la Reserva Privada de Pacuare Lodge.
