Peer Mentors Mission Statement

Peer Mentors provide a strong intellectual and social foundation for incoming students

that will enhance their personal and professional growth throughout their education.

Goals of Program

• Promote unity among class years• Encourage involvement in clubs and organizations• Provide a support network for entering students• Adjunct to academic advisors and faculty advisors• Mentoring and leadership opportunities for students

What You Can Gain as a Mentor

Mentoring Program Events

Mentors & Mentees• Ice cream social• Welcome Fest• Bingo and brownies• Trivia night• Bagels after the first exam• Pizza & wings night

Mentors Only• Training in mentoring skills• Training in academic

regulations and campus resources

• Career & Peer Mentoring Forum

What is Expected of Mentors

• Contact mentees before start of classes• Make mentees feel welcome and connected• Attendance at training session each semester• Keep in touch with assigned mentees throughout

semester• Fill out “Mentor Reports” every month• Attend at least 2 program events

Who We’re Looking For

• Desire to welcome new students• Interested in making a difference• Motivated to help others• Get along well with others• Knowledgeable about being successful • People from all different backgrounds, majors, and

experiences• Willing to make the commitment to the program

Program Update for 2011 - 2012

• ~ 40 Mentors• You will have at least 2 Mentees• Required attendance at some program events• More training and contact with Mentors

• Applications will be emailed to all participants tonight

• Applications will be competitive

• Applications will be reviewed blind by the Coordinators

• May have a wait list of Mentors
